ITA about Kris' new single. I watched some of the videos over at MJs and he has a different sound this time. I also think the PDs are going to add his song quicker. I just want Adam to get a far shot this time around with radio play. Kris and Adam aren't in competition with each other. They are entirely different artists and each has their own battles to wage in this industry. One doesn't have to fail for the other to succeed and as Adam fans we shouldn't even care what Kris does (unless you're a fan of his too). my opinion is that Adam's song is doing fine. It's making progress every day on radio so not much more we can ask for right now. eta: hello lurker out of lurkdom EXACTLY. I started to write essentially the same post but got tired halfway through...it's been what, nearly three years? Four years? The comparisons may never end in the permanent butthurt on both sides at places like MJ's, where I suspect they're still bitching at each other over the results of season two, but it's a new dawn, a new day, a new life, and I'm feeling good. I just made that last part up all by myself. :

I want a concert towel or at least some decent merchandise. Yes, I've already given to charity water, but I still wanna towel! ;D A towel would be nice, but if we don't get a Trespassing lunch box this era, heads are gonna roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:( Choose your own lunch box photo! www.lunchboxes.com/custom-lunch-box.html

Remember what Adam said about getting the collective eyeroll? This is still happening with him for a number of reasons. The main one is that he's gay, another important one is that the FYE era had a very flamboyant gay who pushed a lot of buttons with the AMA's, his GNT concerts, and his music in general with FYE and Fever in particular. People in my family give him the collective eyeroll all the time and will not listen to his music. I've gotten to where I just don't mention him at all even though they know I follow him intensely. They just don't want to hear about it and when they do it's eyeroll time again. I hate to say it, but I wish he had started the first era off like he is with this one. I think it would have gone over better and gained him more fans. As it is, he has a loyal fan base that stuck with him through everything in the first era, but I believe the fans he gained during FYE era were mostly overseas. I just don't see him selling much here in America and that may be why they are concentrating on the overseas market this time around. They know radio is still eyerolling him along with all the haters here in America and that it will take making him big overseas first to get him in the door over here. I do believe that Adam will make it big in other ways also, especially with Queen. I see that gig as being the way Adam gets his name out there around the world in a big way and hopefully here in America too. Sorry that I'm rambling but also want to say that I will be so pissed if radio plays the heck out of Kris's new music while shunning Adam. I may just burst a blood vessel over that one, if it happens. I am worried too that they are going to play the heck out of Kris's new single. I haven't heard the snippet or dance remix but people seem to be raving about it on MJs et al and Toby is a huge supporter of Kris so he'll probably play the heck out of it (unlike Adam's song). Not really related but I was on my local radio website, Alice, the one that play BTIKM first. Out of their listing of 10 most popular tracks in SF, 8 were all Lana Del Ray. No Adam to be found. I just don't get it. On a positive note, I have been trying to read the comments on the video, and I lots of "I love this song". So I am hoping that it just needs more exposure by radio play or the video. Why the heck isn't on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown? Toby is a prick! He is a NAL stan, always has been and always will be! He is a passive aggressive click whore. Mark my words, he will turn on Adam and his fans. WHY do people continue to tweet TK? WHY????? The real world =/= MJs. The NAL stans congregate there because they have nowhere else to go. There aren't that many of them. It took Kris well over a week to sell out a venue in LA that had a capacity limit of around 200. Of course there are tons of positive comments for VOL, the NAL stans make it their business to make sure that Kris gets positive reviews and comments at MJs.

Ok, this is my last post on the Kris subject.
I completely agree that both of them have their own battles to fight in the music industry, and their successes are not linked to each other. I also wish I could totally ignore him.
That being said, the competitive side in me cannot let this one go. Wish I could. I added a "scroll away" warning on my earlier post.
It's DEFINITELY not that I wish him to fail (I like him), I just don't think it would be *fair* (as in, in the greater scheme of things) for him to have greater success than Adam on US radio. And I expressed that opinion, since this is what we are doing here, after all, expressing opinions.
I am moving on from this subject now.

I just want the PDs to be better to Adam this time around.

GAH. LOOONG. SCROLLL! (most of it is quotes? sorta? maybe?) As to Adam getting the recognition and air play we all think he so richly deserves, I have come to the conclusion that Adam is not, and probably never will be, for everyone's taste. (Shaking my head in bewilderment). Why? ... 2. Adam does not and will not fit into a comfortable box. Not in his singing style, in his choice (or lack of choice) of genre, not in his presentation, not in his appearance, not in his persona. The only predictable things about Adam are that he will be unpredictable, and he will put on a hell of a performance. Some folks are uncomfortable without boxes or categories. Some folks are uncomfortable with someone who is so obviously unique and undefinable. Who is so not the boy next door (except when he is). 3. Dare I say it? Adam is too complex for some folks' taste. Complex and multi-layered vocally, musically, in terms of image, in terms of personality. One cannot "get" Adam with just a casual listen or look. It takes time and focus to see all his dimensions. We fans have taken the time.... lots of it. But, some folks just like to dance and boogy, or put on some homogenous, generic music as background to their daily lives. Adam ain't background. 4. Yes, there is the whole "gay, gay, gay" thing. But, I am not convinced that is as big a factor as some think it is. Still, that may always be an aspect. It is what it is. ... 2. We are talking about Pop music, where Gaga and Nikki Minaj are stars. Pop music wants people who fit outside the box. BEPs, Katy Perry, Madonna (for years), Cee Lo, MJ, PINK, and Prince are pop artists who have in the past or are now pushing boundaries. Being unpredictable is the best thing you can be in Pop music! 3. Adam is a pop artist. He is singing pop songs. There really isn't anything that complex about that. The songs and his music are in line with what others are doing on different scales in the world of Pop. If Adam releases a good pop song, people will like it. 4. We will never know the extent that this has on certain outcomes, but in this country this is his biggest obstacle. IMO, his biggest problem isn't that he is some "rare, intricate, complex and fascinating bird"! Are you kidding? THAT is what Pop legends are made of! This isn't Country music- Adam should fit in with other Pop stars! Have you been watching the Pop world for the past 30 or so years? The crazier, the better! People don't want boring, they want something different- that gets their attention! Hey--Love all your perspectives and I think it is a good conversation to have. I just wanted to jump in and say, tigerlily, that I completely agree with your analysis here and appreciate that you put it forward so directly and clearly. It's funny what a difference one's perspective makes. I hear everything people are saying about Adam's being too outside the box for pop radio, and too edgy, I hear about how much his sexuality is a hurdle he has to overcome, and I read, for example, what Jo just wrote above about Adam's getting the collective eye-roll for being too flamboyant in the FYE era...and I have to believe that's all true because I hear it again and again in the fandom, and also because I'm sadly wise enough never to underestimate the force of homophobia in this or for that matter most countries. But in my world, where Adam also ( >:() receives eye-rolls, he's facing the opposite problem, from an equally (well, maybe not equally but similarly) ignorant position. The people I know don't think Adam is too out there--they think he is too mainstream. They think he is a commercial product (thank you, AI) who sings manufactured, boring, simplistic pop. His sexuality, to the extent that people in my circle think of it at all, is if anything thought of as a redeeming feature--something that makes him slightly more interesting. And they are barely aware of his FYE-era camp and flamboyance (more on that in a minute). It's funny and ridiculous, actually, when you think about it, because within the world of AI, these people (those who watched, which is a minority) would have rooted for Adam as being a supreme talent with a kind of fuck-this-world iconoclasm. But outside of AI, he's still stamped with the AI label. I've tried to figure out why this is (setting aside the people who simply don't like mainstream pop music from anyone) and what I keep coming back to, in addition to the AI stigma, is very relevant to our discussion today: the singles. None of Adam's three big singles to date (I'm skipping FYE because it was on the scene so briefly) has been (IN MY OPINION) particularly groundbreaking or exciting pop. I agree, there is a lot of dross on the radio, but for me there are also a lot of pop songs that get a lot of play that are significantly more exciting and certainly edgier that WWFM, IIHY, and BTIKM. And I'm not talking exclusively about faster, dancier music--both of Adele's big singles struck me as more interesting, as songs, than Adam's singles. PLEASE NOTE: 1) I am not dissing Adam here. I am a huge fan and I happen to think his singles barely represent who he is as a pop artist for me. He didn't even write any of these singles, and without fail, the greater a hand Adam has in the music he produces, the more I like the outcome. (Have I mentioned I'm FUCKING excited for TRESPASSING?!) 2) This is, needless to say, entirely my own opinion, which comes shaded with all sorts of personal biases and prejudices, and should in no way diminish the pleasure anyone else takes in these songs. BUT: IMO one of the reasons (and I acknowledge there are powerful additional reasons) that Adam has had a difficult time on the radio is that he hasn't released a TRULY GREAT POP SINGLE yet. And when I think of what my friends and family, say, who don't follow Adam closely at all, have been exposed to--his singles on the radio and on late-night talk show performances and other performances like AI--then I understand much better the ways in which they dismiss him. They would have loved the "flamboyance" of GNT so much more, if they had seen it. They would have loved Fever, and Broken Open, and DTRH, also Music Again. They may recognize, from the singles, that the guy has a great voice, but they don't care, they're bored by the music, and frankly I might be too if that were all I knew. "The Heart Must Go On" is possibly my most hated song of the last two decades, and as a vocal performance it is impeccable. (Again, just a matter of taste, YMMV.) SO yes. I was disappointed by BTIKM (even though it sounds beautiful and I flove the video). I was disappointed with the claude kelly demo that leaked months ago, and I was disappointed with the slicker production of the single. It did sound a little song-factory to me. To be clear, I thought it had potential for radio success, and I still do, but I was disappointed, and I certainly didn't think it was the single to make people sit up and take notice of the new Adam Era. It is reminiscient of WWFM, and WWFM had significant success, but I have already heard enough of and about this new album to confidently expect something far more exciting, far greater than that, from it. So I'm not worried. I'm not worried at all. BTIKM may still take off (as people have pointed out, there are far worse songs ruling the airwaves, and radio promo is just kicking in next week). But speaking only for myself, I'm more excited for the NEXT single, and for the Album, and I share msn.uk's conviction that this is the beginning of a brave and massively successful new world for Adam. One last thing, and again, YMMV. I don't follow Kris, and hadn't known that his single was out until now, so I obviously haven't heard it. But now I'm curious and will definitely go seek it out, and I hope I like it. He seems like a nice guy, and as far as I'm concerned, more good music is better than more bad music. And he definitely doesn't represent a threat to Adam in any way. I wish him luck.

BTW, in case anyone might be wondering why the NAL thread at emjays is getting so many positive comments, it is because a large group of Adam fans are boycotting the site. (I am free!! Free!!) ;D

I want Adam to get a "fair" shot too but I think it's important to realize that the music industry isn't about being "fair". the most talented people aren't always the most successful people and sometimes success is found in places outside of the mainstream. Adam has a bigger hill to climb but he's climbing it and IMO Kris getting on the radio in no way knocks Adam back down the hill. They aren't adding Kris over Adam (if they even add Kris). It's not an either or situation as far as I can tell. Hee... thanks! love those lip freckles! His radio play so far has been good, not great but decent enough for not having done any U.S. promo to speak of. The song got 13 radio adds this past week, that's good and he can build from there. I think I'm more of a glass half full person.
