Adam had no break whatsoever at the end of SMGO in Belfast. Everything in those notes was put there with craft and emotion and precision. Adam knew exactly what to do, even in a moment of such adrenaline-fed excitement. Nothing, vocally, was missed or adapted. Adam was in control of his instrument. I do remember noticing how he corrected his vocal placement, in a nano-moment, at the end of 'Mad World'; the first performance; on Idol. I'm intrigued by the way many vocal critics and experts refer to Adam's vibrato. Vibrato is a natural, authentic pulsation . . . much like your heartbeat . . . when a voice is coming from the right place. An exquisite, bell-like, clear voice - will live, and only age as a body ages, when used correctly. Which means that a voice coming from the 'right place' is effortless! I know that seems hard to believe. But it's really true. Breath support isn't effortless; singing on key, to some, isn't effortless. Placing the voice 'in your head' requires letting go, and really being courageous enough to let the voice climb into its place. Vibrato is the underlying foundation of vocal expression; and flows effortlessly in a way that is unique to each vocal instrument. Unlike our hearts, it doesn't really speed up if you're excited. Instead, maybe 'the ring' - an sort of extension 'down-to-up' or 'deep-to-light' may be slightly more pronounced when nervous or excited; but vibrato is vibrato; and a trained voice never manufactures it. It is just there. Like the beating of your heart. Vocalists often 'sing through' vibrato, which is easy to do when forcing exhalation during the singing or sustaining of notes. Straight tone can enhance mood or feeling; or certainly be more effective in certain genres of music. There are vocalists who always 'sing at the throat' and force those powerful straight tones; without any vibrato, because they never cultivate their instrument, or let their instrument - their vocal cords - just relax and be; and let a natural tone find its place. They manufacture the tone. This technique forces, pushes and strains. You can hear it in the notes. It may sound like emotion; it may convey real emotion, but it leads to the same problems each of us suffer when we use any muscle group, or any repetitive motion, too often or in the wrong way. I just know Adam understands his vocal instrument so well. He has always looked at his ability to sing as an abstract of himself. His is an instrument he wants to explore, perfect, strengthen and experiment with - - - but he will not abuse it, nor hurt it, as a process in his learning. I have studied voice for many years; and this man, half my age, is a vocal genius. That's a great explanation. With instruments, we have to train muscles to do the motion, but with singing, vibrato comes with relaxation. I remember as a chorister in high school working at relaxing and the vibrato finally developed. I sing like crap now, however.

The discussion of vibrato is interesting to me, mainly because I am a singer (trained with many years of lessons and experience). Vibrato is indeed a natural part of a singing voice--I think of some folk singers who have a really strong vibrato and Jessie J has one that can get out of control sometimes as well. Adam controls his voice exceptionally well (I've always been a little envious of this--the man really worked on his voice for years, and you can tell).
What I think is kind of funny is that I have been listening to Freddie singing this evening (in the documentary and on recording--lifelong Queen fan) and he used a vibrato most of the time. People may not notice it as well because he didn't sustain his notes that often -- and sustained notes are when a vibrato really shows. When Freddie sang out at concerts, he pushed his voice, which also decreased his vibrato (as someone noted above--he sang through his vibrato). I read some of the comments people were making about Freddie's voice and his vibrato and believe those comments make as much sense as saying that Adam is too flamboyant to sing Freddie's songs--huh? Adam and Freddie both sing with vibrato, but since they sing differently of course the vibrato sounds different--but it's there nonetheless.
I love them both and watching the documentary made me sad that Freddie died so young, but happy that we had his presence in this world for as long as we did.

Looks like by the time I got a chance to chime in about vibrato everyone has covered it quite well. And, yes, Freddie often used vibrato on his sustained notes. His vibrato is very narrow with rapid occillations --- it sometimes sounds almost quivering. As I wrote on the masterclass thread, I think in TSMGO Adam used a more rapid and narrow vibrato than we are accustomed to hear from him -- probably not to imitate Freddie but as a nod to his sound.
Most singers use vibrato on sustained notes. Without it, the note can sound flat in texture or piercing, without any warmth. Depending on how much training they have, they may be able to vary the speed of the vibrato and the amount of oscillation, or sing a totally straight tone. In the live performance of Feeling Good, that high sustained note at the end start with a totally straight tone, no vibrato, and then Adam adds warmth by adding a nice vibrato towards the end.
I think people who dislike or complain about vibrato are referring to the type that is so broad that you can hardly tell what the actual pitch is, kinda making one sea-sick with the rolling. Or the type that is so rapid it sounds like a goat saying, "baaaaahhh". But well-used vibrato is ubiquitous in many different genres. And, Adam is a master at using vibrato as well as many other techniques.
