When #ItsAdamsFault trended earlier this week, it was a revelation to see all the trouble that Adam has caused to his fans. I'm sure he means well, but let's face it—the guy should come with a warning label. It might read something like this:

Active Ingredients: Concentrated bert. This high-potency product causes temporary relief of minor (and major) real-life aches and pains.

Uses: To create feelings of euphoria, well-being, and joie de vivre, aka berting. Use as directed to increase one's sense of adventure and connectedness with like-minded individuals.

Warnings: May cause insomnia, fatigue, rapid heart rate, and wanderlust.

Side effects may include: extreme lack of productivity; emaciation and dehydration caused by poor dietary habits; social isolation; and bloating of the credit card balance. In extreme cases can cause night sweats, global wandering, and outbursts of giggling in Finnish.

Signs of overdose: Irritability; loss of storage space on hard drive; F5 Fatigue Syndrome. The victim should be kept warm and calm. Forcible removal of the mouse from the victim's hand should not be attempted except by a professional. Apply earbuds and play Broken Open or Acoustic Aftermath until help arrives.

Risk of addiction is extremely high. Persons afflicted by bert are highly contagious, and bert spreads rapidly through vulnerable populations via Twitter and YouTube links. There is no known cure. Seek medical attention immediately if berting lasts over 4 ~~hours~~ years. This is a medical emergency. Or else it's just normal.

I stopped posting for a long time. Didn't feel like a worthy stan any longer.
It all began at Wilkes-Barre GN concert when my pitch perfect ears detected off key notes during WWFM and a couple of others. Such a surprise and puzzlement!

Over the next weeks, it horrifically dawned that the pitch problem was not Adam, it was MY EARS. There is some hereditary early deafness in the family but this was something completely different. Entire bands of sound disappeared and others distorted to the point of making songs unrecognizable and woolly. For an Adam stan this is beyond cruel and sad.

Over the summer, after being told there's no fix, I lurked and silently squeed with you all. Thanks for all your wonderful posts which helped fill in the blanks - From your ears to mine, dear Atops!

A hearing challenged stan like myself is fortunate that Adam is so much more than just his voice. An honest, brave and inspirational entity - a Pied Piper who entrances music fans, intellectuals and industry peers alike with his talent and humanity. Was so proud to see our BB and his gorgeous soul-mate Sauli at Elton's table with Katy Perry. And the blazing smile on Brian May's face at the EMA's. THEY GET IT (just like we do). Makes me so happy.

Not hearing well doesn't stop me drooling over all the fabulous pix either - so many fantastic ones lately! HOT!!! No more Colonel Sanders for Adam. Despite missing the full spectrum of that beautiful voice, I can still revel in so many things AFL. Yessss!

This is not a pity party. Cassie interacts with people so much worse off than me.
My message is... please everyone TAKE.CARE.OF.YOUR.HEARING! It is SO precious and too easy to take for granted.

It was weeks before I dared launch the BTIKM video. Good headphones help but was scared it would be unintelligeable jumble, like so much of FYE is for me now. But while missing huge layers of notes, the beat is strong, the emotion drives through and actually sounds pretty good, as did the pieced together Trespassing clip. Am encouraged!!!

So... taking Adam's lead - am going for the gusto by posting again and heading to SONISPHERE with Ileanne and Stampsgal. Maybe not with all my faculties any longer but with a heart full of joy.

It can also start to isolate you from others, if understanding speech becomes difficult. A common reaction is to start to withdraw from the things and the people you used to love.

But, you are not doing that. You are embracing what you have, making connections with people, and finding new ways to appreciate Adam and life in general. That takes guts, but what other choice do you really have? Life goes on and you have to just plunge in there and enjoy it for all its ordinary miracles.

Fortunately, Adam is such a total package that there is much to embrace even if you cannot hear all that his music has to offer. I know he has deaf fans who can still hear and feel the beat, see the wonderful performances, read the emotion in his face and body. I am sure you will be swept away with everyone else at Sonisphere. Good for you for reclaiming that part of your life. And thank you for sharing something this personal with us.

Thanks also for the reminder to all to take care to protect your hearing. That means not listening to your iPods with ear buds jammed in your ears and the volume dialed to maximum. It means wearing ear plugs when going to concerts. It means wearing ear protectors when you are using loud yard equipment. It means not rolling down the windows in your car while driving down the freeway, and then turning the radio WAY UP to hear it over the roar of the traffic and wind. We all lose some hearing as we grow older, but there is much we can do to slow that loss.
