I'm curious why the tenors would sing the song in a lower key than Adam, since they are tenors like Adam? Cassie, those were really good points you made in the comments to the comparison video. Ah. There's the rub. Even tho' they are classically trained and tenors, they are NOT tenors like Adam. Adam is a special type of tenor, referred to as leggiero tenor in classical music. They have a higher range than other tenors, and a brighter, livelier tone on top with an almost baritone sound in their low register. Very rare. And even among leggiero tenors, I think Adam's tone is exceptional. It has so many harmonic overtones to it. That's why I brought this VT over. To illustrate that even accounting for training and technique, Adam is extraordinary. I remember when Dr May said that the first time Adam sang it, back in 2012 rehearsals, it was the first time he'd heard his song in the key he wrote it for! He cried!

Human beings compare. That's what they do I think the brain is probably hardwired to compare things. It would have been an asset in the competition to survive. Which is the best fruit? Which is the best hunting ground? Who is the prettiest (meaning most fertile and resilient) female? Who is the strongest, best provider? Where can we find the best water supply?
These days we argue over who is the best baseball team, the best quarterback, the best chocolate maker? Where is the best neighborhood to buy a house, which is the best school, what is the best family car? Who is the best political candidate?
Comparisons cannot be avoided. The tricky thing is that we don't agree on the criteria that define "best." Is the best quarterback defined by the one with the highest percentage of completed passes? The number of yards passed per game? The number of times he escapes being sacked? The number of points he scores? His average per game? Per season? Per career?
No different with performers. It is why there is so much emphasis placed upon range. Range can be objectively measured. So, if the best singer is the one with the broadest or highest range, we can make a definitive determination of "best." As opposed to something like tone, Is the best tone that which has the most guts or the most brilliance or the most grit or the most consistency? Are the criteria different depending on the genre of music, the setting, the role, the theme?
Those who don't care for the comparison of Adam to other singers, I suggest you scroll, as I scroll thru discussions on Adam and Sauli. To each their own.

These who is better discussions are not making me happy. I posted that video, because the video was imo well done, and because most of the comments on the video carefully stayed away from negatives, and did a good job at giving Adam credit without dissing Freddie. Well suit yourself. Here are a few other thoughts though: I am not one of these 'higher is always better' apostles. Yes, for Adam, higher is often better, because this is where his voice sits, but that does not mean that another artist has to also sing higher, just to compete. When performing a song, there are two things that need to come together, imo: a) what does the song require to bring out the intention and atmosphere of the song correctly. And b) what suits the performer. The two need to find a happy marriage, otherwise it is better not to perform the song at all. But just because you have the higher voice, does not make you automatically better. It just defines where your voice sits and might limit you in what songs you can or should take on. In my mind, Adam owns the song today. Not so much because he can take it high, but because his other vocal qualities, i.e. breath support, legato lines, etc, allow him to interpret the song so well. But even with Adam, certain days where he performs with emotional depth will imo overwrite the specifics of how many times he takes the song up to specific high notes. The Isle of Write and the O2 versions and a few others stand out, because of their emotional focus. Magical moments! That cannot be forced. That happens, and with Adam it has happened many times, but some just still stand out above the rest. I do not care too much for either of the group versions, tbh, just because the need to harmonize with each other takes away the ability to bring the individual emotional interpretation to the front. These performances become more about being vocally pretty, rather than intense. Freddie has the freedom to develop his own interpretation in the live version, of course, and does so. In the studio version, because of the choir, and the studio setting, he is also reigned in, but at least he is leading the effort, so he has a bit more control over the phrasing and the arch of the performance, even though it is pieced together, eventually. Maybe, I need to go back to not liking comparison videos. Maybe I am also just not willing to hop on this band-waggon of 'Adam is the only one who can sing'. Don't get me wrong, I became an Adam fan because I realized how special and enormous his talent and ability is, but it is not like nobody else has a voice type similar to Adam, or can truly sing. I am thinking Lee Hyuk, Park Hyo Shin, Dimash Kudaibergen, Darren Espanto (mabye, he is still young). Anyhow, a small and elite circle, and Adam will always be my favorite, but I am just not willing to isolate him so much from the rest of the singing community. Must feel terribly lonely, if it were indeed true, thankfully it is not. And then there are other people with different voice types, and they can also be interesting to listen to. Freddie falls into that latter category, of course. We all have different opinions, I guess. SOS by Dimash is pretty special. Ice skater Denis Ten? used it in performance.

I personally don't get "high" on Adam because of his multi octave range and how high he can go vocally. For me, it is the quality of his voice and how he conveys emotions and interprets lyrics. It is the whole package, nicely wrapped.

I thought we did pretty good on not blasting the non-Adam singers so all's good in my book.
For comparison I thought I'd bring this over. It's a Freddie, Adam, Paul look but it has Roger singing too which I thought was interesting as I hadn't seen him alone on the songs before.
I can see why they invited Paul. He had swagger, he was well known, he was different, and the crowd knew the songs so he didn't have to sing over them. I think much more of a participation event whereas with Adam it's more of a show. Also Adam, for all he changes things up is very faithful to the songs themselves. He changes timing but not phrases. I think some of Paul's tune changes are interesting and it's how he made the songs his own.

Not only because of the range either. That Durbin fellow can sing really high but I cringe every time I hear him and turn him off half way thru any song. I have no argument for those who think Freddie is the greatest but he does not move me the way that Adam does. And I don't need anyone to explain to me why I like Adam's voice and presentation better. I just do. And liking Adam's voice better is not saying there are no other good singers. But must say this conversation and the opinions are so much more interesting than Sauli walking the dog. Tho, I will admit that it warms my heart when Adam sometimes shares pictures of Pharaoh or of him and Pharaoh together because when he does it occasionally, it always seems to come from a place of love. But "to each their own" is correct and scroll is a friend.

I think some of Paul's tune changes are interesting and it's how he made the songs his own. ...lol...the person who created this video should've just muted Adam's parts completely...so that there would be nothing to compare to the loud Freddie's parts ... and it seems from these excerpts Paul didn't even try to sing but rather conducted the audience... really.. hard to believe someone would employ the easiest tricks of changing the volume and finding no singing moments to this extend...pathetic... in the end everyone will stay with whatever they like/love...I LOVE Adam's voice, I love it more than anyone's in the world of the great opera singers - these are the only ones I can internally compare to with some knowledge... the 'rock' voices with the rasp so treasured by many is not for me...shouting with the veins bursting out of their necks is not for me... Adam's voice and delivery are PERFECT FOR ME. Freddie's voice and delivery are perfect for others. Paul's voice and delivery are perfect for his fans. Quite simple really. ...and I scroll thru Sauli posts too...all good...

Freddie was the greatest live singer in modern music history. The best recorded live version of WWTLF was in Budapest. In the late seventies I beleive. Adam is technically a far supeior singer to Freddie. In fact their is not one singer I can think of who technically touches Adam. Emotionally yes, techincally no. Adam is up their with Plant, Mercury, Tyler, Buckley, Tate, Dickinson e.t.c. I do think it is pointless comparing Adam and Freddie on WWTLF. Interesting discussion don't get me wrong. But it is all down to tastes, and specefic assements. I completely agree with you. And to get the dates right: Budapest was in 1986. WWTLF isn’t that old.😉 It’s just old enough that Freddie had the opportunity to sing it live in concerts. But not as often as Adam. So in the end Adam has had much more time to develop his singing of this particular song (although I think he did it perfectly from the beginning). Oh 86? Sorry I wasen't born till 88 LOL. I know Queen started around the 70's. I actually think though if their is one song Adam has Freddie beat it is WWTLF. Budapest was the best live recording. But Adam consistently delivers on that song. In a way I don't thin I have ever seen or heard any singer in history do. This is based on youtube recordings of other great singers hhaha.

So I just knew, that I was alive and listening to radios, when this song was played regularly and became one of my favorites till today. Could not have been from the seventies then😉. Besides, I read, that Freddie found WWTLF very hard to sing. In the recording Brian sings the first verse with his higher voice. He also wrote it. Freddie sings the rest of the song. In concerts it was sung completely by Freddie, but he wasn’t able to sing it in the same key as Brian. And he used to sing live in a lower key in general (on many songs). I think it’s often overlooked (or overheard), that the first verse in the recording is sung (beautifully) by Brian.

I don't think there is anything wrong with comparing, as long as it stays respectful...if it turns vile and petty, that's something else... Everyone has the right to exist...just realistically imagine only ONE person got all the fans^^...for everyone something...
Adam has inspired me so much, in so many different ways, which is why he will always hold a special place in my heart, for no logic, or objective reason...
