Content warning: A long opinion piece about Adamtopia. Not in the mood? Scroll is your friend.
Adamtopia, at its current site, has been in existence for a little less than 16 months. In that time, there have been nearly a quarter million posts on 860 topics. We are approaching 1100 members, with an average of 300 members and 3000 guests visiting the forum daily.
Clearly, Adamtopia is a popular site, and we all are doing somethings very right. Still, there are times when we have “dust ups” on the thread with strong debate and hurt feelings expressed. While we continue to gain new members, we have lost some members who used to contribute daily, and for whatever reason we lose them, we miss them.
With 1100 members, there is wonderful diversity in this forum. We frequently personify Adam’s vision of different people coming together and finding a commonality and shared joy. But, have you ever been anywhere in real life or online where 1100 people all agreed on everything, have all the same goals, the same desires, the same opinions, the same language, the same communication styles, and the same world view? Heck, I can’t remember the last time my family of six agreed about everything during a twenty-four hour period. If that is our expectation of Adamtopia, we are sure to be disappointed.
If you choose to post here at Atop, (and I certainly hope you do), you do so knowing that, with 1100 members, there are sure to be a small percentage who will misunderstand what you write, and a handful who will adamantly disagree with you. That does not make your opinion or observation any less valid or appreciated.
If you choose to post here, some of your posts will also appear to be totally ignored. We may ignore it because we agree with it and have nothing to add, or because we disagree with it but have nothing to add. Or because we are in the mood to swim in a different end of the pool at the moment.
There will also be rare occasions when a post you have written receives comment from a mod or is modified or deleted. Every day in the daily news thread alone there are between 300 and 900 posts. On a majority of days, there is no need for the forum mods to step in and do anything. I am lousy at math, but, if 1 in 1000 posts gets modded (and I would guesstimate it is much less frequent than that), that is one tenth of one percent. Strong evidence that the forum treats members with respect and mods use their “super-powers” judiciously and sparingly.
Ninety-nine percent of the time, I enjoy visiting and hanging out in Adamtopia. I hope y’all do, too. When you don’t, because of the interplay of opinions or a comment appearing to be directed at you personally, I suggest A) Scroll is your friend, B) There are always puppies, or kitties, or kiddies yearning to play with you in RL, C) There are always real life chores that can occupy your time and energy for a while, and D) It is almost never counterproductive to take a few deep breaths, back away from the computer/iPhone for a time, and come back when you and or Atop are feeling more glittery and golden.
Adamtopia is a unique and wonderful place to play and interact with amazing people from around the globe about an amazing performer and human being, Adam Lambert. I hope you all hang around to enjoy the roller coaster ride.
