I never watched AI, only parts of Adam's season, but my main objection to ANY of the singing shows is that the right person never wins, at least in the later seasons....never. They always pick the blandest of the bland (KA, Ruben) and it's never about the person with the most talent. I did try to watch one of the earliest Voice seasons and same thing, boring bland Javier Colon won.
Ridiculous.
I also hate the sob stories, all the backstory dramas.
But thank you, American Idol, for giving us Adam ! I will be forever grateful.

I guess they figure the audience will really buy into someone with a real doozy of a back-story and keep them in the competition. I find the back-stories really annoying generally. Adam didn't have a dramatic back-story. He came from a nice family, etc. etc. He performed music since childhood and kept at it. No weepy family catastrophes. No busking in the subway to make ends meet. Other than him being gay, he was just a guy with an amazing voice and an engaging personality who wasn't afraid to break the mold in every way he could. That's a star, in my book. And even if AI is no longer for me, I too am eternally grateful that the show gave us Adam. Changed my life in a lot of ways. All good.

Well, one good thing is, hopefully this will give people something to enjoy and cheer on....a distraction from the disaster that is our current political climate. We definitely need a distraction right now.

I agree with you both on the backstories. Makes me think of this interview with Sharon Osbourne: I remember Neil saying right after Idol (or maybe right before the final vote) that Adam had deliberately stayed away from doing anything that might trade on sympathy, being the lone gay contestant who was experiencing public and private (in-show) bigotry. Danny Gokey had a tragic backstory, and he really played it up hard. These shows poke and pester to find these tragic backstories, and then some contestants ride that for as long as they can. It's grotesque, I think. But I still have a great fondness for Idol, for the people I remember from it before Adam and of course for Adam. But I've only watched the classic judging panel, and I've never been able to get into the later versions. (That video is so cute! haha Silly boy.)
