What’s the biggest surprise on this album?
8.23.20 by Q3
I am not sure what your pick is, but here’s mine:
“Love Kills” (The Ballad) (Mercury/Moroder) iHeart Radio Theater, Los Angeles, USA, 2014
It was an amazing performance but it was not a big concert performance, it was a small showcase, pre-tour promo. So that makes the song’s performance a bit odd but that is not why it is a surprise to me that this song was selected.
“Love Kills” is only sort-of a Queen song. It was written by Freddie Mercury and first song recorded and released as a solo artist. It was used in Giorgio Moroder's 1984 restoration and edit of the 1927 silent film Metropolis. In 1985, the film was nominated at the 5th Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Musical Score, and the song itself was nominated for Worst Original Song. I recall that at the time that Queen fans mostly hated this disco song.
The song was never performed live in any Queen concert or event. And so, the performance of “Love Kills” in 2014 by Q+AL was notable. In 2014, Brian May and Roger Taylor reworked a previously unreleased ballad version of the song for inclusion on the compilation Queen Forever, which was released on November 10, 2014.
