The thing about JCS is that Jesus is not "the" top role. Some may argue that Judas is the focal role. Or it could be that the two roles work off each other to create the tension for the story line. Both roles really have a "crisis of faith" in this version of the Easter story. Jesus' ended with his accepting what would happen, Judas with regretting his choice to the point of suicide. (Yes, I"ve been listening to the original soundtrack to add to my memories of the religion classes discussion at my R. Catholic high school.)

That was sort of what I was asking earlier. Would they let Adam just do his thing when someone else is in the top role? Then I thought about the tv version of Sound of Music. Carrie Underwood was the star, but overlooking her bad and bland acting, she did great with the vocals. But when Audra McDonald sang her part, there was no competing with her. Audra, who is a veteran Broadway and opera and multiple Tony award winning singer, was just too powerful. I cannot imagine casting Adam as Judas and then asking him to hold back in order to not overshadow another star. It would be like entering a champion lineage stallion in a race and then adding an extra 50 pounds to the saddle to make the race more competitive. If you don't want Judas to steal the show from Jesus, don't cast the greatest pop/rock/musical singer of his generation. In fact, if Adam does not get the role, I will always believe it was precisely because he would leave everyone else in the rearview mirror, as Paula once said. As to The Sound of Music with Carrie..... don't get me started. She did a passable job of a pop/country singer trying to do a classic musical theater show. Not cringe worthy, but not nearly the voice needed for the role. Just, no. Casting her may have been a win in terms of attracting an audience demographic who would not normally tune in to a traditional, iconic musical, but it was a total fail from an acting and musical theater singing perspective. Very disappointing. LOL!!! Thanks Cassie. I was trying to be kind. I thought if I were too harsh someone would accuse me of thinking Adam is the only one who can sing. Haha.

Yes, they do handicap some races by adding weight to the faster horses. From wiki A handicap race in horse racing is a race in which horses carry different weights, allocated by the handicapper. A better horse will carry a heavier weight, to give it a disadvantage when racing against slower horses. The skill in betting on a handicap race lies in predicting which horse can overcome its handicap.[1] Although most handicap races are run for older, less valuable horses, this is not true in all cases; some great races are handicaps, such as the Grand National steeplechase in England and the Melbourne Cup in Australia. In the United States over 30 handicap races are classified as Grade I, the top level of the North American grading system.

I think Tim Minchin got the part (Judas) because he was a big name draw ((is he known in the US?) he's not a 'specialist' singer He is more known as a comedian and musical entertainer (and writer of musicals e.g.. Matilda) rather than as a musical theatre singer. Mary was played by ex-Spice Girl, Mel C. Edit: Andrew Lloyd Webber has said he waited a long time to do this arena production and how thrilled he was with it - so I can really see this concept in April I'd never heard of Tim Minchin....but I'm not up on theater folks. I did recognize Mel C. From what little I've watched, the Jesus guy is really good. Is he the one who won a talent show? ETA: I see he was on X Factor.....Ben Forster. His X Factor audition just popped up on Youtube as a suggestionI see the staging in this arena tour is very simple.....tons of terraces of steps and a huge screen up top. Looks like the whole show is from the steps....lots and lots of steps. LOL Ben Forster won a TV competition called 'Superstar'....Lloyd Webber was head judge. .it was specifically to find someone for the role of Jesus in the upcoming arena tour. ......voted for each week by the public along same lines as Idol etc. (he can't have got very far on X Factor)

lurleene.....Is this the one you watched with Tim Minchin as Judas. Sorry.....I don't like him at all...altho I see he has some fans in the comments. I had seen this production, but didn't like this Judas and didn't watch the rest of the production. I'll go back and view it from a production point of view. Well it's a bit like having Johnny Depp as Judas.

Well there's this one from 2015. With this big of production I can see having powerful vocals would be helpful. I'm ok with the guy, I like the rock attitude and he's more playful with the others. Will they allow Adam to change it up a bit? I'd like to hear bits of this music soar and it's pushed a bit fast in my opinion.
I did like the other one where Jesus was on the light bar cross, I think it tells more of the story.

Re Judases past. There are longtime Broadway fan boards that have grown sub boards for most major and some not so major musicals. JCS is flexible enough in staging it has particularly fierce & opinionated groups, among the hottest three topics is always the casting and interpretation of Judas. During the 2012 Bway revival, Josh Young was a big audience favorite (tony nom as well) but among hardcore Theater and JCS fans, he was rather polarizing for a few reasons
(Linkinbert - good pt. I’d forgotten about adding the weight in handicapping. And I read so many Dick Francis books too!)
