that's what I thought the cuckoo in the song meant, like KUKKUU!! This is really interesting! When I hear the word cuckoo in the song it is perfect, to me it means crazy in a silly way. Now I am wondering if for international listeners the song will lose that part of what makes it great? Could that word make the song have a weird or confusing meaning internationally that would take away from its charm? Some random Cuckoo facts  Back in 1983, an animated short film from Bulgaria was released by a student of animation (Velislav Kasakov) and won all sorts of international film festival awards. The content of the short was about a guy in a mad house who was doing all kinds of crazy stuff until at the end he was "cured" and released into the "sane society" which was just a gray mass of faceless people marching on the streets... The title of the movie was later used as the title of a very popular TV comedy show (even the title sequence of the show used portions of the animated short). And again it was meant to be kind of crazy. I remember a Russian joke about a clock-makers competition in the Soviet Union where the second place finisher made a clock where every hour a bird would jump out and call "Lenin! Lenin!", while the first place winner made a clock where every hour Lenin would jump out of the clock and shout "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!". Both prices for the competition were tickets to Siberia, but the second price included a return ticket  To this day, when I cross the street at a light with blind signals that sound like "Cuckoo", me and my wife usually joke "Lenin! Lenin!" So at least in some Slavic languages like Bulgarian and Russian, "Cuckoo" clocks and being crazy is what comes to mind first. And peekaboo, too. |
