My theory is that by not releasing a single after IIHY in the US but continuing to release various songs around the world they put US radio in the position of having to push them to release something. I've have long had a feeling that the way Adam's rollout was structured they were always erring on the side of making radio come to them. My feeling is that they did very strategically specific pushes along the way for WWFM and IIHY but for the most part let TV and video in the beginning and then later tour and video do the majority of the promotion. They also did more small station promo combined with the tour but again it seemed to me that in most of those cases the stations were competing and pushing to get him because of the demand rather than him having to fight for promo spots. I remember when people were complaining early in the album release cycle that he wasn't doing enough radio promo and my gut feeling then was that they focused more on pushing TV and VH1 and kind of played hard to get with radio maybe doing deals with just a few big stations initially like Z100 then IIHY actually started with small stations mostly adding along the way coinciding with tour dates. I just strongly feel that they have been making radio come to them. Doing Aftermath as a charity release is a great way to "let" radio have another single and promo has probably built naturally as news of the release got out. Adam stated clearly early on that it WOULDN'T be released to radio and now it is which to me says maybe the radio stations themselves pushed for it. My understanding was that RCA had to push really hard to get radio stations to play Adams music. I don't think they were waiting for the stations to come to them, but rather the other way around. Again this is just my theory, but from watching the discussions on Pulse the pushes were extremely directed and not simply broad sweeps. They pushed the big stations first for WWFM and started that song with several key large stations but the song built slowly and they did not have Adam doing any Jingle Balls promotions initially. After all the controversy he was added late as a presenter on a few of them and several comments from the stations themselves seemed to indicate that they had to push to get Adam there. Then they were impressed as all get out with the response to the meet and greets. WWFM got a few more very focused pushes the most notable being tied to the AI performance which was the push to get cumulus group to add. The rollout for IIHY was almost exactly opposite in that they did no initial push and the song started mostly with small stations. It seemed they timed a push with the larger stations later in the songs trajectory and of course they did tour promo. But remember the tour was basically selling out so this actually gives them leverage with radio as they didn't NEED radio to sell tickets. The perception difference can be huge. They didn't do a lot of radio advertising just mostly pre concert interviews and meet and greets which showed radio that there was incredible demand. Then by not releasing another single on the heels of IIHY he was essentially dark in many markets. For instance in Orlando both WWFM and IIHY were immediately dropped from rotation almost completely as soon as they peaked on the chart. However after the Grammy nomination WXXL suddenly started playing WWFM a few times a day. I noticed because I hadn't heard the song at all for a while. I think going dark gave a chance for radio stations to hear from people wondering where Adam was. Over this time as well I came across many instances of radio station across the country being asked when a new Adam song would be played and the DJ's were generally saying hopefully soon. With other songs being released overseas and charting it starts to make an impression. Most people don't remember that radio was not initially hugely receptive to Gaga. The first song release here didn't shoot straight to the top and actually ended up charting after her second or third single because she got really strong reception overseas. Anyway it's just been my impression all along that even though they did push the first two songs the targeted nature of those pushes allowed them to build a psychological position of strength in that he didn't desperately need radio. They actually focused much of his launch in the more visual mediums of TV and videos. The media fascination with him as well shows that even without radio he would be successful it just wouldn't be the same kind of success. I really think you cannot discount the power that comes from being in demand during promo cycles as opposed to having to push promo. Remember that the launch of the IIHY video had several outlets competing for it and they chose VH1. That shows right there that Adam was in a position of power in those negotiations.

I'm not so sure Rhi's theory doesn't have some merit actually. A lot of artists USED to go overseas to promote themselves and then they would break them in the U.S. NSYNC did this as did bands in the 80s. I think with Adam's continued success in the overseas market that it's easily believable that U.S. radio could finally be accepting that listeners will not only accept hearing Adam on the radio but they WANT to hear him on the radio. With the release of each new song that charted well outside the U.S. that was just further proof that Adam is a viable and marketable pop star. I get that there are plenty of international pop stars that get next to no radio play in the U.S. but I'm not sure how not many of them are from the U.S. and none are from American idol in particular. It would just make U.S. radio look silly IMO. I'm not dismissing any theory. Learning, and watching. And listening. Always listening.

This is a very interesting theory and I hope it is true. I really think they had to use very different tactics with Adam. Rihannsu, I just noticed you are in Davenport, FL, I am in Spring Hill, FL not too far away! I wanted to say that 933flz in Tampa played WWFM and IIHY quite a bit but not nearly as much as the usual suspects. When Adam performed at Tropicana Field and there were supposedly up to 20k people that stayed for the concert, not to mention stellar reviews, I thought local radio would take notice and realize that Adam was a draw and more popular than they thought. However they still dropped IIHY fairly quickly after it peaked while they still played other music ad nauseum. I still think many PDs are resistant to Adam because of his sexuality and it has taken Adam and his management going to much greater lengths than usual to prove that the public is much more accepting than they think. I live just south of you and I said this yesterday about 933flz they did drop him but mix100 has been playing both songs all day up until a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to see if they play Aftermath. I made my requests on both stations this morning. I think Ryan's show is at 2pmEST on 933flz On another note those living on the West Coast of Florida we should get together and do our own GNT/DVD showing when it comes out. That might be cool. I'm already going to Mayumi's get together the first weekend of April but maybe we could also do something either before or after that. Wonderstruck is in St Pete too so we should all talk.

Oh I didn't think you or anyone else was dismissing Rih's theory I was just saying it kind of made some sense to think that U.S. radio might be finally ready to accept that Adam is an artist their listeners want to hear. Adam is very old school IMO and it wouldn't surprise me if he and his team decided to market him the way artists used to be marketed. Hell I think even Bon Jovi broke overseas before they became huge in the U.S. LOL
