I suspect it is a bit of both. Probably something in their physiology that creates a somewhat similar tone in their voices, tho Adam's is much more finely developed thru training than Freddie's. Makes me wonder what Freddie would have sounded like if he had started voice lessons at 10 years old. But Adam has said he liked what Freddie did with his voice, and how he shaped it. Certainly Adam studied Freddie. So he probably picked up some of his styling. Then, on Bo Rap, I think Adam may also consciously be trying to match Freddie's tones in order to create that effect. It feels almost like Freddie is passing the torch to Adam. [/quote]

There was an interview, sometime around the time of Idol or maybe even on Idol, where Adam actually said that he really studied Bo Rap to figure out how Freddie made the vocal sounds and how he could duplicate it. I think he said he did this for other rock artists also, or at least implied it. Anybody remember which interview this was?

Adam could or could not have been paid for his appearance. We don't really know. We do know that the female judge from The Voice was paid about 300,000 mb or 47,000 US dollars for an appearance.

$47,000 is a nice chunk of change for an appearance or a song performance! It's also A LONG WAY off from one million dollars! ;D

Also, if Jackie Chan

pulls in about 160K, I doubt Adam would come close to even that much.

I remember hearing/reading that Jay Leno paid each of the Tonight Show guests $10,000 per appearance plus travel expenses whether the guest was a big star or an non-star. That was a few years (5-8 or so) so I expect the fee is a bit higher now. For a solo music artist, this would at least allow the artist to pay all of the band and techies and maybe have a bit left for the artist.

While one could claim that an appearance on Idol is worth it for the good publicity alone, one could also claim that the appearance of a big enough star helps bring in viewers for the show. The viewer numbers for the Idol results show is a good bit less than for the 1st night, so Idol does need to have something to draw more people to the results show. So I cannot imagine that Idol does not pay it's performing artists a fee for appearing on the show. Idol even pays the contestant's about $1,000 each per number they perform in on the results show - this is mandated by union labor regulations. So I think they would pay at least as much as Leno for former contestants and probably much more for big stars.

As someone said, China is likely to pay even more for the appearance of a star artist. And they seem to consider Adam to be a big star! I remember reading somewhere that a Chinese radio station paid Shakira some huge figure ($300,000-$500,000 comes to mind) to visit and sing 3 songs live over air in the studio. So considering that they paid the Chinese judge $47,000 for an appearance and that Adam had to spend several days of his time traveling, I think it reasonable to expect that they paid Adam somewhere in the $50,000-$100,000 range. The last minute announcement of Adam's appearance on the show may have been too late to greatly affect the number of people in the stadium, but it certainly could have been a big draw for TV and internet viewers. But we will likely never know for sure.
