Re Judases past. There are longtime Broadway fan boards that have grown sub boards for most major and some not so major musicals. JCS is flexible enough in staging it has particularly fierce & opinionated groups, among the hottest three topics is always the casting and interpretation of Judas. During the 2012 Bway revival, Josh Young was a big audience favorite (tony nom as well) but among hardcore Theater and JCS fans, he was rather polarizing for a few reasons (Linkinbert - good pt. I’d forgotten about adding the weight in handicapping. And I read so many Dick Francis books too!) Yes! another Dick Francis fan.

Yes, he's very good...... skaschep do you know this guy, Jan Dulles?.....but like you said Adam could blow the roof off! This dude's kinda rock style seemed more like how Adam might perform the song. I'll see if I can find the 2013 London version and see if I like the production. Yeah I know of him. After this he got pretty famous in the Netherlands in a group called the 3J's. They mostly sing in the Dutch language though and it's not really my cup of tea. But he's a great singer. This production was done in his home town where everybody either becomes a singer of an actuary (that's pretty serious). He played Jezus in 2014 in an annual event we have on the Thursday before Easter where also the last hours of Jezus are being re-lived. It's a 'live' event shown live on TV called 'The Passion' and happens every year in another city where hundreds of people also walk along the cross through the city. It features mostly celebrities and last year we had a black Jezus. So the US isn't very new at that . It features known songs from the Dutch music history. From 2014 most songs are in the Dutch language though. This year was in the city I did my studies so if you want to have a look here is a playlist. www.youtube.com/watch?v=As2vH2sfLwA&list=PL8n75o776Btp2LAjTDwcbjhuYzGU-JFRM&index=12The song after this is also very nice. An interaction between Judas and Jezus. It's called 'Omarm" which means to put your arms around me. ETA: I think they put the order of the songs the wrong way. The show started with the last song and ended with the first song of that playlist.

Thanks Simone.....That's all interesting. I was surprised that the whole cast sang with no Dutch accent...that I could detect. All very talented and their English was perfect. Carl Anderson aside, I really liked this guy as Judas.
Also, I have no idea how these things work....but since John Legend is also an executive producer does that mean that he invested in the production financially...isn't that what executive producers do ?...wonder if him being cast as Jesus was part of the deal or why he was interested in the project. Was he involved from the production standpoint at the early stages or brought in later on when cast as part of the deal. From Wikipedia.....For TV, "In television, an executive producer usually supervises the creative content and the financial aspects of a production." Just wondering about how him being cast at Jesus came about.

I didn't know that. I don't know why but my enthusiasm just dropped a little. A cast member being somewhat is charge of other performers and not just himself pretty much ensures they would keep the limelight wouldn't it? I don't know how this stuff works tho.

No, the director and producer would be in charge of that. I have heard that Andrew Lloyd Weber is very particular about his musicals. I think he might be the one with the most control. An Ex Producer is more in charge of things like budget and making sure the project all comes together and finished on time. He might have had some input into casting though, possibly?

Sounds like Legend had a say in the castinting? Maybe they are not all his quotes tho. What do you think? "I'm thrilled to join the cast of this production of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert," Legend said when he was cast.
"It's such a powerful, meaningful musical and I'm humbled to be part of this performance. "We've already formed an incredible team, and, as we finish casting, I'm certain we will put together some of the greatest talents around to do this work justice."www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/news/a846909/jesus-christ-superstar-live-sara-bareilles-nbc/

That was when I started wondering just how this whole process works....him being involved as an ex producer AND in the Jesus role. And what input or influence he might have in casting of the other roles. Under these circumstances....I kinda doubt anybody else was considered for the Jesus role.

Well there's this one from 2015. With this big of production I can see having powerful vocals would be helpful. I'm ok with the guy, I like the rock attitude and he's more playful with the others. Will they allow Adam to change it up a bit? I'd like to hear bits of this music soar and it's pushed a bit fast in my opinion. I did like the other one where Jesus was on the light bar cross, I think it tells more of the story. You're right....this one is too rushed. The Judas is good enough, but he kinda gets swallowed up with the chorus....doesn't really stand out...other than his buff body...lol. It's full out throttle all the way thru with not much nuance IMO. There are so many ways this production could go. From more of a throwback to the original to a really modern take. Could be more of a group/chorus/dancer push to more of an individual cast member emphasis. So many options and variables. Of course WE fans would want Adam to shine above all else. I just wish we new IF HE IS GONNA BE JUDAS OR NOT. Surely more cast announcements will come soon....or maybe not....but maybe if not we can hope for a leak from somebody/anybody associated with the production. I wonder when actual rehearsals for some or many will start. Surely Adam will do some kind of prep work prior to leaving for NZ/AU. Or maybe he'll just learn/practice the songs on his own before that full out last week in March. Who knows. I just want to know if he's in or not. I'm spending too much time thinking about it all. LOL

I think that John Legend is an excellent choice to play Jesus for many reasons. The music written for Jesus is more quiet, thoughtful, and soulful which is right up Legend's musical alley, especially the main song Gethsemane. It is also more of an acting part as Jesus is often shown visually responding to songs that are circling around him. Finally there is the undercurrent that Jesus's mission/fate is tied to those who are scorned and put down. Consider this quote from 'Heaven on their Minds' and how it might translate today: For these reasons and more, Legend should be great and meaningful. I am very impressed with the casting so far. Of course, if they don't cast Adam then I might change my mind.

Of course, if they don't cast Adam then I might change my mind. I agree about Legend fitting the quiet, thoughtful, soulful Jesus. I don't think he was miscast...at least not from the little I know about him. Just looking into his face....even w/o the singing....he has a very kind expression, etc., especially for TV I was just wondering how all the business behind the scenes parts of a production work. Like did he want the Jesus role before he got involved being an ex producer or was it a logical or calculated choice once he was involved. etc. Maybe the role and ex producer part were negotiated by ALW, etc. I'm just being nosey as to the nuts and bolts...lol. You know Adam said to RuPaul he'd love to play Judas....and we've all know that forever....but he thought it should be in a new movie presentation on the big screen. I gathered he thought that would be the best possible way to re-do JCS, rather than another theatrical production. Of course he was thinking big and best possible presentation, etc. in his opinion. And he added he'd like to play up the Judas has a romantic interest in Jesus angle. Then this opportunity comes along....well hopefully it comes along..lol... and he probably thought ....Yes, I'll take it! A bird in the hand kinda thing. He could fit this in now where a big movie production would require a huge commitment in time, acting, etc., and that's not a reality at this moment. TV exposure with new music coming out and more QAL, etc. is a smart move. Just my speculating and projecting his thoughts and feelings...... LOL
