So - new songs from established hit makers get played based on the artists track records while NEW artists pick up spins based on feedback to stations -- but how is someone like Adam not in a catch 22 here? He's not at the automatic play level (Rihanna, Gaga) but the powers that be seem to feel that requests for his songs are not reliable indicators of song likeability because of his large, organized fan base. Is that an issue? If so, is Adam completely at the mercy of PD's subjective judgement re wether his singles are 'likeable' or not - unlike say Ellie Goulding (sp) or Young the Giant (whatever)? There is radio research like rabbit participated in tonight. There is also radio research done by some type of callout procedure. Then, radio stations pay attention to general buzz about certain songs. Stations definitely use itunes as an indicator of what songs are popular or not.

You can clearly see, if you pause the video, that it is a six-string guitar. [red] Bass guitars have only four strings[/red], and are very rarely used to play a lead line. The range for a bass guitar is too low to get that lead guitar zing and wail. (Okay, yes, you could say that the bass guitar does a lead line in Another One Bites the Dust, and very effectively. But it sounds very deep, not twangy like a regular electric guitar.) Just needed to correct the part in red above.... bass guitars are actually available in 4, 5, 6 and 8 string versions. Oh and ..... #trylivinginwesternCanada

But is his lead guitar a regular electric guitar, or is it a bass guitar? For some reason I thought it was a lead bass guitar... Regular guitar that is playing LEAD on the song - Bass guitar & drums lay down the beat for a song - know this from playing in Jazz bands Like this ~ Bass & Drum are together - while Nile plays on top of them!

Thanks for answering. I just always thought he had a lead bass for some reason.

For fun, I googled bass guitars and clicked on images. In eight pages of images there were two six-string basses, and two five string basses. No 8 string varieties. Tommy plays a 4-string bass.

Good example of a very funky bass starting at 3:12. A 4-string bass, if you please.

Interesting. I seem to remember Ashley showing off a new Fender 5string she called a Jazz Bass. So what might that mean in the whole scheme of things?

She was playing a 5 string bass in Trespassing. However, having listened to it carefully, she does not use that 5th string at all in the song. (It is used for verrrrry deep, low bass notes).

The bass player in the band I work with was loaned a 5 string bass and FELL in love with it. Apparently it's quite expensive and someone rather famous owns it. All those sorts of details go right past me. All the boys think it's the cats meow....FWIW.
