I was hoping for Trespassing. Cuckoo doesn't stand out. At least I get to keep my testicle ;D You can keep 2 And trust me -- IF it is Trespassing, I will be pleasantly surprised and work my tail off to get that song on every radio station, everywhere is the world. But knowing RCA I set aside my hopes and dreams. I do not think radio is a "bully", but I know that the label is the "boss". Why thank you ;D I do like the hook, chorus, bridge...or whatever they're called. Is the hook the one that gets repeated several times during the song? Is bridge the big payoff at the end of the song? Ugh so confusing ;D

The problem with these calculations, as I see it, is that Adam does not 'fit' US pop and these sorts of choices have not worked so far, with this album. Perhaps it is time to go with what people like rather than what we 'think' is radio friendly. Radio is not 'friendly'. It is a bully. You can only win with bullies when you challenge them, or decorate their a## with gold. Where would 'Rolling in the Deep' have fit re pop radio...? I have thought this since the choice was made for NCOE (Totally against it) that radio friendly needed to be thrown out the window and just release Adam's "sound." Even if NCOE made it, it sounds nothhing like the rest of the album. Sorry, but there is no funk in NCOE. I agree, with you dancygeorgia, that Shady totally reminds me of Rollin in the Deep! Quite a few unusual songs made it on Pop this year. And if RCA had gone with something more original, I don't think we'd be worried about radio right now. Couldn't agree with you more. The reason I was not very happy with NCOE as a single is that it doesn't give the funky, edgy flavor of the album. Fortunately, Trespassing does in a big way, and so does Cuckoo to a lesser extent. Shady is the coolest, mot funky song of all IMO.

The song includes the terms straight jacket and electric shock both outdated treatments for mental illness, and also says "I am a danger to myself" which could also be taken as a sign of mental instability. I am not trying to make a big deal of this and I still like the song for the most part, but this aspect makes me feel just a little uncomfortable at times. These expressions are metaphors -- and expressions like "straight jacket" are part of American culture -- very commonly used in horror films and magic acts and.... But you inspired a thought -- Cuckoo is a perfect Halloween song. I am doubling down on Cuckoo as the next single. PLL, Adam + Halloween = CUCKOO I know these words are being used in the metaphorical sense, straight jacket is especially obvious in the regard, nonetheless it bothers me a little bit. I am not bothered a lot, but I am a little. I do have some mental issues going on in my family, so maybe I am over sensitive because of this.

But, of course, it is a double-entendre of straight/gay. Ok, carry on, as you were. ETA: I stand corrected. It can be either one, but straight is the variant. Ok, now I'm done.

I tend to the "way to analytically side" but, anyway I look at it, Cuckoo is far more than a meaningless party song. If we heavily analyze lyrics, everything is objectionable -- look at Firework: Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?Do you ever feel already buried deep? Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing Do you know that there's still a chance for you 'Cause there's a spark in you?
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July
'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, oh As you shoot across the sky
Pop lyrics are supposed to be catchy, memorable and filled with double, triple meanings so they can be replayed endlessly, ETA: Spelling double meanings are totally lost on me. Strait verses Straight. Who knew? Straitjacket vs. straight jacket. Well I certainly learned something tonight. Setting that aside -- if you have viewed Cuckoo as a harmless pop track (which it is disguised as), check out the lyrics.... Feels like I’m having a meltdown It feels like I’m losing control They tell me I’m a danger to myself Now the crazy train is ready to roll, Oh!
Walk that walk like you don’t give a fuck You’ve got a right to turn it up and get down Electric shock no I can’t get enough Cause tonight we’re taking over the town, hey I wanna lose my mind like a maniac And cross the line Never looking back We’re on the loose Getting crazy and we’ve gone cuckoo Gonna party til they take us away
I’m swinging off of my hinges I’m cocked and I’m ready to go Just go on and pack up your things and The crazy train is ready to roll, oh
Gotta get out of this straight jacket, whoa Gotta get out of this straight jacket, whoa yeah
Cross the line We’re on the loose Getting crazy and we’ve gone cuckoo Gonna party til they take us away Party til they take us away Gonna party til they take us away

I rather like both these songs when I read them written out like poetry. I like them well enough in their real life form too.

It can be either one, but straight is the variant. Ok, now I'm done. Thanks, I never knew that! Funny, I probably have read that word many times in my life, and I never noticed that. Ok, I feel like I'm getting in over my head, but I do want to point out that I'm extremely sensitive to people with mental illness and the stigmatization and belittling of people whose life can be sheer hell is something that really sets me off. However, this song doesn't push any of those buttons for me. I also felt he was making a pretty obvious allusion to having to sometimes cover his "gayness" (ok, I know I'm getting myself in trouble here) by putting on more heterosexual persona when he just wants to let his rainbow/"freak" flag fly. (See, e.g., his Idol audition versus the flaming headdress vid--it's presenting oneself in a way depending on the audience and how comfortable one feels--and that whole crap with Randy offering his hand to be kissed and then AL turning it over to do a "bro shake," please, lol, major subtext. Would they have done that with anyone else? That's the sh*t he has to deal with all the time). Anyway, it's something I think we all can identify with, and many of us champion this ability to feel liberated, whatever our personal "strait/straight jacket" might be. And we all have sensitivities, so I totally get anyone that would have a issue with Cuckoo and I don't question it. Just like I don't like certain slang words of female anatomy being bandied about so freely on the Internet. I'm just like, ugh, oh well. Let me go with that old Internet acronym: YMMV. ETA: Damn! Fixing up major typos.
