I really wish the gay community can challenge the status quo by asking why there are no gay artists on the radio and why only straight artists are gifted with the gift of having songs good enough for radio.
Someone needs to start exposing the dirty biz called radio, so changes might eventually
come.
Do bisexuals count? Are they in the gay community?
There was a gay artist on the radio two years ago with a couple of songs- WWFM and IIHY!
I have stated what I feel the problem is and supported it with my own analysis of the situation so many times which you don't seem to agree with.
Honestly speaking, you and I would never agree on this topic and I generally don't agree with your views about radio anyway. So let us just agree to disagree, ok?
To indulge in this discussion just a little since you asked me certain questions. Well I do not think bisexual counts since everyone from Katy, Kesha and Gaga are straight girls and have said so themselves that they have never fallen in love with someone of the same sex. And these are the so called bisexuals on the radio.
The only person that remotedly counts is Jessie J who happens to be a lady. The type of gay the male radio lords shit in their pants for and are seen not to be theatening. Wasn't a famale/female kiss shown and cheered on national tv while the m/m one caused so many ripples?
Hmm.... Adam himself spoke about double standards, his lyrics speak about this, he has spoken about it in some of his recent interviews ie Rolling Stone, his recent musical video is political. There is a saying that goes: he who wears the shoes knows where it pinches most. He is in the game and the one it affects most and so he should therefore know more about it. His many hints therefore suggest he thinks the 'gay' is a big factor.
Lastly, it is true he got two of his singles on the radio. There is no way the radio lords wouldn't know he would be coming with another album and would want to get singles on the radio to sell his album. And his album was buzzed about and was on many anticipated album lists. He was not just writing in total seclusion like some fans are making it sound. He also did a few tv appearances here and there etc. Not a typical Idol anything in my opinion.
Therefore radio spinning WWFM & IIHY might be their way of laying a perception down that it is not about the gay and I feel that trick is already working on some people ( I acknowledge everyone has a right to believe what they want). To me, it is part of the game. They knew they wouldn't want him an established radio star as this is the most crucial for his career as a pop artist. Adam himself said this is a career make or break for him. They ie radio lords have therefore laid down the game plan to toy with people perception as far as the first era.
Also, I do not support the theory that because it is being spun in smaller southern markets, it totally means radio isn't conservative & homophobic. Fact is the bigger markets make the hits.
Ask those who follow radio, the smaller look up to the bigger ones and would eventually run out of steam supporting a said song not spun by the bigger stations. Some of them might even add it, but would put the song on a cautious lower rotation until a bigger station spinning it gives them the clue they can support the song aftera. 1 spin per day on Southern stations don't a hit make. If that were not so, all his singles would have flown on the charts and become huge, don't you think? This to me is also part of the radio game. The bigger stations just have the last card in radio equations.
Lest I forgot, I don't believe in all those idol reasons given by some fans as excuses. Adam is not the typical Idol. Show me another idol with a sophomore release that got A class media support, critically acclaimed, debuted at No.1, produced perfect pop radio songs like almost all the critics raved about, did concerts for radio and went on a month's radio tour, retained close to half of his post Idol sales even without radio support nor had he the same type of publicity of being on tv non- stop before the release like he had during his debut. No, this does not seem typical idol trajectory to me.
And all these ratings stuff, I do not also believe in as newer artists who are totally obscure get added everyday and radio makes them popular. Follow the social stats of some of the artists charting, they are not close to that of Adam's, don't increase as much as his nor do many of them sell as many albums as he does despite their radio play, so what do they use to measure this then? Oops I forgot a lot of them can't sell concert tickets too.
And tigerlilly, I would like you to point me to that estaished openly gay male star currently on the radio that wasn't already established before identifying as gay.
Stefano finished from idol over a year ago. Finished 8 or so on the competition and therefore not popular. His song hasn't sold better than Adam's neither does hé have the buzz, yet hé gets adds. This just negates all the radio is fatigued with AI grads in my opinion.
