Adam out and about in LA!!

Last night Adam was at the Chrome Hearts Dinner in Honor of Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters

Adam attended the Chrome Hearts dinner in honor of Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters. He joined Fergie, Kate Hudson, and Jake on stage and sang.

The dinner was held at the Chrome Hearts Factory, Los Angeles, CA United States on March 27. 2011. Chrome Hearts is a designer brand, founded in 1988 by motorcycle enthusiast Richard Stark, that specializes in high-end silver jewelry, leather clothing and furniture with gothic rock motifs. After the Chrome Hearts event Adam headed off to Lady Gaga's 25th birthday partyat La Citi, a bar/dance club in downtown LA. A couple photos from Gaga's party showed up overnight but more photos from the Gaga event are expected.

Adam has been the first at a lot of things. Here are a few that I am sure you know, a few you might have forgotten and maybe a surprise or two. (Well, my bet is I cannot surprise anyone here!)

1. First mainstream openly gay American pop star to have a Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit.

2. A few of many American Idol alum firsts: First American Idol alum to do a world tour. First American Idol alum to have a #1 Song in Japan (FYE #1 Japan Hot 100). First American Idol alum to release a major label live concert DVD. First American Idol alum to release a major label live concert CD. First American Idol alum to get a Grammy nomination as Best Male Pop Vocalist. (Note that is Male Pop – not R&B or Rock or Female.) First American Idol alum to have a song featured on a movie with production costs over $200 million (“2012” #11 on most expensive movie production cost list). Next milestone: first Idol alumus to have 1 million Twitter followers.

3. First Idol contestant to perform any Led Zeppelin (“Whole Lotta Love”), Steppenwolf (“Born to Be Wild”) or Foghat (“Slow Ride” with Alison) song on Idol, along with first to perform “Black or White”, “Ring of Fire”, “Tracks of My Tears”, “Mad World”, “If I Can't Have You”, “One”, and “Cryin’” on the show.

4. Note much of a first but I have to include it. First musician publically “banned” by ABC since Pete Seeger was banned from ABC’s “Hootenanny” in April 1963. Oddly, their sister networks, Disney TV, featured IIHY on their video playlist for over 2 months, Adam is featured at Disney’s American Idol Experience in both Orlando and Hollywood, and I have even heard Adam’s music in the background on ESPN. And, of course, Adam wasn’t actually banned from ABC, he was back on ABC on The View in December 10, 2009 – and they broadcast a clip of the notorious AMA performance. But, Adam has not done a live performance on any Disney/ABC-owned show since November 22, 2010.

Note: In 2010, ABC banned a Lane Bryant bra commercial from DWTS in 2010 because the commercial was deemed too “racy”. starcasm.net/archives/44331 In 2004, CBS withdrew their invitation to Janet Jackson to make an introduction on The Grammys after the SuperBowl incident generated over 540,000 FCC complaints. She was not on any Viacom-owned TV network, Cable channel or radio station for 4 years, including MTV Networks. (None of the these bannings makes sense to me.)

5. Initiated the “Lambert Clause”: In the wake of his controversial AMA performance, Disney/ABC and other major media companies added a new clause to performer’s contracts securing promises from musicians that their live performances won't veer away from what's been done in rehearsals.

6. Was one of two celebrities (along with Justin Bieber) that inspired Twitter to make their first public modification to their trending rules.

7. First in my heart – well OK third after my husband and son!

There are many more firsts but the big question is what will be Adam’s next first? Setting aside reaching 1 million Twitter followers, what do you think Adam’s next first will be?

In a move that is inspiring and also unfortunately infrequent, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has announced that it will partner with the Rainbow Refugee Committee to proactively work towards sponsoring persecuted gay immigrants to come to Canada and live in safety.

The department will provide $100,000 in assistance to cover three months of income support for the refugees upon their arrival here, while the Rainbow committee will offer orientation services, accommodation, food and other basic needs.

“These funds are a welcome first step in response to the crisis facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people around the globe, at a time when 77 countries continue to criminalize homosexuality and five prescribe the death penalty,” said Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, the country’s largest LGBT human rights organization.

Although there have been a few widely-reported cases of Western governments like the US or UK agreeing to accept individual immigrants who had proof of horrific treatment in their home countries, but it’s rare for a country to make a plan and set aside funds with that purpose in mind. The Star notes that Immigration Minister Kenney’s decision in this area stands in contrast to his decision to noticeably omit gays from the country’s travel brochure earlier this year, and also that it’s one he makes on the eve of an election. How refreshing to see a public official working for the gays rather than disavowing them as elections loom! Four for you, Mr. Kenney. Four for you.

PS: Saskatoon police officers are also taking the initiative to be trained on homophobic violence and hate crimes. Canada wins this week!
