Loving everyone's opinions, very interesting.
OK, I LOVE THIS VIDEO. It may top FYE, even, and I'm not a sci-fi-fanatic, not even a little bit. Here's my take.
Setting
- This is a reflection of a society, controlled, normative environment, where everyone lives. Eat, sleep, work; day in, day out. Routines and technology makes things "safe" and "easy", which for most people is enough. They don't feel the need to break the rules, they just exist. For this reason it is also unmenacing.
Adam's role
-
IMO it's not Adam's chosen role to set them free, he's just being himself; looking at things and society from a different (left of center) perspective and maybe asking himself questions: "Why do we eat these pills?" "Is this all there is to life?" "Who has set these rules and why do they get to decide and surveil us?"Decision
- Perhaps he is bored, needs to test his limits, to see if there's more and decides not to take his pills/nourishment, which also leads him to question the mundane work at the bridge. Crushing the pill let's him see a glimpse of something else, something MORE. He needs to make something happen, for himself, this is no longer enough, he needs to paint with his own colours and he makes a break for it.
Breaking out of the system
- Why others follow him? Same as in real life; most people need someone to take the first step, to show them the way, to make them believe it can be done. It may not be easy, there may be obstacles on the way, but you will be happier, more fulfilled even if you just try. Like, being out and proud? Everyone has to make that choice for themselves, but it's easier, when there's already a path which to follow. Live your life to the fullest, carpe diem.
Gate & guards
- Seeing the possibilities and strongly believing in that vision (Adam seeing the colors before) makes it easier to create a forcefield for oneself and be whatever/whoever you want to be. Adam is not acting as a "savior" to the others; just representing how you can change your life, keeping your eyes & mind open for any situation and making it work for you. The dance-scene just works better visually with more people in it, lol.
Which, in Adam's case, results in wild dance-rave in rainbow colors. How appropriate. 8-)
