Just curious, there seems to be some folks on this site that have some theatre knowledge. I am wondering what do the actors do between shows when they work both the matinee and the evening. I am guessing the ensenbles don't have understudies, so they would be singing at all shows. The stars do a lot of singing. It doesn't seem they have enough time to rest, eat or rest their voices. Just wondering how they accomplish all this.

Katy Perry gave up her lucrative gig on Idol to put out new music. Her album is getting terrible reviews. I like Katy but I don't understand why with such a high profile and so much money made, you are returning to try to compete with the young pop divas. EDM, electro-pop and a dance album. One review said "In an effort to create a "dance party" album, Perry returned to producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke." She also has some rappers and Kim Petras as guests on the album. And the reviewers are comparing her to young 20 something pop stars and saying she sounds dated and does not measure up. In other words, no growth. Seems like she is following in the footsteps of Madonna, Janet and Jlo. They never knew how to move on or understand they are no longer young pop stars but kept hanging on anyway. I guess when you have limited talent, your choices are few but pop has a shelf life so you need to evolve. Katy is still on a major label so I'm sure they would have allowed her to put out some more mature music, with some meaning, if she wanted that. At her level, why not take a chance and do something different other than being a pop diva where the youngsters rule? But like Adam, she has other options outside of Grammy's, record sales and radio play so she should be fine.

Just wondering how they accomplish all this. I can give you some idea. I worked as a stage manager on and off Broadway and on a few musicals. Professional actors/singers work on their voice all the time not just when they’re in a show. They also work many rehearsal hours with the musical director on just the songs. He is the most important person on the creative team next to the director. Breaks between a matinee and evening show usually means resting in the dressing room maybe drinking special things to soothe the throat. Most actors in my experience do not like to eat much if at all between shows. I think they think it brings down their energy. This is generally what I’ve seen but all actors have their own special rituals. |
