geezlouise, have you ever seen Semi Precious Weapons Live? I have! They were sooooooooooooo far out there, no way they would ever have mainstream success. And look at Bonnie McKee! Incredible songwriter! 2 of the biggest hits off Katy Perry's previous album! Great personality, very pretty! She knows all the right people But she can not make it as a solo artist.
Sometimes, (often) we simply can not define or find a reason for why one artist is bigger than another. I have come to the conclusion, it has a lot to do with luck & right place at the right time. Or in music's case, "the right song at the right time!"

Justin is very 'out there' as a performer, but it doesn't negate the fact that phobias and prejudices do exist in the industry. And it also doesn't negate the fact that he was told that appearing more fem than Adam in a photo was a negative thing. Or that Adam was perceived as the bellwether 'can't look more fem than' in the industry.

Or in music's case, "the right song at the right time!" Well now patti...are you defining "mainstream" as automatically 'average' or 'normal' or 'not queer'??? What standards make this "They were sooooooooooooo far out there, no way they would ever have mainstream success." not homophobic ....or choose your term but means the same. I mean as long as even WE can blithely assume that anything not fitting a heteronormative template, will never be "mainstream", the situation has not a prayer of changing and we are really simple corroboratingTranter's claims. I do not see gun-toting, 10 gallon wearing western wear with twangy nasal vocals as anything approaching my definition of mainstream...so why is that cowboy not considered 'out there'? I would offer that if that cowboy wore pink he would suddenly be considered non-mainstream even if everything else about his vocals and performance remained the same. Ergo....the issue is the 'pink'...the gay.... Q3 comment: Clearly you are passionate about your point of view -- but stay respectful and abide by the Adamtopia Guidelines. And most certainly speak only for yourself -- do not extend your opinion to others as in "WE".

Ergo....the issue is the 'pink'...the gay.... As far as a mainstream career goes, we can use the 3 gay men I mentioned in my original post as examples. All are extremely talented men. Sam is an OK Gay. Acceptable as a mainstream artist, thus he has the biggest mainstream career. Justin is at the other end of the industry spectrum. He is Way Too Gay. Not acceptable as a mainstream artist, but acceptable as a song writer for others. Adam is somewhere in the middle. Less mainstream success than Sam, but still able to navigate the mainstream as a performer. It is what it is.
