The singer made his Broadway debut as the Emcee in the hit production of the musical. On September 26, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club welcomed some new nightcrawlers to its retinue. The hit Broadway show refreshed several of its leading roles, ushering in Adam Lambert as the Emcee, Auli’I Cravalho as Sally Bowles, and Calvin Leon Smith as Cliff.
It’s perhaps no surprise that Lambert, a Grammy-nominated artist who’s done time as the frontman for Queen, slips into the role marvelously. His Emcee is both sinister and sympathetic, wicked enough to fully enjoy the bacchanal of pre-war Germany but with the smarts to sell out just in time to save his own hide.

“I've been missing theater,” Lambert tells T&C the day after his opening-night performance and gala. “I've had a few offers over the years, and it never was quite the right timing or the right project. I saw Cabaret in London with Eddie [Redmayne as the Emcee] when he opened the show and was just blown away. I found out I had some people in common with those who made it, so we started having conversations about maybe one day doing it. The stars aligned.”
When it came to opening night, however, Lambert—who also recently released AFTERS, an EP of new music—didn’t leave anything to chance. “I got a massage before the show to loosen up the neck and the back and all that,” he says, “and then it was just caffeinate, caffeinate, caffeinate. The Emncee has got a bit of a manic, obnoxious hyperactivity about him, so I was like, OK, let’s get some Celsius going.”
At the Cabaret opening-night afterparty, Lambert wore an Edward Sexton suit, a Dolce & Gabbana shirt, a Gucci brooch, and Rick Owens shoes. The Emcee would surely approve.
