Radio concert lineup unveiled

“American Idol” hopeful-turned-superstar Adam Lambert thrilled 50 lucky fans yesterday at a swanky, invite-only event at the W Boston Hotel.

In town for the unveiling of the 2012 KISS Concert lineup (May 19 at the Comcast Center), Lambert performed two songs — new single “Better Than I Know Myself” and title track “Trespassing” — and sat down with the Herald to chat.

“I love Boston, I really do. It’s so chill, everyone’s so laid-back here,” he said.

He promised to return once second disc “Trespassing” is released later this year.

“I’ve been working on it for over a year and the songs that made the cut are all unbelievable,” he said.

Before the performance in front of the cheering crowd, Matt Siegel of Matty in the Morning revealed the impressive list of artists for the May show. The headliners include Lambert, Flo Rida, Gym Class Heroes and Enrique Iglesias. Local rising stars on the bill are Karmin, Sammy Adams and JoJo — who also performed at yesterday’s event.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, Lambert doesn’t have a favorite on this season of “Idol.”

“I’ve been so busy, I haven’t been watching any TV,” he said.

Singer Adam Lambert thrilled a small crowd at an invitation-only acoustic event at PinZ, performing his biggest hit, and answering questions.

A relaxed, good-humored Adam Lambert answered questions, met some of his fans and performed two songs in an acoustic show Wednesday at PinZ, including his hit "Whataya Want From Me?"

Lambert, who was the runner-up in the American Idol competition of 2009, and who many felt should have won, is promoting a new album. His appearance in Milford was arranged by the Worcester radio station WXLO, as part of its Music Loft on the Road series, said Bob Goodell, director of sales.

"It's a lot more exciting to bring out an artist like this to a small town, where it really creates a buzz."

The concert was invitation-only for 100 people. Most tickets were given away by the radio station to callers who phoned in at the right times. Some were distributed by PinZ. And some were given to donors of the Lupus Foundation of New England. One woman donated $1,000 to the Lupus Foundation, for the chance to see Lambert in a small venue, Goodell said.

Marilyn Saucier of Worcester was among the lucky 100. She won a pair of tickets after calling the radio station over and over again, until finally, she was the 14th caller. "I was trying for days and days," said Saucier, 52, who brought her friend Gennie along with her.

Both women became Lambert fans during American Idol, when many Americans thought he should have been named the winner. Instead, he was voted the runner-up, but went on to a more celebrated solo career than the winner.

Jane Phelan, 69, also won tickets after calling the radio station. Before Wednesday, she had seen Lambert twice before in concert. "I was trying very desperately to win," she said. "Three times a day, every time they said it."

Flamboyant and edgy singer Adam Lambert of “American Idol” fame ratcheted it down last night, offering a low-key acoustic set for 100 lucky fans at Pinz.

“What Do You Want From Me?” and “Better Than I Know Myself,” the new single from his most recent album, “Trespassing.” Delighted fans also got to ask him questions during the show, which was followed by a meet-and-greet.

Lambert said he loves performing small shows.

“Twitter is a great way to connect with people, but it’s not human,” Lambert said. “I really love to see and talk to people, at least those not looking through their cameras.”

Fans had won tickets to the private show through Facebook and Twitter contests or at wxlo.com. Radio station WXLO also held on-air giveaways throughout the week.

Erin Sias of Bellingham got her tickets through Pinz’s Facebook page by writing a poem giving reasons why she should win. She brought along her daughter, Bree Peck, a high-schooler who is also a big Lambert fan.
Maureen Gainley of Burlington received her tickets — meant for her daughter Marlea, a big Lambert fan — after being the 14th caller to WXLO.

Jodie Miller of West Boylston brought her friend Debbie Merriam of Shrewsbury.

“I’m the big ‘American Idol’ fan,” Merriam said. “I voted for him on the show and haven’t voted since he lost.”
WXLO also gave tickets to the Lupus Foundation of New England, and donors of $250 or more received tickets to the show.

Beverly Goodell, the director of events at the foundation, said Lambert made an invaluable contribution to the foundation without even knowing, raising more than $2,000.

“People were extremely generous,” Goodell said. “We couldn’t thank XLO enough.”

Tracy Holland of Worcester donated well over the asking price to see her favorite musician. Holland was persistent — radio host Stephen Donovan of “The Jen and Steve Morning Show” said Holland called about 14 times a day.

Holland created a T-shirt for Lambert featuring an acrostic poem of his first name.

“I should have done his last name, too,” she said. “It would have been, ‘lovely and mesmerizing, being ever-so-reverent to all.’ ”

The show was organized by WLXO as a part of its Music Loft series and to help Lambert promote his new album. Bob Goodell, director of sales at WXLO, said he chose Pinz for its location and small-town feel.

“We have a lot of listeners in MetroWest,” he said. “We’re looking to create some excitement in a small town.”

Pinz co-owner Elaine Breen, a big American Idol fan, said she was ecstatic that WXLO chose her business for the show.

“Its fabulous having him in the town of Milford,” she said, “He’s a major rock star.”

Lambert said he has no plans to tour yet, but he will be performing a few shows this summer as Queen’s front man.

His local fans were aglow with his visit.

Poet Sias said, “We had a really good time, up close and personal.’’

He takes a dig at people who watch gigs through their cameras

Every gig you go to, there are fans on tip toes and jostling with other fans to capture the perfect picture with their phones or cameras. However, do they miss the best parts of the show by focusing on this instead of the music and the spectacle?

Adam Lambert has taken a dig at concert goers who watch the entire show behind a camera screen. He played an intimate acoustic gig in Massachusetts in the US last night for 100 competition winners. And even though he praised small venues, where intimacy and humanity is at the forefront, he also pointed out that he wanted to see "people".

The Milford Daily News reported that he told the crowd "Twitter is a great way to connect with people, but it's not human. I really love to see and talk to people, at least those not looking through their cameras."

ADAM LAMBERT PERFORMS EXCLUSIVE SET FOR 100 FANS

Around 100 lucky people got to see Adam Lambert live in a very relaxed setting on Wednesday night – Adam performed two songs in Worcester sponsored by PinZ and WXLO.

Adam answered questions about his favorite designer (Skingraft – whose leather jacket he wore on Wednesday), whether he likes Twitter (he does: @adamlambert), his favorite toothbrush color (neon green), and whether he likes pens.

The pen question made him laugh. “Yeah,” he said, after a pause. And what color? “I’m really feeling yellow right now.”
