Hope this isn't a dying thread cos it's amazing! I have just done something I've been meaning to do for ages, and that is work out the keys for each song on Trespassing. @nationalglampoon you may have already done this?!! I have had the feeling for a while that the majority of songs were in minor keys. And I was right. Even most of the upbeat songs are, which I don't think is the norm? Here are the keys as I worked them out: (based on the main key of the first verse after the intro.. not counting modulations) Trespassing: E minor Cuckoo: E flat minor Shady: E flat minor NCOE: C minor (but does change to E flat major I think) Kickin In: B flat major Naked Love: E flat major PTL: C minor BTIKM: G minor Broken English: E flat minor Underneath: E flat minor Chokehold: D flat minor OOL: E flat minor Runnin: D minor Take Back: C minor Nirvana: B major (but for some reason this song feels like it's in a minor key!) By the Rules: D minor Map: G major The reason I find this interesting, is that most upbeat dance songs I would expect to be in major keys (not researched but that is what I would expect) People wondering why Adam's songs are not as successful on radio..... could this be a reason?? Meaning that subconsciously the music is not familiar / comfortable with most radio listeners.... These songs are unbelievably musically sophisticated.... I have a decent musical ear and I suspect that I will find it a challenge to work out the chord progressions by ear for this music.... so again, major respect to you @nationalglampoon for the time you have put into this! I would be interested in your thoughts / opinions as musicians likely far more qualified than me!! Thanks!!

Interesting about the minor keys. I wonder what the percentage minor top 40 songs is. Adam does improvise in minor keys extremely well. I was in awe of ROF from AI and listened to it over and over just because I couldn't believe how well a pop/rock singer (Adam, that is) could do the improvs.

Basically a major scale with a flattened 7th, same for Kickin' In (B flat mixolydian) and Broken English (E flat mixolydian). Adam uses that a lot, it's more of a slightly exotic or wacky sound. Really popular in pop music lately actually. Map and Nirvana I'd say are E minor and G sharp minor. BTIKM is very ambiguous but I lean towards major.

Y'all may know that nationalglampoon, who started the music thread, has retired from ATop, at least for a while. (Since he unsubscribed, his name now appears on posts as "lambo" for some reason, but that is glampoon.) I hope we can somehow entice him back, as I love his contributions. In the meantime, he is still a Glambert. If you have questions for him about music and such, he has given me permission to share his email address with y'all so you can contact him directly. Just PM me if you want it.
