If Freddie were alive, I bet Queen would have already played the SB. I just think they aren't interested in Queen with a "fill-in." For many people Freddie Mercury is, was, and will always be Queen. Anyway, I like Maroon 5 a lot and think they will be great. I am probably in the minority here, but I think Adam Levine is a good singer (and I really love some of the older acoustic stuff he has done) Honestly, all I care about right now is Adam as a solo artist. Waiting patiently for label news and the new album. I strongly doubt Queen would have played the SuperBowl if Freddie had been alive when they did the series of classic rock halftime shows.
Queen was most popular in the US in the late 70's but the SB shows were not a place for rock music:
Date: Jan 18, 1976 Theme: 200 Years and Just a Baby: A Tribute to America's Bicentennial Performer: Up with People
Date: Jan 9, 1977 Location: Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California) Theme: It's a Small World Performers: Los Angeles Unified All-City Band & Audience card stunt Producer: The Walt Disney Company
Date: Jan 15, 1978 Location: Louisiana Superdome (New Orleans, Louisiana) Theme: From Paris to Paris of America Performers: Tyler Apache Belles Drill Team, and Apache Band Pete Fountain & Al Hirt
Date: Jan 21, 1979 Location: Miami Orange Bowl (Miami, Florida) Theme: Salute to Caribbean Performers: Ken Hamilton, various Caribbean bands including Grammacks out of Dominica
They continued to have these Up With People and Disney shows through the 1980's and 1990's. For example:
Date: Jan 25, 1987 Location: Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California) Theme: Salute to Hollywood's 100th Anniversary - The World of Make Believe Performers: George Burns, Mickey Rooney, Grambling State University and USC Marching Bands, Disney characters, Southern California-area high school drill teams and dancers Producer: The Walt Disney Company Setlist: "Ghost Riders in the Sky" Theme songs from Bonanza, Indiana Jones, and Footloose Hoedown song "Cheek to Cheek" "What a Feeling" (Theme from Flashdance) "That's Entertainment" "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" "When You Wish Upon a Star"
They mixed in some 50's artists along the way.
The first contemporary pop artist to headline the SB was Michael Jackson.
Date: Jan 31, 1993 Location: Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California) Performer: Michael Jackson Producer: Radio City, Scott Sanders and Don Mischer Productions References:[16][17] Setlist: "Jam" (M. Jackson) "Billie Jean" (M. Jackson) "Black or White" (M. Jackson) "We Are the World" (children's choir) "Heal the World" (M. Jackson)
The 1993 halftime performance increased the TV ratings by a significant amount. IAfter 1993, the NFL made a deliberate effort to attract top performers for the halftime shows.
But ever with that, the first classic era rock act at the SuperBowl was Aerosmith in 2001.
Date: Jan 28, 2001 Location: Raymond James Stadium (Tampa, Florida) Theme: The Kings of Rock and Pop Performers: Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly Producer: MTV Sponsor: E-Trade
Setlist: Pre-recorded intro sketch with Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith, and 'N Sync "Bye Bye Bye" ('N Sync) "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (Aerosmith) "It's Gonna Be Me ('N Sync) "Jaded" (Aerosmith) "Walk This Way" (Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly)
So the question is, would Queen -- a band that stop touring in the US in 1981 long before Freddie got ill -- have been picked to do a haltime show in the 2000s. Would they really have replaced U2, Prince, The Rolling Stone or The Who? I can't see that as a realistic alternative history.
I think it is more likely that if Freddie had not gotten ill, Queen would have broken up in the late 1980's as Freddie moved on to do his own projects. Instead we got The Works - a project heavily championed by Brian and Roger to try to reclaim their rock fans -- it pretty much failed.
Note: SB Halftime info from Wikipedia.

Yeah I find it hard to beleive the NFL and the Superbowl would of been interested in Freddie and Queen in the 70s. The were always more bigger in the UK. Than in the States. Prob comparitively better chance with Adam. Being in Top 40, being an mainstream artist. And being contemporary. But it is very unlikely. I can see maybe a multi act show with QAL. With Bruno Mars or something. But I could only see that occuring. IF Adam get a few mega hits with his next Album.
As for Radio and Adam. Well Radio PD's have their advertisers. They also have designed playlist they stick too. Most succesfull Radio Acts, have blueprints mostly. I think Adams best place is HAC. But he kinda does not fit in any Radio Format. He's kinda homeless on Radio. I Thought Ghost Town was an eye opener. IT managed to find a loophole on US Pop Radio. .Correct me if I am wrong first Deep House Hit on US Radio? Anyway. Just looking for more vocally driven, rock leaning stuff in A4 Looks like he is inspired by his time with Queen. So be good to see some Glam too.

I agree that the bombastic Queen catalogue is more than SB worthy and that Adam definitely has the skills and stage presence to perform at that level. However, Queen being British doesn't help, plus they were not nearly as popular in the US as they were in Europe, which may explain why some folks still haven't gotten the memo that Queen is back with a stunning new front man. I think chances for the gig would increase if Adam himself already performed at those mega platforms as a solo artist, in order to pull a British band in. Unfortunately, I can't see it happening now, but may be some day... I agree and almost wrote the same thing.
Plus, Queen is a classic rock band -- not a current act. Pepsi (who pays for the halftime show) wants an artist who appeals to a broad range of people 15 to 49. That is not a classic rock audience.
I mentioned that I went to a Queen + Adam Lambert concert to two friend today (in their late 20's) -- they did not know who Queen is or was. Wayne's World which revived them a bit in the US was released in 1992 -- when they were 2 and 4 years old. And that was the only really major Queen thing in the US since 1981.
Thanks for the reality check. What gets me really excited at the moment is the prospect that Adam's new, more current music will likely be influenced by the experiences and knowledge gained through his collaboration with Queen. Win/win.

I have found some interesting numbers about Queen. These numbers are fairly new and are said to include sales, digital sales and streams. I can’t say, if that’s entirely correct. But these numbers show, how successful Queen in some parts of the world really is/was. It might help to put the Super Bowl discussion into perspective. Because Queen has been more successful in many many other countries. It was posted in ukmix.org by Slightlymad!

Good question. I don't know. But my heart hurts to even think about it. There are still too many out there who would think that is a disqualifier I'm afraid. If there was a pop artist who was big enough and gay, I don't think it would be an disqualifier. But who is big enough and gay? I think they are really having a hard time finding any artists with SB level appeal.
The best ever halftime show (based on most lists) was by a Gay, not out/but not hiding artist, Prince.
I don't recall anyone being upset when Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars did their Rainbow LOVE halftime show -- SB50 (2016). [OK Rudy Giuliani was upset and Fox News hated it.]
And they had Lady Gaga in 2017. She is not gay but certainly is a gay advocate -- and worked in a pro-gay message.
From what I have read, the issue is they did not want to book an artist who would make a political statement about racial justice. That eliminated many black artists.
Wow....we are truly going to hell...

I don't think being a gay advocate or even a bi female would be the same as being a gay male headlining the SB. They don't face the same type of stigma and push back. But have no idea if a major gay male artist could get a slot. It hasn't been done yet so until it happens it has not happened. Maybe one day they will start with a guest spot on another's headlining gig. They may not be interested in Queen with Adam but my guess is they would be less interested in a 70+ Freddie fronting the band today. I agree with you that it is different. But there is also not a mainstream gay artist to select right now. I think the most likely out gay man to headline the SB would have been Elton John -- 15 or 20 years ago.
Hopefully, in a few years, no one will have to care anymore. (Yes, I am dreaming and hopeful.)

Wow....we are truly going to hell... Thankfully, Nike (and a number of other major US corporations) have gotten this one right. I can't imagine that Pepsi or the NFL Players Association will not push for a representative halftime show. If it ends up being Adam Levine/Maroon 5, I expect that he will be joined by some other artists. He has so many collaborations -- enough to fill the field.
