I would like to say “Thank You” to Adam

Over the past three + years I have learned a lot about being a fan – the good parts and the not so good times parts of fandom. Thankfully, most of being an Adam fan has been beyond good.

1. Giving me new wardrobe ideas. I used to wear a lot of black, but now I have learned that I can mix in purple and gray.

I love this look but the comment form GQ The Week in Style: 05.20.11 just makes is soooo much better – Adam and his “buddy”.

1b. Demonstrating that when it comes to accessories “more can be more” – although I have not quite adopted the multiple chain look yet, I have taken it under advisement.



2. Sending me (and many of my closest digital friends) on the best roller coaster ride in the world. And even betterer, the admission cost is just having internet access and the ride has lasted for over 3 years – not at all like the great rollercoaster rides at Cedar Point, OH that are over almost as soon as they start.



3. Convincing me to take a leap of faith and change me whole life….with the lyrics of a song.

4. Expanding my vocabulary with a whole dictionary of Adamized words and with an expanded knowledge of the Urban Dictionary – far beyond anything that anyone who knows me could ever imagine!!


5. Introducing me to me to a new, amazing galaxy – the Eye of Horus Galaxy. (NGC-1097 (=17, CK), is located 50 million light-years away. It is spiral-shaped like our Milky Way, with long, spindly arms of stars. The 'eye' at the center of the galaxy is actually a monstrous black hole surrounded by a ring of stars.)



6. Making me a couple decades younger – well at least making Google think that I am 25 years old – a virtual fountain of youth – because my internet searches completely fooled Google’s predictive models.



7. Planning my summer vacation which now includes trips to exotic places like London and Wilkes Barre.




8. Providing me with a real demonstration of how much my husband loves me because he has agreed to spend his summer vacation in exotic places like London and Wilkes Barre.


9. But mostly, thanks for your voice and the music.

My favorite snippit changes with my mood and they've almost all had a turn, but the one I keep going back to is Broken English. I really, really love it. Love the backstory, love the lyrics, love the weird sci-fi intro and the alien sounds thrown in. Even more, I love the message of the song, and I think it captures something very basic in Adam's personality—the vital importance to him of communication.

I can relate to the song on a personal level, having grown up in an ESL household. I've witnessed first-hand how many people hear an accent and stop listening. How quickly a person can become insignificant when others refuse to listen and pay attention, and how easy it is to only interact on a superficial level without looking more closely. I have endless respect for Adam and Sauli and for the fact that they persevered past the early "crossed wires" and trusted the feelings they had for each other enough to learn to communicate on a deep level.

But communication breakdown occurs all the time even among people who speak the same language. How many times do we ask, "how are you?" and barely wait for the answer? In our busy lives, it's easy to get trapped inside our heads and forget that everyone we meet is just like us—trying to get through the day, dealing as best they can with the bad stuff and taking pleasure in the good stuff.

Adam told us early on that Trespassing would allow us to see inside him, and judging by what we've heard, he wasn't kidding. From crazy to thoughtful to sexy to troubled, Adam has bared his soul. If FYE was all about entertaining us, Trespassing is about showing us who he is off-stage. But even more important to him is showing that we are all the same underneath. In FYE he told us we could all party together, and in Trespassing he bravely shows his heart and hopes we can recognize not only our own but those of others.

When Adam talks about people, he often uses words like energy and spirit. He has said that one of his pet peeves is people who don't make eye contact. When he talks of meeting Sauli he speaks of the instant connection despite the language barrier. Fans who have seen him in concert remark on his ability to focus on individuals and yet connect with the whole audience, and those who've met him in person are amazed at his intense focus on the person with whom he's engaged. Some of us may eyeroll, but even in his love of astrology, Adam uses it not as a way of predicting his course but rather to better understand people.

I believe that the idea of connectedness is one of Adam's driving forces. He prefers to look beyond labels and to find common emotional ground. He wants to bring people together, and uses his music to do so, whether we're dancing or crying or both at the same time.

I'll bet we can all talk about how Adam has inspired us to better commune with the human race and to connect with others in ways that break down the usual barriers. Just yesterday I was browsing old YTs and came across this 2-year old comment from an (I think) Swedish weightlifter on a vid of Adam singing Crazy. I think it's a perfect example:

"I dont care what cloths he is wearing. And i dont care about his love life. He is a human being like the rest of us. And his voice is 1 out a billion. Best fucking voice ive heard in my life Hope to hear more from Adam. Best regards from a powerlifting mean motherfucker. Peace" –mannendobos

Adam's voice and his music remind us that beyond language, beyond labels, we are all connected.
