HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ...
... cait1602, cherrytree, ella, Finnbert, ...
... glmbertforever, irish1139, jonan, ...
... pattihum, radarecho and restless!
Betty, such an interesting assortment of cakes. However, I had to chuckle at this one at first glance--"Why did they put whole wheat spaghetti on it?" Happy Birthday to our crew today. Haha, yes, at first I thought the same when I saw that cake but I looked it up and it seems that it's a typical Swiss speciality, a so-called "Vermicell Torte"(Vermicell-cake)! And the "spaghetti" on top of the cake are made of chestnut-puree!

O/T -- but this is David Bowie giving out an award in 1975. If you have never seen it, it is pretty amazing. youtu.be/CT79ysge1bM

USA Today: Duncan Jones, Bowie's son; Gaga's performance: over performance was overexcited, irrational.......

I thought that at some point during the Grammy's last night, someone on stage said that the performance were sung live. I thought it was a good sign but also a jab at other music award shows that rely on lipsynching. Momtomany (I think) commented last night about the relative lack of female booty shaking and skimpy clothes. (Of course Rhianna was absent). And it was nice to see performances that were more "real" sound-wise and not just relying on sexiness. And Mom mentioned the interesting commercials. The monotuned piano caught my attention. Watch the "Making of" video at the end. They actually built a special piano that had all strings tuned to middle C. I was wondering how they did that because you cannot tune all the strings of a regular piano to middle C. How disconcerting would that be for the pianist to play without the pitches changing?! Way cool and it's going viral. Android's concept is "Be Together, Not the Same" a useful metaphor for many situations, I immediately thought of education. So now we just need Adam to do the same commercial with his voice. The behind the scenes vid takes an extra click while the first one is going so thought I'd add it here for simplicity.

I watched the Lady Gaga tribute for Bowie. What did you guys think of it? I loved the start with the facial projection, very original and beautifully done. The rest : it was a lot. Before you knew which song she started singing, it had already ended. The techniques (ao with the piano en mic, all the song changes (i now see why there was so much rehearsel)) really had potential to make a very legendary tribute. And as an Adam fan i couldn't stop thinking how Adam would have done it. I think he would have nailed it, i think if he had done it, it could have been THE performance that would make Adam a householdname

O/T -- but this is David Bowie giving out an award in 1975. If you have never seen it, it is pretty amazing. youtu.be/CT79ysge1bMQ3....do you have any ideas what an artist with the potential of Adam needs to do to get to the place the top tier of artists like Bowie, get to. The only one actively working at all with this level of reverence today is, arguably, Prince. He has this stature for many of the same reasons Bowie et al from years past did....you always have to pay to enjoy him. Familiarity has always eventually bred contempt...or at least, boredom. Is it even possible for a current artist to gain this level of 'stardom' or has the playing field changed so much that this is not possible any more? I remember the discussions re the merits of how Colonel Parker managed Elvis...you famously almost never saw him unless you paid for the privilege...and that is why his TV appearance were so special....but Parker then over exposed Elvis in b and c grade exploitive films and undid all the good done in other ways.... I don't think Adam would thrive in the isolation necessary these days to gain the sense of mystery Prince enjoys...it must be a very private life he lives. Do you see another way to gain the respect without going as mainstream as he has been doing this last iteration of himself we now see....There is a reason Elton John is not as iconic as Bowie and I suspect that is more to do with his exposure than talent. I guess this is the classic Scylla and Charybdis of fame isn't it... For all of how many here were beating up on Gaga yesterday, she is still the only pop artist really putting themselves out there these days and I suppose that is what I loved so much about her performance. I agree it was pretty frenetic at times...but damn, it was daring. I hate seeing Adam keeping his performing down low, so to speak. He was wonderful at the Grammy party, but he has done that in a far more exciting way many times...the first half of the performance was especially controlled....this is definitely not the same man who thrilled us all with WLL at Fantasy Springs...and a little of me misses that, even though I understand.... Sorry if I upset anyone....that absolutely is not what I mean to do...nor am I niggling or poking...and I have a busy day so I won't even see the hate responses for a few hours, I think,...I really do think on this and I do not have an answer....I don't think Adam does either....just wondering...musing...

I opened my local morning newspaper and read about the Grammy's. Darryl Sterdam, wrote a syndicated article about the Grammy's for Canadian newspapers. The article made me mad, sad and yet offered a chuckle or two. I am not posting the on line link.
(I know it is always in the eye of the beholder.) Some of what he said jived with me, other comments --not so much. For those of us that were left confused by Gaga, or questioning her, he thought she "stole the show"---"the best five minutes of the show".
"Strong performances from Adele, The Weekend, the Shakes and others." Well that hit a nerve. I thought Adele was horrible and it bugs me when "a star" gets a free pass. Shakes--not my cuppa.
He thought the marathon show was ---poorly paced, meaningless procession of questionable choices, missed opportunities and chemistry free collaborations (Tori Kelly and James Bay come on down!).
I thought his Highs and Low categories were great. ie The comment about Ed Sherran was priceless. Wimpiest Win -- "Thinking out Loud earned his first two Grammys. Hope he enjoys playing that for the rest of his life. But at least his parents finally got to see him win."

So do we think Adam will be off to Toronto over the next week before TOHT 2 starts on the 23rd to shoot his scene in RHPS?
