I thought this thread was started as a "safe" place where all opinions were welcome. A place where people could express doubts and talk honestly about radio, numbers, etc. without being accused of being "angsty" and bringing down the spirits of people in the main posts. That's why I thought it was named "the Dark Side;" we don't have to be all glittery and sunny here. I hope that aspect of this thread doesn't change. People already seem to be afraid to post in the Numbers thread for fear of being too negative. I hope this thread remains open to all opinions. eta---you don't have to post "deep thoughts" here. I thought this thread was for the same types of comments you mentioned, but without the specific analyzing of sales numbers or charts. Some topics that get discussed in the number's thread, like the problems with Pop radio in general or negativity about other artists, might be pushing the boundaries of that particular section of Atop. This was Q3's definition of the dark thread the day she set it up: I guess that means all things dark, doubting or of a negative nature belong in this thread.

mika, you said it all, beautifully.
jamie, that is how I feel. Basically I feel that thanks to mika, a number of people saw this thread as a refuge instead of a banishment. It is not exclusionary of people who don't want to post poetry or silly deep thoughts; instead, it was inclusionary of those who did, who were no longer welcome anywhere else on this board.
The main thread is fast-paced and aggressive; no place for people whose brains and keyboards don't work at the speed of several new posts every minute. mwp, I know you're gone now to London, but I agree with what you said about that slightly sick feeling about hitting "Post Reply." I haven't had that feeling here ... until today.
readon, I gather that generating our own fun is somewhat frowned upon these days; the main thread is serious business now. That makes these alternative threads more important.
All I ever hoped for was a place where freaks could meet and just ramble on without judgement.
nica, there are no rules, officially, for the thread, and no definition. It is just a derelict thread from a month ago that we've been using. I agree with others and have said as much that there is overlap between those who want to post in depth about the industry and those who want to post here. Many people may frequent both threads, if they are created. Neither is wrong or bad.
My feeling, and I may be wrong, is that there are lots of places to talk about the music industry and Adam. Sometimes it seems that is all Atop talks about (well, and pants, and what a nice guy Brian May is). But there is no place else in the fandom for silly freaks to post their dreams and visions and yes their angst, and for that reason I hope this thread can somehow be tolerated and allowed to live, and not just drowned out and made like everyplace else.

Ok, maybe I should be the last person to respond to this "issue" of the dark side but I really love this thread so much and hate that it is even suggested that things have turned for the worse. I personally was feeling excited by the new posters and the variety of posts in the last few days. I am curious is this "wrong direction" thing a concern many were having?
IMHO the theme for this tread is IT IS OK TO SAY IT HERE. Of course, all the ATop rules apply here but the one that I think is the theme of this thread is DO NOT QUESTION ANYONE'S RIGHT TO POST.
This is where you post what is shunned above. We accept dark, angsty posts about numbers, radio, KA, things that people have bottled up inside but are afraid to post above for fear of being told it is wrong, unjustified, or a dead topic (even if, for you it lives on), whatever. But, we also accept light, non-news posts that are not considered news enough for the news thread, especially now that there's even a ban there on posting of old Adam videos as a means of reminiscing. We are not all poets or philosophizers so any tone you take is welcome here. I always viewed it as a place of tranquility built on mutual acceptance--not mutual oneness.
I personally am shocked that the direction of people's posts have been questioned here. First we were told our posts didn't fit in up there, now they don't fit in here? Maybe we need to divide into more threads? Get mod approval of appropriateness? Deja vu, anyone?
I think it is time for me to go re-listen to the song, Trespassing, and watch the two new music videos. Such life lessons he gives us, I tell ya!
Again, IMHO.

Looking back over the last week of posts, I see negativity and discussion on all sorts of subjects- starting on June 11th with negative comments being directed at Adam’s brother and Adam's ex-boyfriend. On June 12th the discussion jumped to angst over radio support and negativity over NCOE to June 13th where the day was started out with some “subtle” complaints about the main thread, then back to the angst about radio play which turned into sharing frustrations over the never ending requesting demands. Then it turned to discussions of why Fever and Shady weren’t considered to be singles and that prompted the listing of favorite and least favorite songs, including various negative opinions on the debut single and current single off of TSP.
The general music discussion continued on the 15th as artists were labeled as “widget salesmen” and there was a question of ways to get Adam’s music in front of new fans. Next the discussions went to the new songs by Fun and Gotye, Adele, WWFM, the AMAs, the next single, radio’s possible burn-out of Idols in general, MJs, Bieber, demographics of CHR listeners, demographics of those who listen to Bieber and 1D, and the Pop music listening habits of posters in the thread. Then there was a discussion on how the one-offs are selling so far this era. Last was the negativity over what kind of negativity was allowed in the thread. LOL
So, looking back at the last week- it looks as if there have been topics from all over the place and negativity about just about everything.

I am finally checking the threads at the end of the day, so late to the discussions here, but I can relate to MWP's feeling of that moment after you hit post... For me, since this thread started, it has been a place to be able to just ramble a bit, one that is kind of loose and fluid, where I don't have to worry about being too lengthy, or about staying on topic, or about being too dark or not dark enough.
It has been a place where I can pull up a chair and settle in for some good conversation with friends.
(I really like the musings of the people who post here.)
That's not very dark, I know.

Mika....I love your definition of the thread. I think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head. You have a great way with words and I always enjoy your posts even if I don't completely agree with everything you write...we are both on the same page, in the same camp......on the same side...all those trite-nesses. I admire your strength and the love you share with your family. Anything we can do...we're here.

[waves and sends kisses to all of you]
This is an exemplary delurking - long live this thread to all of us! Post away, please! ( although the chickenshit that I am, I did delete my one and only post - it was too personal, imo)
I have a question : do Adam the man and Adam's music stand in perfect equilibrium in your hearts? Would you love him still if Trespassing sucked because it's not just about the music anymore? Or, how DEEP is exactly his impact on your life ( retracing Momtomany's essay here)? [ anything from 'He's changed my life's perspective' to 'I've started watching gay porn' goes]
Both are true for me, by the way.
I did feel the relief of cosmic proportions upon hearing Trespassing - it is so bloody fabulous, but I think I'm on the path of being a 'no-matter-what', or 'forever' kind of fan. Although nowadays ' forever' turns out to be not that long, sometimes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ NCOE is my least favourite song on Trespassing and I think the video mainly sucks ( except for Adam's absolute gorgeousness) .Last night, while flipping through channels, I bumped into NCOE playing on MTV Serbia. The first moment of exaltation [ 'yay, Adam on my TV' kind of thing] was instantly swiped away by the ridiculousness of the 'scrubbing the concrete' bit - wtf?!?!? I laughed my ass off.
~ I support SHADY being the next single - I really think Adam should have the same attitude with the third single as with the whole album here - if it should be his make or break single, let it all be his gorgeous, fabulous self - which Shady is.
~ I LOVElovelove Take Back.
~ Nationalglampoon likes Beiber - how can anyone feel hesitant to post with this boy with the cojones the size of Serbia's national debt here? I love you, kiddo!
~ Fuck the radio/spins/adds. Wake me up when they start getting good.
~ Long live this thread!! ( Did I mention that?)
~ Although a huge Anglophile ( someone brought up Room With a View, bless them!) , my literary recommendation would be anything by Haruki Murakami ( Norwegian Wood, Dance Dance Dance, South of the Border, West of the Sun...Kafka on the Shore...) Brilliant.
~ I want ALL of you posting here to know that you have at least one very fervent reader.

I am probably posting in this thread too much. I care so much about it ... ALFC was always my home. As everyone knows, that place never took off, it was a small type place with only a couple of dozen active members. Somehow we bonded. When it started circling the drain, I started coming here sometimes, then more and more. It has always been an uneasy fit, but basically at this point, I will not have an Adam home on the web if it doesn't work out. [slight pause while everyone says "who cares?" about juniemoon's pathetic need to be understood] I thought a lot about this over breakfast and you know ... there has been a major cultural shift here at Adamtopia over the last several weeks. I don't think the changes are arbitrary, at all; I suspect there is a very interesting reason behind them that I hope we all find out some day perhaps really soon. I wonder if we will see Adamtopia become more of a classic forum rather the "one big tent" we had before. The "daily" thread is clearly news only now. Personal news goes in members ... numbers news goes in numbers ... pictures and gifs go in their own forums. There are threads for Adam's songs and threads for Adam's music from a technical standpoint and threads for Adam's concerts. "Re: 5.22.2012" has become a lifeboat with more and more members climbing on as refugees from other threads as those threads become more strictly defined. It clearly fills a need a lot of people have, more people all the time. Reading the responses from yesterday and last night, I see three desires that could, perhaps, enlarge Adamtopia by three threads, if indeed the idea is to become more "forum-y." - The Music Industry (in depth wide-ranging talk about the business and Adam's place in it) - Philosophical Society - Let's Rant (a place to vent about the bullshit - original Dark Side concept as Q3 set it forth) I might be all wet, but I would like and post in all three threads and I think a lot of other people would too. They would work presuming that honesty was allowed in all three. (Much of what is being called negativity seems to me to be honesty.) My idea is that three lifeboats at this point may be better than one but I dunno and it certainly is not up to me. Until something like that happens I certainly will do my part to help us all muddle along in the same lifeboat.

I vote for a "Let's rant" thread. ;D (no literary quotations or philosophical musings required)
This particular thread has become quite intimidating....I've been a member of this forum and its predecessors since the Planet Fierce days and appreciate cerebral musings....but DAYUM people!....mika - say WUT?!
Glad some peeps have found a sanctuary, but this one isn't for me.
