OT: Billy Porter's financial woes are 'unacceptable'
Billy Porter says the financial hardships he's suffered as an actor are "unacceptable". The 54-year-old '80 for Brady' star was forced to sell his house during the 2023 actors strike when members of the SAG-AFTRA union walked out as part of a dispute with studios and streaming giants partly over pay issues - and Billy is adamant it's not fair for big name stars like the cast of 'Friends' to be making millions while actors lower down the ladder struggle to make ends meet. He told the Guardian newspaper: "Those 'Friends' people are making $100 million a year! I’m getting six-cent cheques! It’s not OK!" Billy went on to insist his pay from 2021 movie 'Cinderella' was only enough to cover his mortgage for four months. www.msn.com/en-sg/entertainment/celebrity/billy-porters-financial-woes-are-unacceptable/ar-BB1jWB58While I understand Billy's frustration, everyone will not make the huge salaries and it can't be forced. Your manager has to negotiate your worth and what you bring to the project and other's may or may not agree. Even with his album "Black Mona Lisa" released with a major label and had club, dance, disco and house music but didn't sell. He wore the ball gowns and was very flamboyant and said he wanted to appeal to the gay community tho he acknowledged that dance music was often dismissed. But it seems his community nor others were all that interested. They love their divas but most of those women were already stars because they had universal appeal. And the gay community came to idolize them too but they did not make them stars (Beyonce, Taylor, Ariana, Gaga, Madonna etc). But Billy has a successful career and is a different kind of star but it just may not be what he wants it to be. However, even gay music artists have to appeal to more than a niche audience if they want to be successful. And it is likely even harder to be at the top as an actor regardless of sexuality.

Not a fan of Billy per se, although he does seem to be very talented, and I have no idea if that's a direct quote or somebody misquoting him...but doesn't it seem like he complains a lot? I've seen a couple of interviews with him, and he complained about something in those too. I saw the Cinderella movie he was in, and he didn't really have a very big part at all. Maybe he needs a new manager?

lurleene, thanks for the info about Billy Porter. It says a lot about the struggles of those artists who are just outside the orbit of the big A-listers. Adam's solo music has been a struggle for him to promote and get heard, and that results in smaller, less frequent solo tours. He knows this, of course. When he is asked about a new solo tour, he skirts around it and says he will be making some appearances in the upcoming year. Adam is wise to diversify and get himself out there in different ways: judging, one-offs, that musical project, his animation work, etc. His own music doesn't get wide distribution, so he knows he has to find other ways to promote himself. One thing about Adam is that everyone in the business likes working with him. It's a huge asset to have. He is never a whiner.

One thing about Adam is that everyone in the business likes working with him. It's a huge asset to have. He is never a whiner. I agree Adam is not a whiner. He hasn't had major label support in a long time so it is unlikely his music is going to be widely heard now. Early in his career, he may not have been on the same page with his label (RCA wanted him to go more rock and less Pop/dance for his second album) so they did not push very hard even after his #1 on BB200 album. I think they would have been pleased and behind "Velvet" but that is something we will never know. HA. But Adam is aware of the type of music that brings him the most attention and accolades going back to Idol days, fronting Queen and covers of others. But it may not be his favorite type of music so he doesn't push them even when he has some gems on his albums that should have been pushed. Thankfully, he has so many other avenues and ways to make money (and he has made a lot with Queen and his solo tours, projects) that he gets to do the music he wants without the expectations that it will get him larger tours or win awards. He is such a great guy with a huge talent so it is hard for some of us fans not to want more for him. Tho we know he has such a great career and are happy for him that he gets to do it his way.
