Newsday Review of Trespassing
Adam Lambert's 'Trespassing'
Newsday Published: May 14, 2012 1:50 PM
By GLENN GAMBOA glenn.gamboa@newsday.com
Adam Lambert has learned an important lesson -- you can't please all the people all the time.
Unlike his debut, tellingly titled "For Your Entertainment," Lambert's new album, "Trespassing," (RCA) sounds strictly for himself -- a well-crafted collision of electronic dance pop and upper-register, booming vocals mostly about pushing the envelope and enjoying life.
For much of "Trespassing," Lambert draws inspiration from Michael Jackson and Queen's Freddie Mercury that encourages him to sound bigger and bolder than ever. Subtlety be damned.
The title track, written by Lambert and Pharrell Williams, is a bit "Another One Bites the Dust" on the verses and sorta "Hollaback Girl" on the chorus, but the way Lambert whirls it all together, it sounds completely his. The same goes for "Shady," which has elements of Jackson and Christina Aguilera in both delivery and musical arrangement, but is undeniably Lambert.
"Trespassing" does have its serious moments, including the touching ballad "Outlaws of Love," which seems to defend same-sex marriage, as Lambert wraps his voice around the lines "They say we'll rot in hell, but I don't think we will. They've branded us enough -- outlaws of love." The way Lambert twists it into Radiohead-styled prog-rock -- and back again through his phrasing -- is a great trick. However, "Runnin' " HeWhoCannot ameds it, taking a standard pop song and arranging it into a thrilling, dramatic dance anthem.
"Trespassing" shows that Lambert is too good to waste time trying to please the pop masses. They'll catch up eventually.

AfterElton Review of Trespassing
Review: Adam Lambert's "Trespassing" Is Manna From Glitter Heaven
Posted by snicks on May 14, 2012
Fans of Adam Lambert, the time has come! After scheduled and then ... rescheduled release dates, his much-anticipated sophomore album Trespassing will officially and finally be released on Tuesday, May 15th.
Was it worth the wait? Adam fans will not be disappointed. You can stream the entire album here, and below you can see which songs worked, and which could've been left off.
Note - Songs will be rated on a scale of one to five Fierce Adam Eyes.
1. TRESPASSING 5 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"No trespassing? Yeah, my ass! Wait till ya get a load of me!" Adam wisely places this funky foot stomper first, and declares from the outset that he's not going to conform to expectations. This ode to individuality is filled with sass, and the beat and in-your-face attitude are reminiscent of the Queen classic "Another One Bites The Dust."
Best Lyric: "I ain't got BS in my bag, that's the one thing you can believe."
2. CUCKOO 4 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"Walk that walk like you don't give a f*ck." One of the most high-energy, beat-driven songs on the album, there's no way you can't flash back to the 80's while listening, thankfully.
Best Lyric: "I'm swinging off of my hinges, I'm cocked and I'm ready to go"
3. SHADY 4 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"No I ain't broken, but I, I need a fix." With a bass so dirty it deserves a tongue bath, Adam declares that hunting season is open ... but it ain't a rabbit hole he's looking for.
Best Lyric: "Take me, take me down, where freaks like us can meet."
4. NEVER CLOSE OUR EYES 2 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"There's plenty of time to sleep when we die." I'm still trying to figure out why one of the weakest songs on the album was chosen as one of the first singles. Originally a Bruno Mars demo, it has the distinction of being both overproduced ... and undercooked.
Best Lyric: "N/A"
5. KICKIN' IN 5 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"He got words that rhyme, he got a dirty mind." In fact, this track harkens back to the Prince classic "Dirty Mind." It's also one of the most irresistible songs on the album, with its story of ... liquid euphoria.
Best Lyric: "She puts the shot glass down, she asks for another round. She wants to hit the clouds, honey are you up there now?"
6. NAKED LOVE 4 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"I want your naked love, so dontcha dress it up tonight." Straightforward pop gem that wisely eschews production flourishes and just gives us Adam ... wanting to know you better.
Best Lyric: "Take it off and try me on, the hottest threads you ever wore."
7. POP THAT LOCK 3 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"If you got the key, then baby pop that lock" Standard dance track that will earn its place in concert when throngs of Glamberts chant in unison, "Werk Bitch!"
Best Lyric: "Werk bitch, you don't gotta stress."
8. BETTER THAN I KNOW MYSELF 5 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"I can be obnoxious at times, but try and see my heart." Released as the first single, it had a disappointing chart result, and has polarized fans. I love the song, and will continue to defend it. Like "Naked Love," it's a perfect showcase for the plaintive Adam, and makes tremendous use of his vocal range.
Best Lyric: "You're the only thing in this world I would die without."
9. BROKEN ENGLISH 4 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"Now your body language is broken English." Gloriously bombastic ballad that has producers reaching into their trick bags for electronic eccentricities. It somehow comes together.
Best Lyric: "Tower Of Babel has fallen down again."
10. UNDERNEATH 5 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"Strip away the flesh and the bone" The best song on the album. Adam bares it all ... his heart ... his soul ... and his passion. It's impossible not be moved when he begs "Look at me!"
Best Lyric: "You're gonna see things you might not wanna see."
11. CHOKEHOLD 3 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"I want your chokehold" Atmospheric but standard ballad about a strained and smothering relationship. Not a bad song, but one of the lesser entries on the album.
Best Lyric: "Baby I can smell you on my clothes."
12. OUTLAWS OF LOVE 5 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"They've branded us outlaws of love." If it's not the best song on the album, it's certainly the most important. Quieter Adam is always goosebump-inducing, and this plea for equality is heartbreaking in its sincerity.
Best Lyric: "Tears all fall the same"
13. RUNNIN' 3 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"I've been standing here my whole life. Everything I've seen twice." Like "Chokehold," it's a serviceable power ballad, but suffers in comparison to the rest of the album.
Best Lyric: "Addicted to the numb livin' in the cold."
14. TAKE BACK 4 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"How do we take back what's been done, what's been said?" An urgent lament about a failing relationship, it's taken to a new level by Adam's strong vocal plea.
Best Lyric: "All I ever do is over think and drink until I attack."
15. NIRVANA 4 of 5 Fierce Adam Eyes
"We can escape to a higher plane" The album ends on a strong note, with this dreamy ballad. Adam wisely chose to finish with a song about hope and finding a place in the world. It's bittersweet and affecting.
Best Lyric: "We don't need any diamonds or gold. Watch the mystic and cryptic unfold."
Okay, Glamberts! It's your turn. What are your favorite (and least favorite) songs?

4) Never Close Our Eyes: Adams vocals really shine here. He sings this in an almost Savage Garden Darrin Hayes way, weaving flawlessly between the raspy low end of the verses into the sustained higher notes on the choruses. Great tune with another huge dance style beat.
BonersandBitches
What can I say about Never Close Our Eyes that hasn’t already said? Most people have heard this song already because it was announced as the second single, and rightfully so. It has a wonderful dance beat, great lyrics and Adam’s vocals really shine through on this track. This one is definitely one of my top favorites.
Entertainment Focus
and mashes rock with electro-pop on current US single (and UK lead single) Never Close Our Eyes which was penned by Bruno Mars.
EQ Music Blog
Never Close Our Eyes – Funny story about this track. Well…not really. Anyway, when we heard some tracks back in January, we heard this one but we weren’t allowed to talk about it because it wasn’t finished yet. I can’t express to you how difficult this was for me, as this is one of my favorite songs on the album. To me, this is a perfect dance pop song: it’s got great lyrics, great structure, an amazing chorus and Adam’s vocals really, really shine on it. There seems to be a theme of unapologetic love on this album, and it really continues with this track and it fits quite nicely.
JustLikeJerry
Highlights are "Trespassing," an infectious, no-brainer that does cheerleading pop much better than "Give Me All Your Lovin'" by Maddy, funky-silly "Cuckoo," current single "Never Close Your Eyes," and the Prince-like "Shady."
Popmessiah
The second (and current) single “Never Close Our Eyes” is up next. This track throbs with energy and emotion. It’s by some accounts a beautiful love song but otherwise applicable to simply living life to the fullest. Penned by Bruno Mars, Adam’s voice is tender and/or powerful when and where it needs to be. Having heard the other songs on the album, I do question this now as the second single choice but it does seem to be getting great buzz thus far and hopefully will be a hit and put this album on the map. Those harmonies and that soaring note on the chorus, though. Goosebumps!

12. “Never Close Our Eyes”
“Never Close Our Eyes” has been out for a while; it’s the second Trespassing single. It’s also one of two tracks on Trespassing Adam had no credited involvement in. The other track is the other single, “Better Than I Know Myself,” and you’ve got to wonder why; when Lambert’s name slips off the credits, the quality slips as well.
Here’s who is involved in “Never Close Our Eyes.” The track was originally Bruno Mars demo, which makes a lot of sense–every other pop song’s got a carpe diem (and/or noctem) message, but who else in pop would be so literally morbid about it and write “there’s plenty of time to sleep when we die” or “none of us are promised to see tomorrow?”? (Lana Del Rey doesn’t count. Neither do the writers of “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.”) You almost wonder whether Bruno originally meant this as a slower, statelier ballad, something like “It Will Rain,” which would make a lot of sense. But that’s a moot question, because Dr. Luke and Cirkut got hold of it, and neither seems to know what to do. The prechorus, in particular, sounds like nobody could decide whether it called for a dubstep breakdown, spot of synth claps or Travie McCoy interjecting with his acoustic guitar. Adam does his best with what he’s given, growling and stressing and gospel-belting his way through lines too cliched for him. The problem’s not him, it’s the material–which is particularly baffling, considering there are at least five better singles on this thing. One of them is [the track] right after this.
Popledge
Never Close Our Eyes – don’t get me wrong, this is still a good track but to me the record label have got all the single releases from Trespassing wrong. There are more exciting and progressive tracks on the album then this. However, I like the structure of this song, the way it builds up to the chorus is a testament to the skilled production on this album.
Softpedia
Strangely though, “Never Close Our Eyes” makes a discordant note with the rest of the album, prompting many to say it would have been a better fit on “FYE.”
Under the Gun
“Never Close Our Eyes” comes from a more thoughtful place, but dresses itself in such stylised, gaudy disco beats that you’d hardly notice. Bruno Mars was involved in putting this together, and such is evident in the soulful, considered vocal line, which adds an earthy gravitas to the biting rhythms of the chorus.
Yahoo
The house-music epic "Never Close Our Eyes" (co-written by two other Midas-Touched hitmakers, Bruno Mars and Dr. Luke) probably has David Guetta cancelling all future recording sessions with the proposed guest allstars for his next album, and deciding to hire Adam to sing on every track instead.

Adam Lambert’s ‘Trespassing’
Source: David Atlanta Magazine May 13, 2012 | by Elijah Sarkesian
Debut albums from American Idol alums are notoriously rushed efforts. Even the best of these albums fail to show the full potential of the artists recording them. More than with most artists, the second album is usually key in determining where the artist will go in the future.
That’s the place Adam Lambert is at right now. His debut, 2009’s For Your Entertainment, was a surprisingly strong collection of songs with a wide range of input from artists and producers like Lady Gaga, P!nk, Linda Perry, Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The result was a sometimes thrilling, sometimes maddening album that showed a lot of potential, but also felt a tad too schizophrenic at points.
With his sophomore effort, Trespassing, Lambert establishes a more solid musical personality: the wild child of the Idol bunch. Trespassing is an arresting collection of fierce, funky dance tracks and deep, pensive ballads. Rather than mix the two styles, the album splits the two into separate halves.
The first seven tracks serving as a non-stop barrage of sassy fun over dubstep-influenced pop. The tracks take on different styles. The title track and “Kickin’ In” both come from Pharrell, and include his signature production style. There’s more attitude on these two tracks alone than you’ll find on an entire Katy Perry album. “Shady,” meanwhile, pairs Adam with Sam Sparro and Nile Rodgers (of Chic fame), and is probably the single coolest song Adam’s recorded to date.
Another pair of songs on the front half of the album are just begging for single release. The first, “Cuckoo,” is a dance song with an immediately catchy chorus. The second, “Naked Love,” is a slightly more laidback song that sounds like a Bruno Mars track with a dance beat. It’s a good thing.
The five tracks that make up the back end of the standard edition are, by comparison, a lot slower. The second half opens with lead single “Better Than I Know Myself,” which works surprisingly well at transitioning the album. It’s the closest Adam comes to replicating his biggest hit, “Whataya Want from Me.” It also starts a theme covered in the back half of the album about troubled relationships. “Broken English” tackles problems with communicating, while “Chokehold” describes the thrill of a toxic relationship.
The highlight of the album is its closer, “Outlaws of Love.” While For Your Entertainment didn’t exactly avoid Adam’s sexuality (with “Fever” being the most prominent example), Trespassing is a bit more explicit in its subject matter, and “Outlaws of Love” is the most haunting example of songs performed from an LGBT perspective. It’s all about the longing for acceptance, a topic that should resonate with many of the album’s listeners.
Trespassing is one of the stronger, more consistent mainstream pop albums to come out in the past year, and with the right push from RCA Records, it could be a big hit. My one complaint? The singles released so far, while good, do not do this album justice. Releasing “Cuckoo” would be a step in the right direction.

Get ready to be reintroduced to Adam Lambert
Source: Idol Chatter posted by Mark Franklin on May 14, 2012 in Adam Lambert, New Idol Music
The guy who stole the show on American Idol Season 8, yet somehow wound up finishing second, returns with his second album this week.
Adam Lambert releases “Trespassing” Tuesday, and get ready for one of the more audacious albums you’ve heard from a former Idol contestant.
Bet you’re surprised, right?
But based on a story on Billboard.com, Adam fully realizes that importance of this album. He’s seen what’s happened to many a male Idol who went before him.
He told Billboard that’s why he insisted on being executive producer of his second album, and on co-writing much of it.
“This is a big make-or-break thing for me, especially for someone who comes off of ‘Idol,’” he told Billboard. “I did have a hit, which was great. That was one big step. Now what? Is that going to be it? Am I a one-hit wonder? So I wanted to get really involved in the process to make sure I was doing everything I could to create a great album.”
Did he succeed?
You don’t need to wait until Tuesday to find out. You can listen to the entire album — include the deluxe edition bonus tracks — here. (link removed)
Meanwhile, Adam is going to be all over the place this week promoting the album.
Monday morning, he’ll sing his latest single, “Never Close Our Eyes,” on Good Morning America. Also set for Monday, an appearance on VH1′s Big Morning Buzz at 10 a.m., a live Q&A at Billboard.com at 3 p.m. and a 6:30 p.m. concert at the MLB Fan Cave in New York.
Then, Thursday, he’ll perform the new single on American Idol during the Top 3 results show.
Ah, about Idol … asked to pick a favorite, most guest artist mutter some politically correct mumbo jumbo about how all the remaining singers are great.
Adam? Forget it.
He felt the need to chime in after the top four show.
“#JSanchezAI11 (Jessica’s twitter handle) is a star,” Adam tweeted. “#JLedetAI11 (Joshua’s twitter handle) sangs fo the blood. They wipe the floor with the other two. It’s a singing competition.”
Later, in a message to Jessica, he clarified: “I said I liked you best. Phillip and Hollie are terrific singers. I just think you kick their butts.”
And, still later, “My opinions aren’t always diplomatic.”
Yep, time for a re-introduction. But it’s the same old Adam.
Now, “Never Close Your Eyes”

New on Adamtopia
New SKINS!!
To celebrate Trespassing, I have added 3 new Trespassing themed skins that you can choose. One is for the light side – called Trespassing 3 – it is mostly light colors. And two are for the dark side – called Trespassing and Trespassing 2.
I also temporarily changed the background on the default Adamtopia color scheme. You can change your skin in your Profile, select Modify Profile and scroll down to Select Skin.
Is the type too small or large on ATop?
The size of the type you see on ATop is controlled by your browser setting. If it is too large or two small, you can change the settings in your browser. For Firefox it is located in TOOLS, OPTIONS, CONTENT. There is a default font setting and size. In Chrome is is located at chrome://settings/fonts. In Safari, go to Preferences-Advanced tab for font size options. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options. More detailed instructions: www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000779.htm
Quick Links
There is a dropdown at the top or the page that will take you to some of the most popular places on Adamtopia.
Now Profile Options
You can now set your profile to customize you posting defaults.
You can select one of 28 font styles.
You can select any of the 16 basic colors or any custom color with by entering your own 6 digit HEX code. (Here is an HTML HEX code color reference: www.pagetutor.com/common/bgcolors1536.html )
And you can change your default font size – not recommended – the board default is set at 3.
To customize your posting default, click on Profile in the header. Click on Modify Profile and scroll down to these dropdowns:
New Posting Menu Options
On the posting menu there are 6 new options.
1. Color wheel lets posters pick any Web color for posts. The standard color "words" still work. Keep in mind that some colors are hard to read.
2. Soundcloud files can be embedded by using the orange Soundscan icon in the second row of the toolbar.
Example: [ soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/adamofficial/trespassing[/ soundcloud] =
[soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/adamofficial/trespassing[/soundcloud]
3. I added the a Spoiler code button. This allows posters to create a mess that opens up or has an answer that shows when you clip on it. (Not supported by Chrome.)
Example:
[ spoiler=Click on this for an example of a Spoiler]The answer pops up when you click on it!! [/ spoiler] =
The answer pops up when you click on it!!
4. I added a command to embed a Photobucket slide show -- it is a small blue icon.
5. There is a dropdown to embed non-YouTube video formats including Vimeo videos. (Not supported by Chrome.)
6. There is a dropdown to format with 28 specialty fonts. Some are unusual and should be reserved for appropriate occasions.
SOME OF THESE WILL NOT WORK WITH CHROME OR OPERA BROWSERS. IT IS A BROWSER DESIGN CHOICE AND NOT A FORUM ISSUE.
