I scored 88 in the quiz :( I did miss the shoe size, actually had never seen that interview. Thanks, kamar, for the video! Also guessing is very difficult as we have different size system here. I had an idea that his foot is not huge, only big, and my answer 9 1/2 would be equivalent of his real size in our system. I should get some points for that, I think.  Another miss of mine was the instrument. I did watch that interview not so long ago and remembered that he said piano. I stuck to my mind because I have played piano and because his brother played it. I would have thought that he fancied some other instrument to not 'compete' with his brother. So the answer was a bit odd to me and I was sure it was the right answer. The mention of guitar totally escaped me. Here too, I don't think my answer was exactly wrong. All in all, the quiz was fun! :Clap: Hmm, Sauli in Copenhagen... Does it mean that we won't get any beautiful boyfriend pictures from the fashion week? That's very sad :( Adam better have a photoshoot in NY and let us see some pictures of it right away. |

Q3, I find these Core Entertainment lists interesting. But the one that I am most curious about is the "merchandise." Why are Kelly, Carrie, Fantasia, Daughtry, and Jordin not on the merchandise list? Is it because their seasons are older? Do you think merchandising rights might be a 5 year deal? coremediagroup.com/19.html I do not know what the current contract term is but for Season 8 -- Adam's year -- they had to file Allison Iraheta's contract in California so it is a public record. The contact term for Season 8 merchandising is 5 years. That means Adam is stuck with CORE/19 Merchandising until May 2014. UNLESS he renegotiates it or they fail to perform or some other legal way out. The contract terms have changed over time. Mostly, the contestants make less money than they used to and the recording contract advances have been lowered a lot. The UMG contract with 19 was done in the wake of Kris Allen's disappointing sales year and thus the advances were dropped a lot. Q3 - few more questions please 1. how long is their contract with 19R/Core now? I thought they have 10years, but I saw Kelly Clarkson is still in contract with them. 2. Is it possible an alumn not in contract with 19R anymore but has signed to a label? You know who I'm talking about, Kris name's not in the 19R list but looks like he is with RCA. Or maybe he renewed his contract with RCA withouth 19R now. I'm just confused since Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, Fantasia are still with them, especially Kelly. I thought she should be free from 19R by now. :-/ |

It is easy to figure out the Idol/19 model ----
Pay the talent little or nothing.
Make the talent sign a contract that gives us a share of everything for a long time BEFORE they have a chance to use our promotional platform.
If they do not make it, cut them loose.
If they make it, we get a cut of everything.
<Up to here it is pretty much the same as any record deal.>
Then for the icing on the cake -- make it a TV show and we sell ads. And those ads make everyone associated with Idol rich beyond imagination. And by everyone, I mean Simon Fuller, Simon Cowell, FOX TV, the TV affiliates, Ryan.
Simon Fuller had the TV show concept, Simon Cowell added in the record deal part and together they built a new get richer scheme.
A goose that laid golden eggs. But if there are 5 or 8 or 12 geese trying to lay golden eggs, the value of those golden eggs drops a lot. Who won The Voice last year? Who won AGT last year? Who won the first year of X-Factor? Most people have no idea and music buyers do not seem to care.
Sure the radio charts are filled with talent show contestants but that is because there are so many talent show contestants.

Don't get me wrong. I thank Idol for giving Adam a real shot. I am not sure he would have found another path to such success. But Adam is not a typical reality TV star.
But beyond that, I think the market is getting saturated with Reality TV singers.
ETA: I have very limited knowledge of Idol contracts outside of Adam's season. But the contracts were very, very pro-19 in 2002, became less one-sided after Clay won his freedom from 19M in a legal dispute, and in AI10 - AI11 -- have very low advances because of low recorded music sales.

I Agree Q3. Idol was so big at one point and everybody wanted a piece of that pie. So that's why they created all these other reality TV shows and now Idol's pie is not as big as used to be and we the viewer are having too much pie and getting full.. and didn't even want to eat it again... at list I'm.. don't watch any of them... didn't even watch SYTYCD this year...

I thought she should be free from 19R by now. :-/ Kelly just celebrated the 10 year anniversary of her Idol win a few days ago. I am pretty sure that for Kelly her contract was for 5 studio albums, which came to 10 years. She recently did an interview that was VERY complimentary of RCA. So I would not be surprised if she stays with them, especially after the succss of her most recent album. If Carrie and Daughtry have the same deal, then they are both on album #3 now. |

I agree. I would be very surprised if Kelly left RCA. They have had two wholesale management changes since the Clive Davis was there and Clive is the one who Kelly had major issues with. Now RCA is very artist-centric and seems like a good place for Kelly. With the success of Stronger, she is in a great bargaining position for her new contact. Also, I believe that she is done with 19R now and can sign a direct contact with a label.
