First let me say Adam doesn't need a "protective mama" and part of the major problem I see Adam having continually is that attitude by women who are overprotective going off and acting like they know anything about the gay community when in fact they are straight 40-50 something ladies who don't live within that community and don't have a clue how the social structure works. The writer didn't say Adam OR Johnny were freaks. He said they are what many view as the 'stereotypical' gay man, not masculine ENOUGH. Adam wears makeup, Adam wears medges, Adam wears sheer shirts and leather pants. Adam IS androgynous so while he may not be as effeminate as Johnny Weir he isn't as butch as Neil Patrick Harris either. I thought the article was great. He is saying that REGARDLESS of how the public views an Adam or a Johnny, as a community they should embrace ALL their members because if THEY don't accept them then WHY should anyone else? edited to add: I'm always put off by people who seem to try to "prove" how MANLY Adam is...like OMG he can't be compared to Johnny Weir...Johnny's so ~girly. Adam isn't Alpha or beta...he is OMEGA...he embodies ALL aspects of the male and female gender. he is strong, confident, loving, graceful, nuturing, aggressive, funny, etc. Adam doesn't need to be labeled...he needs to be able to be himself and his community needs to embrace and support him. Excellent points and I agree with most of what you said!!

lol bridgeymah loved your third paragraph. OT, I just realized I have never actually worn nail polish in my life, not even as a little girl. ***** scroll warning***** going to leave the topic after this, but because fanoftheman asked why the negative reaction to the word alpha: I think it might be generational, and have to do more with usage and context than a dictionary definition. For example calling Adam strong, charismatic, a leader or whatever, is all good to me. I have not, myself heard the word used as a serious psychological term (unless we are talking the pop psychology of 70's Cosmo or something). I have read it used to imply that 'beta' men with more feminine qualities are weaker and followers rather than leaders. I also have read it again and again as something which feminism is trying to 'destroy'. I think the line of thought goes that feminist man-haters want to emasculate men and destroy their natural place as the dominant leaders of society? A quick google search on the word picks up dating advice on how to be more dominant and therefore sleep with more women ("the alpha male never apologizes" etc.), and random internet comments like these: "The issue with alpha males is that you must make the choice between an alpha male and feminism, you CANNOT have both. For the two are diametrically opposed to each other. Any man who accepts feminism is not an alpha male, and any alpha male will not accept feminism. Anyone who contends this does not understand the nature of an alpha male.
Our modern society, which embraces feminism, is at odds with the alpha male, and men, in general, are discouraged from being what they are hard-wired to be."

This article actually irritated me. I do not put Adam and Johnny Weir into the same category. To me Johnny is more effeminate, and Adam is classic might I say gorgeous, alpha male. He is categorizing them as freaks, because they express themselves a little differently, and are in the entertainment business. He is basically stating that many of the gay males have lives just like you and I. To me that is a given. Hell we (gay, straight, transgender) are all human being with insecurities, families, jobs, stress, happiness, kids, etc. I don't think we do anything differently except in the bedroom. I know Adam says he's a freak. It's okay for him to say it, but protective mamma here don't want others saying it !!!! End of Rant !!!! LOL... I don't think NPH can be considered as butch. NPH looks like heterosexual male, but he is not a butch either. To me butch is macho.. don't see him as it. To me, Tom Select is butch. But when I google butch, urban dictionary use the term mostly for gay female.

So what is the definition of "screaming queen" that some agree with so much? To me, it sounds like an out-of-control whacked-out screeching nutcase. I certainly don't think of Adam in those terms, in fact, quite the opposite. It sounds totally derogatory to me. :-/
