Someday -- when we are all old -- there will be a book written about Rise of Adam Lambert and we will learn what actually happened behind the scenes and why BTIKM was picked.

The only thing I know is that RCA thought it would be a hit in December 2011. This is based on comments made directly to me. And there is no doubt that both RCA and Adam have worked extremely hard for the airplay they have gotten.

But all of that work is laying the foundation for the next single -- which hopefully will be Cuckoo or another dance-pop track.

ETA: And what happened to Adam working with Max Martin again? It never seemed like a great working relationship but Adam did say it was planned but then it never happened.

If Adam had picked a lead single, I think he would have picked a song that represents the album creatively and a song he co-wrote not a song where most of the money and royalties go to Claude Kelly and Dr. Luke. He seemed to be publicly campaigning for Cuckoo and Trespassing last Fall.

We do not know when Chokehold was finished do we? Just that it was not on the list of 6 preview tracks which included BTIKM, Cuckoo, Trespassing, OOL, Shady and Broken English.

In any case, if I think about the Atlanta performance as demos, it seems like Cuckoo is the big hit.

And I think the Bruno Mars track may be a potential big hit too.

Finally, Adam created a concept album but he wants pop hits. He said, "Wait till you hear the tracks. My mom sent me the YouTube videos. I listened to them, and you can't hear all the tracks we've been working so hard on, so that it gets on radio and turns into a big, worldwide hit." So is he more or less an album oriented artist than other pop stars? I need to hear the album first but he has often talked about creating playlists vs. albums. So I think he understands that people control the music they want to listen to, the sequence, and the mix of artists.

Who picked the single doesn't affect my conclusion that it is the best PR choice. Adam's tracks are too diverse for any one song to represent the album creatively so the best choice is a song that sets up the overall concept which you just agreed was in place BEFORE the single was selected. When I say that Adam is more of an album artist I am speaking more in terms of sales as his album sales were much more in line with his single sales than seems to be the case for most pop stars whose singles sales seem to FAR outstrip their album sales. Adam's sales seemed more balanced to me. But Adam himself said that when it came down to selecting the tracks to go on the album the overall concept was what determined whether a song would fit.

I still see absolutely no evidence to support the idea that a dance track would have done better on radio right out of the gate regardless of how good the song was. The "Scary Gay Guy" effect is much the same as the "Angry Black Man" effect in that people tend to make baseline assumptions that are only changed through exposure. I feel that RCA actually made the absolute best choice in terms of presenting Adam to the public again but more importantly in terms of presenting Adam to radio itself. The repeated comments from DJ's around the country expressing their surprise at how nice and humble Adam is show quite clearly that he is battling A LOT of preconceived notions that people have and I doubt seriously that debuting with a sexy dance track would have done as good a job of showcasing Adam as BTIKM is doing. He needed a promo track that was going to emphasize the VOICE over anything else and this has done that.

Obviously this is only MY opinion and no one else is obligated to agree but I see a lot of people making assumptions that other songs would have been better but not a lot of evidence to support those theories especially as all we have are descriptions of songs and not withstanding live performances we still have absolutely no idea what the studio recordings of ANY of these tracks sound like. Speculation is all fine and good but is usually best when supported by logical argument otherwise it is like a big game of pin the tail on the donkey. Personally I think the back room politics of radio are seedier than the average Louisiana election politics. There is no demonstrable logic to what radio plays and everything I've read about behind the scenes also shows that regardless of whatever statistics or research might be available it still boils down to the personal choice of either the corporate heads or the program directors who have shown repeatedly that they are nothing but power hungry assholes. If the PTB at radio who decide on playlists gave a shit about quality of music we wouldn't be listening to half the crap that we are.

Have only read p.1 so far today, but decided to go ahead and jump in with my DJ story from yesterday while I have time!

I have to be in KC 17th-26th so I tried all last week for tickets to The Point 99.7 for 3/19 Adam visit. 20x I called, closest I got was caller #7 twice. The last giveaway was yesterday afternoon, and YAY! DJ answered! BOO! I was caller #11.

But DJ Tanna was SO friendly/talkative! As soon as she started giddily talking, I took notes (had paper/pencil ready, because I was visualizing myself winning tix, lol). She talked for almost 5 minutes!

Tanna: Oh, I'm so sorry, you're caller #11, tickets are all gone.

Me: Oh, no...no more chances? Well, at least I can come to the station and catch a glimpse of him while he's there.

Tanna: Umm, I don't think so... WE HAVE NEVER HAD A RESPONSE LIKE THIS, IT'S OFF THE HOOK, OVER THE TOP. The volume of phone calls is crazy, I have emails from people with cancer who say meeting Adam is their dying wish, people begging for tickets. We thought about trying to fit in more people, but don't think it's going to happen. Our sister station in Sacramento*said the last time Adam was there their parking lot was MOBBED and they suggested we find someplace besides the station and not disclose the location. So you probably WON'T get to see him...

Me: OH, NO!! I'll volunteer to wear a vest and direct traffic or do crowd control or whatever! Don't you want Adam to know how excited KC is to have him here?

Tanna: (laughing) Don't worry, he'll know! We'll tell him! What I wanna know is how the hell did Adam NOT win Idol? Can you believe that? He is SO much better than Kris. You better believe we'd never get a response like this for Kris Allen. I STILL can't believe Adam didn't win. Do you watch Idol? Why do you think Adam didn't win?

Me: I don't--it was sheer luck that I saw Adam in Jan.09--and I was hooked. I think maybe he was just too much for AI viewers--too different, too good--

Tanna: TOO SEXY! He's so out there, he's so not ashamed of who he is, yeah, that's what I think, too! Doesn't matter, he's a star. We just wish we could have more people see him, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

Me: How will I be able to find out whether he'll come to the station or whether you're gonna hide his ass from us?!

Tanna: (laughing loudly) I'm so sorry! Why don't you email me with your ideas (I'd offered some) and I'll let you know what's gonna happen once we decide?

I left out A LOT, but really she babbled about Adam like a FANGIRL and seemed genuinely sorry that so many peeps responded and weren't going to get to see him--and interested in how they could maximize his visit. Imma do some research on the station (have they added BTIKM--I don't think so) and gather my ideas/questions and SEND THAT EMAIL tonight!
Who knows, maybe at the very least she'll tell me where they'll decide to have him show up and I CAN at least catch a glimpse/get a hug.
That's all I want for my birthday!

Th-th-that's all folks! Just more proof that when these radio stations say they're getting a huge response, I'm sure it's not an exaggeration. And that makes me soooo happy! (SO PLAY THE DAMN SONG!)

I'm really interested about peeps who have gotten to see him--MISHA/MAYUMI--was the event at the actual station? Were fans waiting outside for Adam when you got there/left?

Just a thought on Adam attending Alisan's wedding. One of the questions that was asked of Adam a short while ago was about friends vs. carrer. He did say that now he was focusing on his work and that his friends, many of whom are in the business understand. I wonder if he was thinking about this wedding. Anyway, I do hope he can attend it for I WANT MORE PRETTY PICTURES.
