I agree that ABC & Adam always intended for that performance to be provocative, shocking even.
My sense was that Adam got frustrated about the sound right at the beginning. Then he fell and that got the adrenaline pumping.
I think he planned to be fierce and dominating but not with the edge of real anger.
I think the song character was supposed to be dangerous,
but more in a campy way, not one that would frighten or alienate the audience.
