YES to all, but I don't entirely agree with the remarks about the ladies of forty and fifty. You don't have to be part of a group to be sensitive to that group. Sometimes people outside of any particular group are enlightened and have no baggage. Many of us have felt the sting of bigotry in our lives. Bigotry is bigotry, hate is hate. but do you know how irritating it must be for gay men to be lectured by a 40 or 50 year old straight woman? I shake my head to be the point of it almost falling off my shoulders whenever I see this attitude and I see it a lot on the internet. This writer was lecturing from WITHING the gay community, from a place of knowledge and he is saying they need to accept the Adams and the Johnny's just like the accept the Neils so for someone to take offense to that doesn't make sense to me. I'll also add I get empathy or being sensitive to their plight. I'm a huge advocate for civil rights and equality for EVERYONE, be it gay or any minority. But I do NOT know what it's like to be discriminated against. I'm a middle class white woman for pete sake so I can't pretend to know what it feels like to live in that situation but I can fight with them side by side to ensure that someday they might be able to say they don't know either. I understand ,but as a woman ,you must hear and see the negativity that we as a group face.If not ,I want to live where you live.. LOL I also think that Adam can handle our love and concern for him. We are after all many of his greatest supporters.

Also worth noting is that the homophobia and self-hatred/self-reproachment that Mr. Article Writer (Love you nationalglampoon ) wrote about rather bravely, is that it is rooted in misogyny (the hatred of that which is feminine). What do Weir, Adam, "queens" have in common? They are all viewed as having the traits of a woman. All this hate comes from a weird, dark place. I'm going to get raked over the coals for this...but offering an opinion. No..I think when people take offense to this, that they're talking to basic. When they say effeminate, I think of it as people having a problem with OVERLY feminine people, which at times can make people feel uncomfortable. I have a friend and she was saying something about some of her gay friends. That she was a girly girl, but they sometimes act for feminine then she do. I think it's that over exaggeration of what people perceive as exaggerated negative straits of women, (catty, bitchy, always emotional, always competitive, full of drama, constantly nagging..etc.(I really hate these generalizations to be honest) that have been so pounded by media, other people they know, etc. in their minds, that even the little small onset of showing any femininity, and their minds automatically goes to thinking that they are this over exaggeration, and then in turn, writes them off. My own brother, (who is quite the homophobe ugh) said that he don't like gays because they act like the worst type of females, then he named those straits up above as what he thinks that entails.

A couple of observations. From a sociological point of view, it is common for an oppressed minority group to band together for mutual support and to have their own cultural norms. Some things are deeply cherished within the community, but are considered taboo to show or share outside of the community. Until recently, when sign language has become "neat" or "beautiful", deaf people were often labeled as gauche for flapping their hands and making such weird facial expressions (which are actually part of the language and serve as modifiers and grammatical markers). They were looked at by some as stupid and their language was considered "inferior" because it did not resemble English. Therefore, in the past, it was difficult for someone with normal hearing to ever become fluent in sign language, because it was hidden within the culture and something not to be shown or shared with the majority who would only use it to marginalize the deaf community. When deaf people chose to sign to people with normal hearing, they changed how they signed, and tried to emulate the grammar, structure, and look of standard English. Might there be a similar thing going on with certain aspects of gay culture? Things that are accepted and even embraced within the community but are taboo to show outside of it?
On the other subject of alpha males, I think of my dog pack --- where I think the concept originated with the study of wolves. The TRUE alpha male in the pack is NOT a bully, does not appear aggressive. In fact, he appears rather stately and calm, often indifferent to the other dogs around him. It is his domain, after all. He just IS, and doesn't have to show he is the boss. When another member of the pack gets out of line and needs discipline, all the alpha has to do is approach that dog with confidence and a certain posture, or just gaze directly at him/her, and the message is received.
Therefore, I don't see an alpha male as mean, aggressive, puffed up and going around showing how tough he is. At least in dogs, that role is generally for the #2 or #3 dog who is trying to appear to be the boss.
