There's a quote from Paul Rodgers about Brian and harmonies that is very appropriate here:
How true. And how brilliant!

Part 2! Brian records with Quartz, although it wouldn't see the light of day til 1980. A little background. Quartz was a British heavy metal band who started off supporting Black Sabbath and AC/DC on tour. They released their first album in 1977 and it was produced by Tony Iommi (guitarist for Black Sabbath who took a shine on them during their tour). They would last til about 1983 until guitarist/keyboardist Geoff Nichols would leave to join Black Sabbath. The band folded afterwards until reuniting in 2011. CirclesWritten by: ? Musicians: Mike Taylor - vocals Brian May - guitar Mike Hopkins - guitar Geoff Nichols - guitar, keyboards Derek Arnold - bass Malcom Cope - drums Ozzy Osbourne - vocals - Brian became very good friends with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath over the years (and later would guest on his album while Tony would be the guest rhythm guitarist at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert). When Tony was producing the first album for Quartz in 1977, he enlisted some friends including Brian and Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. - This particular song wouldn't see the light of day until it surfaced as a B-Side during their 1980 second album release. It was also placed on that album as a bonus track during a remastering. PERSONAL NOTES: Um. Well? I'm not a big fan. It's fairly generic rock that is not bad work at all...just forgettable. Next up we begin delving into the live section of 1977 including two tours and some other special shows!

On this slow Sunday I'm skipping around through various threads, including Queen! Whoa! That Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together) song is SO AWESOME! Adam could totally do this song, and I just have to say that I get more and more impressed with Dr Bri's songwriting abilities. God, he's written some beautiful stuff! Question: I was reading on wiki that Brian May "stated in interviews that he suffered from severe depression in the late 1980s and early 1990s, even to the point of contemplating suicide, for reasons having to do with his troubled first marriage, his perceived failure as a husband and a father, his father Harold's death, and Freddie Mercury's illness and eventual death." So, my question is... Did Brian write any songs during this stressful period? And if he did, do they reflect what he was going through?

Re. It's LateOk, talon... you kind of answered my previous question, but I didn't know Brian was "having issues" back in '76 or 77 when he wrote It's Late. It was another 10-11 years before he and his wife separated. Gosh... that's a lot of years to be conflicted and drowning in angst. The lyrics to It's Late are really poignant.

OT.... Talon, when Queen asked the fans (during pre-Sonisphere QAL) which Queen songs they would like QAL to perform, can you share with us the setlist you requested? At that time I really have no idea which songs to submit other than what Adam had already performed since I had very limited knowledge of the Queen's catalog (but... not anymore thanks to you ). However, at that time, I did read some of the posted request in QOL and saw requests such as SSOR (never heard until QAL), Death on Two Legs (again, no idea), Killer Queen (not familiar), Liar (never heard), etc. But whatever request that I read was not familiar to me, I looked them up just to hear the melody. It is different now since you had been meticulously detailing the history/background of each song. It makes a whole lot of difference and more appreciation of each music they have written/produced. Did not encounter Dragon Attack in the posted requests but instantly loved it the first time (QAL-Kiev) I heard it and was wondering "what is this song?" until a Queen fan logged in and identified it. Should there be another QAL event and they would ask again, thanks to you, I now have an idea which songs to request...but I'll wait till you finish the album presentation before I make up my list since I'm sure there are more fantastic songs to come. This is really an awesome thread (comprehensive, informative, detailed, organized) and this is all because of you. So thank you so much!

Another OT...
Talon, during Live Aids in 1985, was Freddie already aware of his ailment? You mentioned that he had some nodules in his throat and was advised by his physician not to perform but he did it anyway. In spite of his throat problems (which nobody can tell) he did a phenomenal performance and so did the band. I wonder if those nodules were an early signs of his illness or not related at all... just wondering.

Seoulmate... so glad to see you here... awww, TY, bb! I try hard to read everything, but often I'm just speed-reading as fast as I can! Talon is a walking encyclopedia, and everything he writes is easy to understand! Talon... I also like all your little "personal notes" after many of the songs.
