Report from The Bing Lounge
By abriton
I was at Bing yesterday with JoGib (Atop lurker). We got 2nd row seats right in front of Adam!! The acoustics were great and it was a very intimate space. There is no doubt that he is best seen and heard live! The voice and charisma are huge. NCOE is my favourite and the live performance was fantastic; probably because he changes a song up every time he sings it so it is fresh. When he asked what we wanted for the third song, the loudest cheers were for Trespassing and Cuckoo. Dunno why he went with WWFM ! I was slightly disappointed as I feel it was an opportunity to finish with a new song. Jo and I got our pics taken just the two of us with Adam ! It must have been our lucky day, what with the second row seats! He looked so slim, clear and composed. The voice was EFFORTLESS AND FLAWLESS!
Late recap of going to the Bing Lounge:
Posted by rabbitrabbit
I went with Mr. Rabbit, and we were in the back half of the line, hoping to avoid too much in the cold waiting, although they still let in folks an hour after they said the doors would open so everyone was a bit frozen. We chatted a little with someone I follow on twitter so it was fun. The venue holds 160 and was full. The crowd was fairly diverse but seemed to lean more suburban/rural as well as some Portland metro area fans. I think there were a lot of idol fans. There were some Durbinators standing behind me. This new HAC station adds idol songs right away and has had a lot of idols come through on visits, but so far doesn't seem to play many of them (except for Daughtry and Kelly) except overnight. Some couples, some families. Some fans were given the limited seated tickets (not necessarily just those at the front of the line, It looked possibly like older fans were given them too which was nice).
It really was only a few moments after the standing ticketed people were let in that the DJ announced Adam, so the crowd wasn't 'warmed up' figuratively or literally, lol. I thought the DJ was fine, he's kinda full of himself on air, but also charming, and he wanted to pick the amusing questions out of the many, many they had collected. I felt bad when he asked the crying girl to read her own question since she was still overcome, but it turned out cute and she was fine with it.
Adam looked beautiful of course, and he was very quick to react and code-switch to get on the same wavelength to patter with the DJ. I was delighted that he sung the Katy Perry song, since he usually demurs on these kind of requests. He was full of energy. When he called out his aunt and uncle they jumped out of their seats and waved from the back, it was cute.
NCOE sounded AMAZING. The venue had very clear acoustics and Adam was miked but it didn't sound like it. His voice was strong, extremely controlled, powerful, and (esp. with the mike) LOUD. It was like being buffeted by precise surround sound in a movie theater. Waves of vocal vibrations, rasps, moans, wails, pure tones just rolled out from him and filled the space. I had mental images of trees toppling and armies being flattened if Adam was pointed in the right direction. I think the crowd was a little stunned (and maybe still frozen) which is why they were so still and silent when he was singing. I was dancing in the back because I couldn't not move to the song. It's very much a dance song to me, even acoustic I want to rave.
When he asked about the new songs parts of the crowd were cheering for them, but I think the majority of the crowd hadn't heard of them before so didn't know how to choose between Trespassing and Cuckoo and just went for a song they recognized and liked. It might have been different if he'd just asked if people wanted to hear another new song.
It was all so fast after people had been let in as well, I think some people just weren't really reacting at all yet and didn't vote. (I voted for both Trespassing and Cuckoo as loudly as I could both times).
I was a bit puzzled that if the near the front seated people were mostly stans who had lined up really early they weren't showing more signs of life during the songs, although everyone clapped and cheered after the songs, and NCOE got a great reception.
There were young women standing on the sides dancing and grooving along to WWFM, so the casual fans there seemed very happy to hear it.
As soon as Adam finished and left the stage, they started trying to make room for the photos near the back of the venue where half the crowd was standing. It was very crowded and chaotic with no line, and they pushed groups of four toward Adam as soon as the previous group had reached him. Literally about 10 seconds between groups. It was so quick almost forget to say anything to Adam until he turned to me and held out his hand. I shook politely and said hi, and he leaned around me to greet Mr. Rabbit and say nice to meet you. Adam was very gentle and beaming at everyone, so it was totally cool, just really fast.
I think some people who wanted to took more time, so it all worked out -- except don't look at the meet n' greet photos because aside from Adam and a few exceptions everyone looks like the derpiest ever, like animals springing trip wires photographed instantly. The crowd was a little bit better looking in real life. :D
So, so glad I had the chance to go. Mr. Rabbit (who is a casual fan) loved Adam's performance as well.

A Tale of Two (or three or four) Singles
3.26.12 by Q3
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Charles Dickens » A Tale of Two Cities » Chapter 1 published April 1859 to November 1859.
Yesterday, I had a conversation with a colleague who is an entertainment industry analyst. We talked about the dramatic restructuring that the shift to digital music has caused. Really nothing earth shattering was discussed – the same old discussion about creative destruction and innovation. The center of it all – the destruction of the recorded music sales model that has fueled the music business since the death of sheet music, and the emergence of new models.
It was an interesting conversation. Just for a bit of history to make this all make sense….
For the music business it was the best of times, and the worst of times. Wisdom was hard to find, but there were glimmers of intelligence and signs that someone might find a way to solve the puzzle.
Q3 March 25, 2012
The first innovation – the general public will support art.
1700’s – Composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart started performing for the general public vs. royalty and aristocrats. (touring)
The second innovation – the democratization of music – everyone can play.
1800’s – Sheet music become the main vehicle for making money in the music business. It was affordable -- and an essential addition to the pianos found in many middle class households.
The third innovation – recorded and broadcast music slowly kills off sheet music.
1877 – the phonograph is invented.
1920 – first AM radio broadcast.
1954 – pocket transistor radio.
1979 – compact disc standardized.
The fourth innovation – music goes digital.
Late 1990’s – digital radio + peak of recorded music sales.
1999 – SoundJam MP, developed by Bill Kincaid and released by Casady & Greene; renamed iTunes when Apple purchased it in 2000.
1999 – Napster the first generation P2P or Peer-to-peer file sharing software released.
July 2, 2001 – Gen 3 P2P software with the release of BitTorrent client.
November 10, 2001 – the iPod was released.
During the 1960’s the promotional concept of the “lead single” was developed. I do not think anyone invented it, it just happened. A record company would have a hit single, then release the album and it usually was a hit album. If it works, just do it again – and again. [Sure more is involved but you get the point.]
Fast forward to 2012. We are now deep into the digital music era. The entire music world is being restructured. [Translation – the labels/producers/musicians/performers/songwriters can’t sell enough albums anymore to pay for everything – they need new sources of revenue.]
After the conversation with my friend, I started to think about the implications of the digital conversion on promotion – and because I have an Adam-fan lens on the music business – I wondered, “What does the economic restructuring mean for Adam and his music?”
There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.
Charles Dickens “The Pickwick Papers”
I am an optimist – not so much for the music business but for Adam. His light shines brightly and, if he is willing, he willing he will be able to entertain us for years and years to come.
So what does this have to do with singles?
Let me start with a few numbers.
Tracks: In 2011, digital track sales hit a new high: 1.27 billion units, up 8.5% over last year's 1.17 billion.
Albums: Up 1.3% in 2011, climbed for the first time since 2004, selling 330.6 million copies, compared with 326.2 million in 2010. Digital albums rose 19.5% to a record 103.1 million, compensating for CD sales, which dipped 5.7%.
Only a few albums matter: In 2011, the industry released 76,875 new albums that sold at least one copy, and they accounted for 34% of the year's sales; 90% of that take was from the top-selling 1,500.

With the increased importance of track sales and digital album sales, and with the ability to “complete” a digital album and get credit for prior track purchases, everything has changed. Musicians who have multiple hit singles are usually the artists who sell more digital albums. Some marketing experts think that the “magic number” is 3 – that is, once someone buys their third track they are very likely to complete the album. If this is true, and sales over the past few years indicates it is, rather than one megahit single, artist needs to have 2 or 3 or even 4 singles – and they do not all need to be megahits.
So, my hope for Adam is that he has 3 singles that get airplay and sell – and at least one big pop radio hit.

And because I cannot resist…
"Tell Wind and Fire where to stop," returned

And to end with my favorite comment from yesterday’s thread – from SusieFierce, “It's easy to get caught up in the "ZOMG!! He NEEDS a HIT!!" but he will be fine.”
Please allow me the liberty to make one change modification to this….
It's easy to get caught up in the "ZOMG!! He NEEDS a HIT!!" but he
