I just caught up on DDD and some people were ragging on the vibrato a bit after the EMA. Like it's just not a valid part of rock singing. Oops I guess I didn't make my point clear, I think noreaster is right that after the EMA's the "vibrato accusation" probably started with a troll at TWOP, quickly spread to MJ's and then as it usually happens became a handy drum that certain people kept beating loudly in order to put an Adam performance down. But I just don't remember anyone seizing on it before in the 3 years of countless sessions of what-can we-bash-Adam-about-this-time at the usual Idol hangouts. I remember Daughtry being accused of sounding goat-like, but never Adam. So I'm curious if anyone remembers any discussion at DDD before the EMA's ever happened of any performance where they thought Adam's vibrato was too pronounced or whatever. Oh, I get it now. It does seem odd that people are criticizing the vibrato, when he has always had it, and it is one of the things that makes his voice so compelling. I have a theory --- just a theory. In TSMGO, Freddie does use some vibrato, but he cuts notes and phrases shorter than Adam does, so it is not as noticeable. I think the purists were surprised to hear it. But, more basically, I think that the EMA performance was so strong, Adam's voice was so present, he hit all the notes Freddie hit and then some, he did more with the vocals than Freddie did, he looked so powerful, he ate up the stage. What could you possibly find to fault in that performance? And fault one must find, or one is being disloyal to Freddie. How can one say that the EMA performance was as good, as enjoyable, as moving, as powerful, as compelling as Freddie at his finest? And how could Adam Lambert, a reality TV star actually sound better and out-sing the Queen King, Freddie Mercury?So, one attacks the vibrato. See? There! Lambert messed it up. Too much bleating vibrato. Don't like the performance. Do you think that is a plausible explanation? |
