The rock giants are until the end of February travelling around Europe's capitals, make six stops in Germany along the way. To kick off this tour section around 15,500 visitors flowed into the sold out Cologne Arena. Generation mix in the audience ________________________________________ • Hours before the concert, presented by WDR 2, there were long queues at the entrances. Noteworthy here was the colorful mix: Fans who have aged with Queen formed the lion's share, but there were also whole families and many twenty-somethings were to be seen. The latter fans, group betrayed by Transparents, made clear who had lured them to this Oldies-Show: Adam Lambert. The remaining queen original members Brian May and Roger Taylor took note in 2009 at the talent show "American Idol" and became aware of the young man, who has since had a remarkable career as a singer ("Whataya Want From Me") and musical actor ("Hair") (sic!) , Birthday party with 15,500 guests Why the Beau (2012 he was voted "Music's Sexiest Man" on billboard.com) brought the old warhorse to now go on yet another big world tour, quickly became apparent in Cologne. According to his own words he does not claim to fill the giant footsteps of Freddy Mercury who died in 1991, but he has the skills to do it: a strong, sure-footed in all registers, big gestures, an androgynous appearance and a queen dignified pathos with all the theatrics, Similarly, the energy, with which Lambert sweeps from 20.20 clock onwards for a good two hours across the huge stage and the catwalk and the Mini Stage up into the middle of the audience, was worthy of reverence to Mercury. Costume changes from black leather to leopard skin suit and a golden crown on his Pompadour fit into the picture. He quickly had the last skeptics on his side, led a choir of 15,500 voices safely through rock anthems like "Somebody To Love" and "I Want It All" and used dancing and waving arms to reach up into the distant upper tier. Another sympathy Proof: The entire Cologne Arena intoned a "Happy Birthday" to Adam, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on that day. Young female fans in the front rows of the standing-room section had prepared appropriate placards with messages of greeting. ________________________________________ Still Going Strong The approximately twice as old queen heroes May and Taylor showed, starting with the driving opener "One Vision" to the last encore, that they are neither old or tired yet, and that they have yet to become a bit quiet (the wording here is taken from an old German saying, so that is why it sounds a bit strange:, basically, it means, they are still going strong). They were supported as they were since many years by their live companion and keyboardist Spike Edney, and by bassist Neil Fairclough. In keeping with the generation mix in the audience, the 23-year-old son or Roger Taylor, Rufus Tiger, showed his skills on percussion, and he represented Papa Roger on drums, while the latter took over the lead vocals on "A Kind Of Magic". The highlight of this family meeting: a father-son drum duel. The Junior on the main stage, Roger Taylor on the additional stage. It was beautiful watching the faces of the two on the video screen that hovered in the form of a giant Q back of the stage. Close-ups of the extensive solos by guitar god May showed here that under the graying curls his fingers ran nimbly as ever on the fingerboard of his self-made "Red Special". Close to the original The Cologne setlist contained many of the big hits from the 40-year band history, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions". Adam Lambert was certainly not a criterion when choosing from the vast repertoire of queen, for he demonstrated to an enthusiastic audience Cologne an impressive vocal and style range. This was also the tenor of the viewers' attitudes to the microphone of WDR-2 reporter Oliver Rustemeyer after the show. With stage presence and vocal skills fans found Adam Lambert to be much closer to the original and therefore more suitable than his predecessor Paul Rodgers. A highlight was accordingly for many fans a brief duet of Adam and Freddy (sic!) via video perfectly synchronized during "Bohemian Rhapsody". Whoever wants to experience the show with the current line-up in Germany, must -with a little luck- try to get hold of one of the remaining tickets for Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt or Stuttgart. This one is kind of 'interesting', more in a work dynamic kind of way, rather than anything that has to do with the concert. It would be too long to translate line by line, so here a summary/sample paraphrasing what is going on. It's a dialog between a junior reporter, who went to the concert in Koeln and the senior reporter who is hosting the show and did not see the show. So he invites Junior in to report back from the concert.
This is kind of a 30 second short version of what happens in the 5 minutes :
Senior: Introduces Adam with Trespassing, calls it nice pop music, says he has a good solo career, but now he is also stepping in to the lead singer for Queen role. He introduces Junior...
Senior: So you went to the QAL concert, how was it? Junior: Great, Adam does a convincing job filling the difficult...great voice, fits better than Paul Rogers, can do rock, pop, folk, funk, all you need for Queen... Senior: interrupts....but doing Queen is more than having a good voice...Freddie was a presence, a show... Junior: well Freddie was his own show in many ways, but Adam does not imitate him, but pulls from many different influences, like... Senior: interrupts again...influences, sure, so he is an imitator, which is what you would expect from a casting show candidate... It was clear this could never really work, ...
Junior: No, it was done in a good way. ....now he starts stumbling, noticing that he cannot get through, he wants to say 'star', does not dare to say it anymore, talks about "star imitation"...etc., more looking like Prince, fumbles around, contradicts his own introduction, then trying to get his footing back: He has star power, but he is not Freddie. But it was even holding his own, in the direct comparisons, when Freddie was on screen in the background. And the audience loved it. It was sold out, lots of applause...
Senior: ...of course it is, they love tribute shows, they are always a draw.
Senior: Glad a good show was had by all, and musical sensitivities were not harmed.
================== Off camera, you know he lectured Junior about not being so naive and gullible, and probably told him to try to be a more arts oriented journalist, requiring originality rather than imitation, etc...
It never occurred to the senior, that maybe he was off, and that junior had it right.

Very frustrating for the junior journalist, I am sure. And I don't want to know, in how many media outlets across the globe, this same scenario has played itself out, in the past, leading to some of the non-favorable critiques that we have read, where we have wondered, whether the journalist was even at the same concert that we were at. Just usually, we don't get to be live witnesses of this dynamic in action.
That is why it is so difficult to make a paradigm shift, for any artist. And that is why an artist who brings new ideas and skills forward takes so much longer to solidify his career, compared to somebody who just follows the trodden path.
Interestingly, a huge part of the UK, seems to have taken that leap now and made that shift towards Adam, probably because the signal from the BBC and a few other lead opinion makers had changed course. In Germany, we have to expect more reports similar to what we have seen in the past (prior to UK).
