- As a part of the Common Decency initiative Brian and Kerry cover a song by Ruth Moody who is in a band called the Wailin' Jennys. Ruth gave Brian and Kerry her blessing. Brian hopes to inspire people to vote in the upcoming election.

PERSONAL NOTES: I love it. It's better than a lot of the Brian/Kerry stuff as it seems a bit more...modern It fits in well with some of the recent singer songwriter camps - earnest, bordering on but never fully going cheesy.

From everyone I've been in contact with a press release is rather imminent. I believe they are waiting for the current tour to end but we should probably get a press release next week...and I would think that would mean an early-mid November release date...definitely 2015.

I look forward to the press release because I want to know *HOW* excited to be. From the rumored sets I'm...mildly happy. It is a similar set list to the Rainbow shows, so not much more new there. It has been heavily bootlegged. There doesn't seem to be much on the DVD/Blu-Ray as a bonus. BUT We haven't heard the rest of the second CD for bonus tracks. *IF* they include Hangman from the Tokyo show they are pulling from that they using as bonuses from the DVD/Blu-Ray, I'd be ecstatic just for that one song.

There are rumors of including a soundcheck which would also be kind of cool to see

Placing this here for posterity. What is it? I'm not entirely sure. It is quite possible this is a fan mix...or an unofficial mix BUT unlike most fakes or fan creations there was enough smoke here for me to wonder.. I will document the further official releases shortly (the three Brian collaborations from this year - which I'll wait til the end to collect in one post and of course the just released "A Night at the Odeon")

But this...Gold Mix. I love it first of all. It is far better in many ways from what was released on Queen Forever. The quick and dirty. At the time of Queen Forever it was discussed that Brian and Roger had many back and forth discussions with the Jacskon estate on how to handle the Freddie and Michael recordings. Exactly what was said and what was decided is unclear. We know there was a demo of "State of Shock" (which is still unreleased), a demo of this song, and a demo of a third song (entitled "Victory" that never even leaked though from those who have heard it have said that it isn't a very good number). The common accepted story is that the two estates agreed at least in part to let Queen have There Must Be More as it was more of a Freddie number (he wrote it, he released a version of it already, etc.) while perhaps the Jackson estate would use State of Shock on a future release (for similar reasons - more of a Michael number). No one has said whether Victory would be worked on. Queen (Brian and Roger) definitely worked on both TMBMTLTT and State of Shock - and may have worked on Victory.

At the end of the day there were a few versions of TMBMTLTT and Queen and the Jackson estate weren't seeing eye to eye on which to release. Producer William Orbit was given charge to make a mix and it is what he came up with that the Jackson estate agreed to release - and is what is what is on Queen Forever. It is well known that the Queen fanbase was not very satisfied with this mix as it buried Freddie's voice (in fact - this writer believes that it is because Freddie sounds better than Jackson that the Jackson estate preferred a mix that buried Freddie a bit.) In fact, upon debuting the mix on the radio even Brian and Roger seemed a bit non-plussed about the mix and even mentioned that they had done a mix which sounded more like an actual duet.

Is this that mix? It could be. It does sound closer to a duet. Another argument is that it contains some lines unheard in any previous mix of TMBMTLTT so it has outtakes used meaning it is even more likely to come out of the Queen camp. This one though does sound a bit unfinished...as in perhaps a work in progress? My thoughts? This is a leak from someone in the Queen camp who was unhappy with the Orbit version. Whether this is a work in progress version of Brian and Roger's mix or even what they had finished (doubtful with as little percussion on it as there is), I do think this is NOT a fan mix. But without official confirmation i'm not going to include it on any real discography...but I'll play it more. I just wish we had more of the Orbit version instrumentation....

A Night At The Odeon

A little background

The band had just completed a successful tour when they were given the Christmas Eve slot on BBC to produce an hour long concert. This is the documentation of that evening. An oft bootlegged show it's nice to see it get an official release.

It is great to see some 70s gigs get some life again and it seems this won't be the last (thank goodness!) but this wasn't quite as well received as the Rainbow release for a few reasons. I knew this was going to be a bit polarizing. One one hand it is more of what the hardcore fans want. Outside of a studio archival release (such as an anthology), nothing is more craved than 70s gigs after an over-saturation of 80s product. With that being said there were a few negatives of sort.

a. The setlist. This wasn't a typical ANATO tour gig. It was cut to an hour and with what was cut it is virtually identical to the Rainbow sets. The only "new" song is incorporating "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the medley. This might have been rectified by b.

b. The bonuses - The Rainbow included a full other gig (from a separate tour even - though in the same year). Why not here? The band was at Hammersmith for multiple dates in December with a more full ANATO setlist. Or even another gig on the tour - we know they have the Budokan from May which really would have been a hit as we would have gotten the first release in any format of "Hangman". That was a bit of a let down. To further on the bonuses we did get? Three videos from Budokan (of normal tracks) but not cleaned up much and sounding not great and that had been previously released in Japan on the Days of Our Lives documentary bonus material. We get a 22 minute documentary which is nice although obviously a documentary that has been sat on for a while as the interview with Brian and Roger showcases a brown haired Brian. The only other bonus music is a 12" Vinyl replica of the Bo Rap single although it has a more interesting b-side - "Now I'm Here" from the soundcheck before Odeon - of course that begs the question - why only on the vinyl? And why not include the whole soundcheck in the deluxe set?

There is some tat - balloons, pins, a tour itinerary (much like Rainbow). The book and poster are nice although nothing I'll look at more than a few times.

BUT enough complaints - it is still a very worthy release and nice to have an official version of. I guess the major problem is not the fault of the release...it's the fact that it feels like a stepping stone sort of release. If this had been released before Rainbow it would have been much more well received - it was a victim to how good the Rainbow release was. BUT not only that there is much more anticipation for what will come next - as it would be a far more anticipated release...we know they are working on more 70s stuff per Queen Productions. ..Something like Hyde Park 76, Earls Court 77, Houston 77, Hammersmith 79 or perhaps the rumored Live Killers Box Set. All of which even without bonus material would be more anticipated than Hammersmith 75.

Rare Freddie Mercury vocal tracks recorded during the late singer's original Barcelona sessions anchor a stirring new song, "Little Freddie Goes to School," produced by Irish composer Stuart Leathem.

Leathem begins "Little Freddie" with a haunting sitar loop and distant drums that build but dissipate to welcome lead vocalist Esther Trousdale. The track's trip-hop vibe is a far cry from the bombastic glam of Queen, but Leathem deftly structures the chorus around Mercury's vocals. Towards the end, Trousdale joins the singer for a hypnotizing harmony.

"Little Freddie Goes to School" features vocals from Mercury's "When This Old Tired Body Wants to Sing" and "The Golden Boy." The former was a jam Mercury recorded with longtime collaborator Mike Moran, while a version of the latter eventually appeared on 1988's Barcelona, a collaborative record with Catalan soprano, Montserrat Caballé (both tracks appear on the extensive Mercury box set, The Solo Collection).

The new single arrives to help raise awareness of Tuesday's World AIDS Day. Proceeds and royalties from "Little Freddie Goes to School" will benefit the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the HIV/AIDS charity established in Mercury's name. The song arrives a year after three previously unreleased Queen cuts surfaced on the compilation, Queen Forever, including the Michael Jackson collaboration, "There Must Be More to Life Than This."

A long in-the-works Mercury biopic is also moving forward, with The Theory of Everything scribe Anthony McCarten now set to write the screenplay. Spectre actor Ben Whishaw has also been listed as the frontrunner to play Mercury after Sacha Baron Cohen dropped out due to "creative differences" with the members of Queen, who serve as producers on the film.
