Late-night television is mainly dominated by men. In the company of Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, Carson Daly, and CraigFurguson, Handler stands out simply for being a woman. Handler is the only female talk show host competing in the major late-night talk show market.

The fact that Handler is the lone female late-night talk show is reflected in her key demographic. Chelsea Lately’s strongest audience is women between 18-34. In this demographic, Handler pulls in more viewers than Kimmel, Ferguson or Daly.

While Chelsea Lately’s audience is nowhere near that of NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, (3.97 million in May 2010) Handler’s audience is very specific which is a valuable thing to advertisers. (Of course, comparing the viewership of Chelsea Lately to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is like comparing apples and oranges because they are broadcast in completely different markets towards completely different audiences.)
