The open air festivals have bands play about 30-50 mins during the day, then give a good half an hour or a bit more to change everything on stage for the next band. During that time there is another stage where another band performs starting at about the time the first mentioned is about to finish. Big festivals have more than two stages and the schedule is not that rigid.
The biggest names perform last in order of notoriety and have possibility to play longer sets. Usually they (what I have heard) play maybe 1h 15mins - 1h 30mins, seldom more. That's because big names have a lot more equipment on stage which need to be changed and there might be silent period if the schedule is not followed, and the audience might get bored, as the smaller stages finish earlier for people to see the main act.
I remember that the festival I worked with in the 90's was in trouble, well in a good way, when the second to last performer was doing a 2 hour set. I don't know why, maybe they just got excited, it was not planned and maybe there was some delay during the day on top of that, cannot remember exactly. There was still the main act to come and organisers were panicking, how could they get the band out of there. The reason for the panic was that often the outdoor concerts have regulations: no loud noise after 11 pm if the site is anywhere close to inhabitation - often negotiated with the authorities to midnight or so, and always the last act extended to overtime even when in schedule. Apart from the noise there is also transport to consider, how can people get out of the festival area, and also out from the location. (Oh, wish I could remember what band it was...)
Every festival has their own schedules, so maybe someone who has attended Knebworth might have more insight in this particular case.
ETA Have to add that of course it depends on band's wishes too, but normally a festival gig is shorter than a separate concert would be. Thinking of these gentleman I think the set would be like 45 mins and two encores to finish it off making it like an hour or so.

I would say yes to the original question. www.knebworthhouse.com/rock/rockconcerts.htmthey say 50k at the last two sonisphere shows. so not too crammed, lol. but if queen performs i think the numbers will be higher. after all it is 2012... go hard if this is where sonisphere occurs, which for some reason i think is the case. Well if you look at the wiki page for this festival..it's all metal bands so I don't see where QUEEN would fit in with the likes of Metallica, Anthanx, Slayer etc...? Also, it seems to be a 6 day multiple country event isn't? So I have been trying to catch up... Head is spinning from trying to keep everything straight and not succeeding...lol Got bad news about my PC *sob* it's officially dead.. now I have to figure out a way to get a new one..*sigh* It has been frustrating using only my iPad since "flash" isn't supported so there are many vids that I am not able to see because of it...until I find them uploaded somewhere else ...but it has been a chore...and does make it harder to keep up First, I need to thank you for uploading these vids so that we challenged peeps are kept in the loop..lol BUT, I do have a comment to make about the B104 m&g......ackkk WHO thought it was perfectly ok to wax poetic to Adam about his "lip snarls". Really??? So much SHE ....why not just lay down and hump the floor in front of him...FFS If you are willing to wait for a computer and do not have a specific model in mind woot.com (a website with one item a day sale) often offers a new or refurbished desktop or laptop for sale at a great price and with 5 dollar S&H fee.

talking about the queen set, the length of the set, number of songs, etc made me really contemplate what adam is about to embark on. Can you imagine? Making sure he knows the songs that might be played. would there be any restriction from that angle? At least we know he is very familiar with the music and sang several of the songs already. He is a natural, a quick study, but what a task! All for just one performance? in the middle of promoting his own stuff. wow.
and it seems like later than sooner that we will see him on tour, which really bums me out.

My wish is for Adam to get to sing one or two of his own songs with Queen. At least one - hopefully the next #1 hit single.

The singer, whose new album Trespassing was originally set to drop on March 20, has told Clevver music that he will have to postpone the album's debut until "Maypril." "There's some new songs we're doing last minute that are really good," he said. "It's all for the best." It's a tantalizing bit of information—which we got via Gay.net—but at least we have this to pique our interest in the meantime: the album will feature a duet with singer Bruno Mars. Speaking of self promotion.. anyone hear anything about Yellowcard? No, and I don't think anyone was more shocked about loss of sales from one album to the next as Yellowcard was. Adam's band has always been very fluid. It's not like he started out "being a band". IMO his musicians will probably all have gigs on the side at one point or another. Once they commit to a tour, it's a great resume item but once the tour is over, they have to go out and self promote to continue working. LP was on hiatus from Yellowcard when he took the GN gig. Adam's tour kept growing and his commitments to Yellowcard came to fruition. Seems to me that is what is happening to Cam at the moment. Adam's not on tour, she is. I get a feeling that Kevin has his hand in many pots too. It seems it will boil down to who is available and for how long when tour plans are actually hard coded. I loved the GN tour band in all it's forms. I like the make up of the Trespassing era band at the moment but don't feel like it's in its final form. It will be fun watching the transitions. Does anyone know if Tommy sings?
