I'm sat here with my girly white hair and nail polish crying that Mr. article writer thinks I'm a bad gay  Oh wait... ;D I hate people like that who think they can speak for everyone. Time to send him a tweet politely voicing my disapproval   I guess my biggest thing about disliking that article is that in an attempt to write an article against stereotyping, the author is stereotyping! :-/ Maybe stereotyping isn't the right word. I think the irony here is that he's telling people what they should and shouldn't be, resenting the people who fall under the latter, and insisting that everyone is behind him on his "facts". Isn't that exactly what homophobes do? |

I would like to say that the "protective mama" meme is something that many long-time posters have used in a self-deprecating way, acknowledging that what they are saying comes off like that--not that they believe Adam needs to be mothered.
I would like to thank Gelly for bringing over a thought-provoking article that has lead to a good discussion. (Tho we caused QueeenAl to leave the pool!)

Forgive my ignorance, for I have only found Adam within the year or so, and I am unfamiliar with the exact timing of things that happened before I was "born-again". When did the night-time photo of him and Sauli about to kiss in Helsinki hit the media? Did the article not mention that Sauli was a celebrity? Did it not make the tabloids in the US? And when did those Tutkas air--the one where Katri talks about meeting Adam and Sauli says nothing, and then the one where Sauli jokes that Adam was only putting his hands over his ears in greeting. I am wondering what part of Sauli's reactions Adam was viewing. If you Ninja's knew the next day or so, how did it take Adam a week to find out? I love this love story! I think there is a timeline somewhere, 4M will know, or check Sauli Central thread. Sorry I don't have time to find links for you I have it on Nov 05 2010 Vaguely recall an argument that it was the 6th.        |

First let me say Adam doesn't need a "protective mama" and part of the major problem I see Adam having continually is that attitude by women who are overprotective going off and acting like they know anything about the gay community when in fact they are straight 40-50 something ladies who don't live within that community and don't have a clue how the social structure works. The writer didn't say Adam OR Johnny were freaks. He said they are what many view as the 'stereotypical' gay man, not masculine ENOUGH. Adam wears makeup, Adam wears medges, Adam wears sheer shirts and leather pants. Adam IS androgynous so while he may not be as effeminate as Johnny Weir he isn't as butch as Neil Patrick Harris either. I thought the article was great. He is saying that REGARDLESS of how the public views an Adam or a Johnny, as a community they should embrace ALL their members because if THEY don't accept them then WHY should anyone else? edited to add: I'm always put off by people who seem to try to "prove" how MANLY Adam is...like OMG he can't be compared to Johnny Weir...Johnny's so ~girly. Adam isn't Alpha or beta...he is OMEGA...he embodies ALL aspects of the male and female gender. he is strong, confident, loving, graceful, nuturing, aggressive, funny, etc. Adam doesn't need to be labeled...he needs to be able to be himself and his community needs to embrace and support him. YES to all, but I don't entirely agree with the remarks about the ladies of forty and fifty.You don't have to be part of a group to be sensitive to that group. Sometimes people outside of any particular group are enlightened and have no baggage.Many of us have felt the sting of bigotry in our lives. Bigotry is bigotry,hate is hate. but do you know how irritating it must be for gay men to be lectured by a 40 or 50 year old straight woman? I shake my head to be the point of it almost falling off my shoulders whenever I see this attitude and I see it a lot on the internet. This writer was lecturing from WITHING the gay community, from a place of knowledge and he is saying they need to accept the Adams and the Johnny's just like the accept the Neils so for someone to take offense to that doesn't make sense to me. I'll also add I get empathy or being sensitive to their plight. I'm a huge advocate for civil rights and equality for EVERYONE, be it gay or any minority. But I do NOT know what it's like to be discriminated against. I'm a middle class white woman for pete sake so I can't pretend to know what it feels like to live in that situation but I can fight with them side by side to ensure that someday they might be able to say they don't know either. |
