5.27.12 - 6.2.12 Numbers Thread

I'm just responding to the posts I'm reading -- and even with 30 good adds today (which NCOE will not get) -- the album will not go up on iTunes. Albums rarely go up in unit sales in Week 3 -- except for seasonal swings related to holidays -- like Mother's Day. Plus, we are headed into the two slowest sales months of the year.

The track sales may go up with airplay but not always -- and for a song that is not in the Top 20 on iTunes that takes weeks (often 3 weeks) of steady, broad (lots of markets) airplay.

Barring a major event (and there aren't any scheduled), the placement on iTunes is going to drop not go up. My hope is that it can decline slowly and continue to sell steadily perhaps plateauing for Week 4 through 6. But with retail shopping traffic declining as we move into June and July, CD sales drop. And digital sales need something to drive them and I just do not see much to sustain digital sales.

Right now all we have is the Top 40 autoadds and a few other Top 40 stations reporting. We know NCOE is not going to get autoadds on Top 40 because it is not being played by these stations. Similarly, we know that KP is getting played.

We know NCOE is getting two big Top 40 adds this week -- they are in the RCA ads. Plus, it got the expected autoadds from WPLJ and WWFS in NY already today.

I have faith in NCOE -- it is a good single and I believe RCA has managed this really well + Adam has worked really hard. But I am also realistic and it is not going to rocket to the top of the chart like it was released by Katy Perry -- 6 #1 songs, 1 #3 song from this album era gets you a ton of adds for single #8.

I'm trying to stay optimistic here...but it's hard. It doesn't help that I've never believed in this song. When I listen to the album, I always skip this song. If that makes me a bad fan, then so be it. I've never liked the song. If radio people truly "picked" this song, I think we would see more support. I think they just saw "written by Bruno Mars" and said we'll take that one without giving it much thought. I've watched the music vid today a grand total of twice. My true dislike for the song is making me steer clear of the vid.

There also seems to be a problem with timing with his single releases. With both singles, BTIKM and NCOE, they release the single digitally way ahead of the radio impact date and musc vid. Single goes up only so far on iTunes initially due to no airplay and no exposure of music vid. Then sales plummet. Other artists seem to have the release, impact date and vid release all within 2 weeks to maximize the boost in sales/exposure.

CHR radio has known about this impact date for over a month and they're not exactly jumping on it. It was crawling slowly up on CHR and had already started dropping on Mediabase before the impact date. Stations don't seem to jump on songs that have already started dropping and is so far down on iTunes in sales. This song may do okay on HAC but I just don't see CHR showing much support other than the stations he did concerts for. But stations in other parts of the country are just not touching this so far.
