It's Only Make Believe
Written by: Jack Nance/Conway Twitty
Twitty Conway (Brian) - vocals, guitar Cozy Powell - drums
- As a joke during some SAS gigs, Brian created himself an alter ego...his "American cousin" who was a country music buff named Twitty Conway (after famous country artist Conway Twitty). This included performing the country version of Tie Your Mother Down and this track. He liked the joke so much, he used it for his tour, and "opened" for Brian by playing 2-3 songs before Brian took over. In fact how he did so was he ran off stage and his "double" (Brian's son Jimmy in disguise) would come out as Twitty and introduce Brian!
LIVE VERSIONS
LIVE ON VH1
LIVE 1998 - TOUR OPENING
PERSONAL NOTES: My favorite Brian cover I think. It's powerful, rocking, and vocally sublime. Just a great track.
NEXT? Brian composes a lullaby in 1982ish but doesn't get released until 1998. A short but sweet piano ballad entitled My Boy

My Boy
Written by: Brian May
Musicians:
Brian May - vocals, piano
- Initially recorded by Brian back in the Hot Space or even possibly The Game sessions back in 1980-1982. Touched up during these sessions.
- Released on Lullabies With A Difference, a CD compiled by Joan Amratrading for a children's charity called PACES. The charity helps children with cerebral palsy. She asked friends and musicians whom she admires, like Mark Knopfler, Jools Holland, Midge Ure, Tina Turner, The Cranberries, Melissa Etheridge, Brian May, Sarah Randle, Lewis Taylor and of course Joan Armatrading, to give a song with a lullabies theme.
PERSONAL NOTES: VERY short but VERY sweet. Touching song. Next? Brian had one more demo from the Heroes project but this one never found a home because it wasn't finished...Marie's The Name Of His Latest Flame

Marie's The Name Of His Latest FlameWritten by: Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman Musicians: Brian May - guitar, vocals Cozy Powell - drums - Demoed during Brian's Heroes project time but never finished. - Somehow this leaked online to Brian's dismay. QUOTE: "My only further comments would be ... It is the original bootlegging which is the real problem ...yes, of course after that it is anyone's. It's not the money that bothers me - it's the feeling of having been burgled - it's theft ... these tracks, whether they are 'out' or not, definitively belong to someone, and this kind of thing is just part of a depressing attitude which seems to prevail out there now ... of complete disrespect. I think it is sad that the world is like this now. I cannot blame 'hard-core obsessives" for seeking to enjoy rare material ... but I do blame the people who steal it from those who created these private things, and make everything ultimately worthless. It's nothing to do with "purity" either ... any more than you perhaps wanting to be left alone on the toilet. Just a little respect would be nice ... rather than "Let's see what we can get for nothing"." - Brian May from his SoapboxPERSONAL NOTES: - While I'm not chuffed that Brian was upset by it, I am glad to get a chance to hear it. It would have been a nice cover if Brian had completed it, I'm sure. NEXT? Brian wasn't the only one with an album in 1998 making it a great Queen related year! Roger unleashes his Electric Fire

Electric FireA little backgroundRoger was quite busy for a few years, recording his solo album Happiness? and the ensuing tour followed up quickly by working on Made In Heaven with Brian and John that Roger intended to take a long break. 1996 was just that. However in 1997 after the performance with Elton John, Roger got the bug again and quickly wrote and demoed about fourteen tracks! Roger did perform most of the tracks himself with some additional help here and there. At the time Roger declared it would be his final solo album (Lucky for us he changed his mind He would do a small tour of the UK to promote the album which hit #53 in the charts. Years later while releasing his career spanning retrospective, The Lot Roger would call the album his most underrated. Indeed in Queen fandom this is considered his finest album and perhaps the greatest of the Queen solo efforts! TRACKS ON THE ALBUM: 1. Pressure On (Taylor) 2. A Nation Of Haircuts (Taylor) 3. Believe In Yourself (Taylor) 4. Surrender (Taylor) 5. People On Streets (Taylor) 6. The Whisperers (Taylor/Evans) 7. Is It Me? (Taylor) 8. No More Fun (Taylor) 9. Tonight (Taylor) 10. Where Are You Now (Taylor) 11. Working Class Hero (Lennon) 12. London Town C'mon Down (Taylor) BONUS: 13. One Night Stand (Taylor) (Internet only Track) 14. Keep A Knockin' (Penniman/Williams/Mays) (B-Side) First up? The first single...a sequel of sorts to Under Pressure... Pressure On

Pressure On
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals Keith Prior - drums Steve Barnacle - bass guitar Mike Crossley - keyboards Jason Falloon - guitars
- The lead single off the album, it climbed to #45 with little promotion.
- Roger made mention that he looked at it like a sequel of Under Pressure
- Played live throughout his 1998 tour.
QUOTE:
“..just sort of the typical day-to-day pressures which everybody sort of has.”
– Roger Taylor
ALTERNATE VERSION
SINGLE EDIT
- NOT NECESSARY - merely cuts a minute out bit by bit and makes it a more streamlined song if a bit more rushed.
LIVE
LIVE AT THE ASTORIA 1999
- A nice live version
PERSONAL NOTES: This is one of my fav RT songs. I don't really know why. I love the irreverent lyrics - Politics, Schmolitics. I love the industrial intro going into the nicely sung lyric. It's catchy. A great single. One of RT's best solo efforts.
NEXT? Another biting RT lyric - A Nation Of Haircuts

A Nation Of Haircuts
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals, percussion Keith Prior - drums Steve Barnacle - bass guitar Mike Crossley - keyboards Keith Airey - guitars
- Played live throughout the 1999 tour - A concert favorite as the crowd love the "You're so fucking cool" line and would shout it at Rog. - A social commentary on the UK as he saw it at the time.
ALTERNATE VERSIONS
CLUB CUT
- Used as a B-Side - A dancy mix but surprisingly retains some guitar.
LIVE VERSION
LIVE IN MANCHESTER 1999
- A concert favorite.
PERSONAL NOTES: The fun album continues. It's silly, irreverent, and fun to shout!
NEXT? Roger gets motivational...Believe In Yourself

Talon, last Saturday I listened to a little of 'Queen at the BBC' on Radio 2 but missed most of it. Today I have time to listen to the broadcast but they have taken off their iplayer and I can only get the snippet. I've looked on youtube and soundcloud but can't find it. Do you know where I can listen to the broadcast? I don't want to download anything.

Ah that sucks! I don't know of anywhere else you can hear it as of now. Sad as it was a great show! I'll keep an eye out for you though and if anything surfaces. It will most likely surfaces as a download but if so, I can probably upload it to soundcloud or something...

Believe In Yourself
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals, drums Steve Barnacle - bass guitar Mike Crossley - keyboards Jason Falloon - guitars
- Played live throughout the 1999 tour - another big crowd favorite as they loved to scream the echoed lyrics
- A straightforward encouragement song from RT
LIVE
LIVE AT THE ASTORIA 1999
PERSONAL: Wonderful song if a little saccharine. Great when done live especially! NEXT? Roger tackles a very serious subject with guest vocalist Treana Morris. It's domestic violence and the song is Surrender
