He doesn’t know Queen‘s back catalogue that well and in that last radio game, when he had to recognize Queen songs by single instruments, he didn’t even recognize BoRhap, the guitar solo of We Will Rock You or the drums and synth from Radio GaGa. . [/quote] where I can’t watch it?

Speaking for myself, I was not embarrassed by that radio game. I doubt anyone out there thought Adam doesn't know BoRap, Radio Gaga or WWRY no matter what happened. I'm sure he knew them even before he joined Queen and sang them for 10 years. And we have heard Adam say in many other interviews that he had listened to Freddie and Queen music and was intrigued by Freddie. Even his mother said that. And he has listed his musical influences as Bowie, Freddie, Robert Plant as well and Madonna and Michael Jackson. And he auditioned for Idol with BoRap and fought to get to sing Whole Lotta Love on rock week (which brought him to the attention of Brian and Roger). He even sang Satisfaction one week because he said the Rolling Stones were his mother's favorite band and his family would listen to those albums around the pool at home. And we know Eber wasn't playing dance music, lol. Maybe he is trying to impress or accommodate his new found friends and associates, who maybe care more about dancing and partying in the clubs to Gaga, Beyonce and Taylor, lol. But it feels a little weird and not sure what is going on. But not liking his new team, influences and the direction at all. And I can't see this direction being a big success for him outside of drag clubs and bars but maybe it will satisfy that itch and he will move on. HA.

You’re right, that Adam does know the songs, but I was really shocked, when Adam didn’t recognize the songs in that game. I knew them immediately and Adam has song every single one hundreds of times. I still don’t know, how that could have happened. And yes, Adam did fall in love with Queen (or rather Freddie and his stage persona) in his early twenties. He did watch the concerts available at the time (not many) and he himself just mentioned in that interview today that he had listened to their Greatest Hits album first. But by now and after many years in the Queen fandom, I feel like Adam is mostly a fan of Freddie as a person and not that much of the band Queen. Adam had mentioned Freddie as one of his idols on his MySpace page before he went on Idol. And as a singer himself, Adam loves to sing these fantastic songs. They’re a challenge even for him and his instrument. In the end it doesn’t matter, that Adam doesn’t know all their songs and history (even though as a Queen fan it’s sometimes hard to listen to him telling a story about Freddie, that was told in the movie, but which didn’t happen in reality.) Long story short: From my understanding Adam had been into classic rock during his twenties, but he seems to favor pop and dance music, that he has also listened to as a kid ne teenager. As Queen‘s current frontman he of course tells and emphasizes the stories from his twenties.

I am feeling sentimental and even a bit sad to see footage of Brian May talk so highly and proudly of Adam. That was 5 years ago!! ("May's revelations come in an interview with Sammy Hagar conducted in late 2019 and uploaded to the YouTube channel of AXS TV this week"). I have been to QAL concerts more often than I can easily count on two hands and I can't believe that it was less than one year ago since I last saw them twice in San Francisco last fall. It was phenomenal - Adam looked good, he sounded great, and he owned his role as their seasoned frontman with charm, confidence, and gratitude. Both nights were absolutely fantastic and in a way I did feel "validated" as a fan to see him yet again so successful on such a big stage. Only a few months later my heart literally dropped when Adam expressed in interviews preluding to "Afters" that he doesn't listen to classic rock and that pretty much everything up to this newest chapter was performative and not authentic. It didn't feel right, though I do understand that with Queen he sings someone else's music and that with his own work he is constantly evolving and the latest may always be the "most authentic". But why make such an insensitive statement, especially not too long after another highly successful tour with QAL? The way this direction change came about felt harsh and even slightly unappreciative to me. I immediately thought how Brian and Roger may react in addition to myself feeling a bit let down after all the support up to then. Loved him with Queen but I still preferred his solo chapters and the countless solo concerts I attended. I too am feeling a level of defiance in Adam lately, similar to that AMAs performance back then, and I hope that he won't forget the many opportunities he has enjoyed in his career, besides feeling stifled in his artistic vision at times. I am not in his shoes (literally and thankfully so lol) but I tend to reflect a bit and make comparisons with other gay men in different professions and jobs, who have to make adjustments in their "gayness" based on professional and social settings while still out to everybody. I was surprised about Adam‘s words in that interview as well, and felt kind of let down. But after all these years I decided to mostly ignore that, simply because it doesn’t fit with what he has always said in the past and what I experienced at these concerts. And after all, it’s simply true, that Adam doesn’t listen to classic rock. He doesn’t know Queen‘s back catalogue that well and in that last radio game, when he had to recognize Queen songs by single instruments, he didn’t even recognize BoRhap, the guitar solo of We Will Rock You or the drums and synth from Radio GaGa. I think we fans, who saw it, felt so embarrassed, that nobody dared to talk about it. 🤪 As for the interview you mentioned: Was it a written interview or a video? I don’t remember. If it was written down, his words could also be slightly out of context or shortened. But in the end, it’s simply the truth. If Adam really liked classic rock music he would have made and make a different kind of music. And he would attend rock concerts, something I‘ve never seen or heard of. AND he and Brian or Roger might really (have) work(ed) on music together, in whatever form. But as it is, Adam solo has different musical interests than Brian and/or Roger. Here is one of the interviews that I found and could remember. It's a Billboard article. I believe that there is another one but I can't remember. www.billboard.com/culture/pride/adam-lambert-afters-ep-lgbtq-music-1235689009/I agree that it has been pretty obvious that rock music is not Adam's passion or even a strong interest, and he sure doesn't need to pretend otherwise. However, there must have been a more diplomatic way to express his musical interests and passions. Still, he does perform the Queen catalogue convincingly well to a point that you think the music is engrained in him. When I read through the above interview I was a bit surprised that his front man status felt more like playing a character. I must have missed that radio game where he didn't recognize Queen songs, but I would have probably shrugged it off haha. After all, it is not his own music and he is not a musician but a singer.

sizzling63Thank you for the link. I had read that interview before and I had probably stumbled upon the exact same sentences as you. Now I checked it closely and I noticed, that the paragraph in the beginning is the one, that puzzled me and kind of made me sad. But that’s not a quote. It’s the introduction from the author and apparently his interpretation of what Adam has said. When I then read what Adam has really said, further down, then it all appears in a different light and fits with what Adam has said in the past.

I am not understanding why everyone is all over Adam. Is this all because some people aren't thrilled with this latest EP? This is the music he wanted to do for now, so this is what he will do. If we don't like it, we don't need to listen. I also did not get Adam saying he was only performing and not authentic when with Queen in the interview. I guess I read it with a different interpretation and agree with NightOwl that it was not Adam's words. QAL was in Japan in the beginning of the year. Maybe Roger and Brian have other things to do. I am happy to not make a problem where there is none. I enjoy Adam, I enjoy his personna, he is very nice to look at, he has a magnificient voice, is multi-talented, if there is something I don't like, I skip it, and move on to the next.
