allegory, I appreciate your post. I hope you will bring your thoughts about radio and anything else "dark side" over to the Dark Satellite of Love so we can read them.
irish1139, I just can't get my head around this radio thing! One of the reasons I joined Atop was that certain people seemed to know things. I've realized that they don't know any more than the rest of us bozos.
I have heard (don't know if it's true) that Clear Channel is biased against playing the music of gay males. Clear Channel is the largest owner of radio stations in the country. They own 850 stations. I dunno, but it scares me.
Adam will do OK and be able to make records and tour without radio, I think, but without big sales he won't get big recognition like the Grammys. He'll just be beating his head against the wall. That makes me sick.

And now for my dark side personal rant: IMO, Adam is not getting a fair shake. He just isn't. #1 Album, critical acclaim for album and vids, TONS of targeted fan support, works his ass off, spectacular interviewee, etc etc etc. And yet all those positives just don't make more than a minor, disproportionally small, dent in the Numbers. I, for one, was expecting a shit-load more adds. From a lot more stations. Is 16 horrible? No. But is sure isn't good either. Not for the amount of promo and (face it) radio bribes paid. Not for the quantity of DJ and critical kudos. Is it the GEY ??!!??!! ??? ??? ??? ??? I dunno. But let me tell you what *I* heard on the radio this morning. Was listening to DC101 -> the "Elliot in the Morning" show. They played the YouTube of a 3-year old singing “Ain't No Homos Gonna Go to Heaven” with the entire church whooping and praising the boy as he sang. Pulled this excerpt off some radio's site (grabbed the first google hit, but forget to mark which one): [/ul] Adam CANNOT win a huge number of people over. People who listen to radio stations who rely on advertising. And, in my secret heart-of-hearts, I can't but believe that THAT kind of closed-minded hatred doesn't affect PDs who determine what gets played on their stations. Hits. Big hits. They get played on LOTS of stations. You.cannot.get.a.big.hit.without.being.played.on.lots.of.stations...... And I just don't know if that's going to happen. Can Adam survive if he doesn't have a big hit? Sure. His fanbase is solid. BUT.IT.ISN'T.FAIR............
THANK YOU, HOPPERS. THIS IS A VERY DARK THING.
I almost had to laugh at this. A church pastor getting death threats. How many gays and lesbians have been getting death threats for years. I remember during the late 60's in Ithaca NY black students took over their student union with guns. I still remember the picture of this big, tall good looking black man (after it was all over) coming out of the building with a gun over his shoulder, and I realized never again will anyone be able to enslave the black man in this country. When a group wants their freedom, they have to take it. Sometimes it may involve threats. I know in my heart change is coming for the LGBT community. I hope it doesn't come to horrible events. I know if events had been different for African-Americans in the 60's we wouldn't have had a peaceful transition. And there were riots, but it could have gotten a lot worse. I just hope the religious community doesn't retaliate when laws change for the LGBT folks. The religious "nuts" scare the hell out of me. I know this makes no sense. I am just rambling along, trying to simplify a very complex problem. (It seems so simple to me, but apparently other people in this country think a lot different than I do.) I just don't understand bible people, I guess. Or anyone that doesn't think like I do. That is my biggest flaw among many others.

THANK YOU, JUNIEMOON, for the invitation. I feel so honored to be invited and haven't been this energized at ATOP in a long time. The posters on this thread are like kindred spirits to me. I have always wanted a thread like this because it is YOU that keeps me coming back to ATOP despite years of wondering why. Deep end is my place--strange and somber--poetry, politics, mysticism, passion, community, humanity, stillness, wonder. This suits me. This is my place of comfort amongst friends.
I'm typing this on my way back from chaperoning my daughter's 8th grade trip to DC--waves at Hoppers--on a crowded tour bus, through a torrential downpour, listening to "Rainy Day People" with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face.
You are the beautiful people.

Also-- this thread is kind of like the buried MJsBlog threads that we lived in for days on end. Sometimes secrets are fun.

Hey guys, I just want to thank you all for all the kind encouragement! It definately brings my spirits up and takes some of the fear away that I feel creeping up inside as I approach another 3 days of work, starting tomorrow. I'm going to study a bit tonight and then go to bed. 3AM comes pretty early. Mika, thank you so much for the beautiful flower. I really need to say something here and I don't want it to be taken wrong or to offend anyone. And, I am not talking about any one person at all. This are just my own personal feelings. I really love this thread, but in no way am I here to discuss or put down our Admin or our mods. They have a very tough job and work very hard. And, they don't get paid. I'm not saying that to stop anyone else from expressing what they want to. I just want to be clear on what my intentions are. Please, don't anyone take this personally, because that is not what I mean. I am just speaking for myself and I am NOT in the least scolding anyone for what has been said before me. Everyone has the right to express their feelings and thoughts. I hope I explained this well enough. ((Hugs))

This dark thread was created as an outlet, but it is still part of ATOP. Its "secrecy" is nothing more than a fun farce. The gateway is easy to find for anyone who desires to look for it, and its quiet darkness makes it easier to discuss certain topics which are somewhat counter to the frentic pace going on lately in the main threads.

I'm sorry. I cannot be here if we criticize individuals. If you have a problem with a mod or the admin take it up with them.
Personal attacks are too dark for me.
I will not be visiting here again. It was nice for a while, though.

The dark side is not for everyone. Sometimes you're gonna see things you might not wanna see. My feeling is that I have seen criticism of policies, decisions, and actions. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. And how many times have we been told that discussing Atop itself is off topic?? I think it is only natural to want to discuss it here, especially in the early days of this thread as we adjust to the idea of trying to make it work. If I saw anyone impugning someone's character, or insulting them, I would speak up, regardless of how I felt about their position or actions. All of the posts I've seen here were intelligent, honest, and reasonable. JMO. I do think our mods are amazing, and they do all this for free. We survive by their forbearance, too. To continue kay's metaphor -- the last thing we need here is a police raid.
