I agree with you and I think you're right about Adele. If I had time I guess I could research how much the #2 albums sold.
Maybe these articles should give him kudos for having a #1 album with NO RADIO SUPPORT.You know what, in the record books there will be o asterisks that say *2nd lowest #1 this year (which may be false by the time the actual numbers come out.) Someone mentioned the other day, here I think, that no one says Years later), "Oh, but they only the won the Super Bowl by one point!" A win is a win! The record is there and history has been made! I am not going to let any "qualifiers" ruin this amazing achievement! You're absolutely right, but I keep thinking of the ammunition this gives to the haters. I'll try not to let it harsh my mellow, though! Adam is #1 and no one can take that away from him!

Think about it. A WIN IS A WIN.

I realize Billboard is an industry magazine and just being factual in reporting Adam's numbers. The number of records sold these days is so low in general compared to the old days.
Some other outlets have picked it up and yes in the case of some I think they have a motive for wanting to diminish Adam's achievement, to take something special and make it seem small and ordinary.
I love that Adam got #1, but Adam's story is not found in statistics. Adam is not only a great singer and performer, he is a great person, willing to endure personal sacrifices and face extraordinary scrutiny in the face of homophobia and judgment. Every time his name and face appear he faces all kinds of name-calling. He faces a climate where some listeners consider a gay person singing a song to be a political statement and some radio stations are cowardly about facing their ire.
This #1 is very important because Adam is building his career and life with his voice, his brain, and his reputation, all while fighting injustice and the fact that some in the industry hold his sexuality against him and do not want him to succeed.

artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/23/adam-lambert-tops-the-billboard-chart/?src=tpAdam Lambert Tops the Billboard Chart By BEN SISARIO Adam Lambert has a mixed victory on the Billboard chart this week. With his latest release, “Trespassing” (RCA), he has scored his first No. 1 album, and he is the seventh “American Idol” finalist to reach the top spot on the chart. But with music sales slow, it had the least sales for a No. 1 album in almost a year. “Trespassing,” Mr. Lambert’s second album, sold 77,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Billboard reported that no album had reached No. 1 with fewer sales since last August, when Adele’s “21” (XL/Columbia), scored 76,000 in its 12th week in the top spot. (Adele’s album, a juggernaut for 65 weeks now, holds at No. 2 this week with 63,000.)
