Indie artists would use their own money if they want to put something out there. Without label support, who else would put up the money? Maybe they could have a sponsor?
I saw an eye-opening run on Rihanna. I had seen a documentary where a label put up several million to launch Maraih with a full court press and it worked. With Rihanna that was not the case. Jay Z was a new music executive who signed her but even after a #1 hit song, the label did not put up enough money to really move her forward. Her management team put up the money and invested in videos and promotions to keep her afloat and on the radar. It was only after she took off that her label saw what they had and really started to invest in her. She was just a 17 year old kid who had moved to the US for a music career. She was lucky that she had people who took over, protected her and knew what and how to do it. Now she is a billionaire, outside of music, and calling her own shots. And she can make music when and if she wants to. Amazing, lol.

I remember the early 90’s when she came out with that book she called SEX! Now that was even more shocking than this EP…the girl had cajones for sure My husband always says since she wasn't a great singer, she used the shock value to get attention...he thinks the same about Gaga...he's not a fan of either, but at least Gaga can play the piano. I do think it's good, however, that there are people out there who are willing and have the "cajones" to shake things up from time to time. We need those people. I am NOT one of those people lol. No offence, Gaga can sing circles around Madonna! Her Pop Musica isnt my thing either but the Soundtrack to "born a Star" is great! Imho I'm Not the one to directly shake Things Up either...i do it my way... i've been pushed/nudged to be more girly...Well, i'm Just Not a girly girl, i have a burly Side. Regarding pride month: i'm deep in the Bavarian woods to hike and saw a pride foag today. We really have Made some progress

My husband always says since she wasn't a great singer, she used the shock value to get attention... I agree with your husband on Madonna, lol. Now at over 60 she is still out there trying to shock, as an aging pop star, cause the talent is just not there. Stop with the dancers and shock and you got nothing. Adam stans and is influenced by a lot of less than talented artists and I don't get it. HA.

First, how much money does an artist make from iTunes sales? Is Adam making good money from Afters and the individual songs? I don't understand any of it.
Second, artists often reinvent themselves when they want career longevity. Adam is doing just that. Makes his career more interesting and it's good for the fans, too. Keeps the interest up. Adam has become known not just as a singer but also as a really good media personality. Smart, well-spoken, witty, thoughtful. It all pays off over time even if the music itself is no longer the main thing. I would love for Adam to have a media-present career for his entire life, radio play or no radio play.

I'm originally from Bavaria, love that part of the country and this makes me so happy. Progress indeed. Makes me miss my birth country.

I think it's super smart of him to keep expanding his resume...he actually has a lot to show for the last 15 years IMO. He's been a busy, busy man.

I understand that Adam loves dance and pop music and does not want to do an album of rock music. And of course he can do whatever he wants and what makes him happy. But not getting why he says that those who want to hear some rock from him are living in the past and wanting Classic Rock. Tho we love QAL, if you make rock music today, it is not Classic Rock. Lana Del Rey, Demi, Miley, Lord and Billie all have scored #1 rock and #1 Alt albums. They are much younger and more successful pop artists than Adam, as most pop divas are (Lana is the oldest at 39). And no one thinks they put out Classic Rock albums or old people music, when they added something outside of pop to their music path, lol. And other rock stars like Brandi Carlile (43) and Brittany Howard have won Grammy's in rock and Alt and they are not putting out Classic Rock either or music for old women. And of course, there are a number of successful male rock and Alt artists today. TBH, the only Classic Rock act that I am a huge fan of is QAL and that is 99% because of Adam, his vocals and his showmanship. HA.
And good for Adam that he has so many other opportunities and successes in his career.

I am probably way over thinking this, but: In a recent interview Adam acknowledged that the new EP was not for his long time "older women" fans. It was something he did for himself. So, I don't think he is expecting "us" to necessarily buy it or love it. Do you think that the timing of the release followed shortly by the announcement of Adam soon appearing for the first time in a Broadway musical is intentional? That he figures the EP is for that part of himself and the musical is something that will please his more traditional (older women) fans who like the Broadway side of him? I think Adam himself has answered the question about if he expects the older fans to like this new EP in the papermag interview that was posted here yesterday: Q: You talked about that catch 22, and I always associate your fans with being old ladies. Like, you have a lot of old lady fans. Adam: They’re old ladies! They are. I mean, I think it's the Idol audience. They got excited that there was somebody repping for that era. I did a lot from the '70s and '80s when I was on the show, and I think they were excited because it reminded them probably when they were younger. And so I captured that imagination and nostalgia for them, I think. Then you add the Queen experience to that, and it's like, I have connected with an older audience. I definitely have, and they've been so supportive and so sweet and coming to shows for the last 15 years and wearing merch. I definitely think for some of them, this [new music] isn't quite their lane or their cup of tea. I'm hopeful that because they've been so loyal thus far, that they'll understand that this is really a project that's for me. Like, this is for me. It's my truth, it's my sound, it's my lifestyle, if you will. And I feel like I've been around long enough and I've worked hard enough where I have every right to write about that. Do you know what I mean? I think the "reinvention" word is really cool. As a creative person, doing the same thing over and over again gets really boring. I wanted to try something different. I am moved that Adam is counting on his long term fans to stay with him even if this EP is not their cup of tea. I think that our conversation here about the EP is honest but IMHO I also think it is good in more public forums not to appear horrified. He clearly is counting on our loyalty and also our understanding of how painful it was to compromise as much as he felt he had to on who he was. Clearly he was among the bravest by asserting he was gay from the get go with and going with his vision for the cover of the first album. It all came at a price. That he can now say "I am doing this for me, it's my truth, my sound etc." and still be cognizant of how that might go over with what he clearly states are his loyal older women fans who helped make him successful and hope they are still with him is poignant and compelling. I love Adam for two major reasons - his voice and that he is a good good person. I doubt the likely Cabaret role was to please his older fans. A plum role like this is a pinnacle of his career. Yes, QAL is a pinnacle but in a different way because he was a theater boy from the start who was doubtful he could make it on Broadway. I think in many ways, should it happen, he would consider this to be one of the greatest triumphs of his professional career. I sure as hell hope it does happen as I already bought tickets for incredible table seats right at the stage which BTW are less money than VIP tickets at QAL. My kid saw the show and the cast mingles with the audience in those rows and that is keeping me up nights. I figure it is such a popular show I can sell me tickets if this is just a rumor. If you are interested, those seats are still available but be sure to go through SeatGeek.
