Girldrummer: Yes agree Adam made it, and yes Adam has the IT FACTOR. And yes! Alisan ran into difficulties with a label, and as you said, so did many in the final years of AI. I think it was a combination of Adam as a personality, with financial help. In the majority of its years of operation, the AI recording company contracts initially --- truly invested ---in their contracted artists with bigger money and intent than the Voice's contract/ $100,000. The difference for Adam was a GENUINE goal to produce an album and promote the artist. The contestants may have felt the contracts stifling, but it got them moving in a career they did not have before. In Adam's year, even the second and third place individuals---got recording contracts, and the contestants got a tour for promotion. If only the first place contestant got a contract? If Adam did not fight to have some financial backing to tour after his first album? If Adam did not fight to get better terms than others? Adam may have had a career after AI, but his path was luckily enhanced by financial backing due to his demonstated charisma. I would think the goal for the recording company was to make money from the artists, just like any other signed artist. The TV show had the bonus of developing fan bases through each season, and with Adam that has carried him. BUT, with times changing even AI ran out of steam supporting artists. Was it ---the background implications of drops in industry album and singles sales? internet downloading? the quality/personal charisma of the chosen top contestants?--- to outline a few things that could have impacted. Who knows... who cares...not me...I am just thrilled that Adam created his chance and was supported with a contract. It has changed my world and his. In this case, fortune did reward the brave, as per Paula. You are absolutely correct, stampsgal...with one small point... It was contestants 1, 2, and 4 that got the contracts...#3 was Danny Gokey and he did not get one at the time...Alison Iraheta was 4th... I am rather looking forward to seeing what they do to revamp Idol....IMO it was always the best of the singing contests...and I include AMG in that...

It's interesting that The Voice has never produced a big star. The celebrity judges have always been the focus, even more so than on Idol, IMO. Viewers love to watch and they love to vote. But they often totally forget about the contestants the moment the season finale is over. It's happened on Idol, too, especially in its final years. The key is to have more than just a voice. Good voices are a dime and dozen. You have to have some other quality. Personality, pathos, SOMETHING. Adam has that extra "something" that has kept his AI fans loyal to him long after his season ended. He has the perfect meld of qualities, both as a singer and as a celebrity: humor, poise, confidence, personality, intelligence, edginess. Feel bad for Alisan. I do like her just fine. But as I said before, although she has a lovely voice and is attractive, I just don't see her as all that distinctive. I wonder how long The Voice will last. Interest is waning for singing shows. Still have mixed feelings about the return of AI other than it's possible benefit to Adam. Three big reasons that Idol made bigger stars than The Voice: 1. AI had a bigger audience. The Voice has never had the kind of audience reach that Idol had at in its prime. At peak (2013) it was averaging around 15 million viewers and was the #7 TV Program. It has averaged 10.8 million viewers. In comparison, American Idol Season 2 (2003) through Season 11 (2013) had 20 million to 31 million viewers and was the #1 or #2 rated program. 2. AI contestants were on TV a lot more. I am sure someone has counted on-air minutes -- but I a not that nuts. To illustrate: Adam had around 25 performances on Idol (including non-competitive performances) plus features and a hometown visit. On Idol, competitive performances were show in full -- with a judges discussion about each performance. Alison Porter had 10 performances on The Voice (including non-competitive performances). I believe all of her performances were shown, but many The Voice competitive performances are "montaged" (only clips shown). 3. Both shows have the highest ratings in the US Southeast and Midwest = Country genre is advantaged. The Voice is more skewed to markets where Country music is huge, pop not so much. The result is that Blake wins a lot and the contestants have been most successful in Country genre. Bonus reasons: The Voice has two seasons a year = winning is not as special/newsworthy, the music business has changed.

Danny did get a contract right away with Sony Nashville. One more Season 8 contestant got signed in 2009 -- Michael Sarver -- to one of the many, many independent labels distributed by Universal Music Group. So he got a major label distribution deal and funding for his album. Season 8 was pretty amazong, but American Idol Season 5 (the top rated season) had the most signed artists -- 8 of the Top 10 got "real" record deals: 1. Taylor Hicks Arista Records (Sony) 2. Katharine McPhee RCA Records [then UMG/ Verve Forecast, and most recently eOne (indie)] 3. Elliott Yamin Hickory Records (Sony/ATV) technically indie label with major label distinction and funding 4. Chris Daughtry RCA (still there) 5. Paris Bennett 306 Entertainment / TVT Records (Sony) 6. Kellie Pickler BNA Records (Sony) 7. Ace Young - no major label, unsuccessful indie release 8. Bucky Covington Lyric Street Records (Disney Music Group country label) 9. Mandissa Sparrow (UMG Christian label)10. Lisa Tucker - was signed to at least one record deal but no major releases
