I've been fascinated watching Adam this round of promo. He prepared us months ago that this era was about #Realness, and he reiterates this point in almost every interview. Fans will be allowed to trespass into his head, he's showing us what's inside, etc. What is interesting is that at least thus far we really haven't actually learned anything truly new about him. He has a dark side? This is no news to stans who have followed him since day one. He loves and is inspired by his boyfriend? We've figured that since "rakastan." He has good days and bad days? Nothing new to see here.

You can't be a pop star and be a recluse. Part of celebrity is being in the public eye. Like it or not, people do want the "fucking paparazzi pictures at the end of the day". We want to see our favs coming out of the grocery store and going to the movies and walking down the street with stains on their shirts. It reassures us that celebs are like us—not always perfect, doing real stuff. We like to think we "know" celebs. This is the tabloid and reality show generation, where people document their lives in real time on Facebook and Twitter and oversharing is not only acceptable but expected. People want to see the blemishes on their idols so that they feel less imperfect themselves. They want to rubberneck when someone's on a downward spiral so they can tsk-tsk and not feel so bad about their own lives.

In this context, I'm intrigued by what Adam is trying to do—promoting the idea of realness and being candid about himself while at the same time trying to keep his real self intact and safe from prying eyes. When Adam recently said that his proudest moment was something that was personal and that he was keeping it to himself, I cheered quietly. We can speculate all day long about what that moment was, but we actually have no ~right~ to know, and he has no obligation to share. He gives us so much—time and energy and creativity—is it ever enough? Would we bleed him dry if he let us?

Part of what makes me happy about Adam being with Sauli (besides the fact that he deserves every happiness) is that he can go home at the end of the day and be truly real, truly himself, with someone who loves him for who he is. I can't even imagine what it must be like to have your life subject to endless speculation from fans and haters alike, with every sentence analyzed and every move second-guessed. If you can never let your guard down, you risk losing your person into your persona. What is real and what is presentation becomes blurred, and that's a road that leads to nothing good.

I get truly squicked out when people invade Adam's privacy and expose information that he intended to share only with his own circle. I wish that he could only share what he feels comfortable with, and was able to keep private what he wishes. Adam is still struggling with finding his way in the celebrity game. The public face, the private life. What to disclose and what to hide. At the end of the day, I'm content with what Adam chooses to share. We joke about being ninjas, but I hope Adam is always able to keep a part of himself away from prying eyes. Greater than the desire to know everything is the wish for his health and happiness.

So Adam, go ahead and give us #Realness. Share with us what you will. Tell us your favorite ice cream flavor and brand of underwear. But save your heart and your soul to share with those who truly know and cherish you.
