Tonight: The Grammy Awards nominations will be announced

The Recording Academy will announce several nominations in several GRAMMY categories for the 2013 Grammy Awards in a prime-time TV special. The concert/press conference will be staged in Nashville's Bridgestone Arena and air live on CBS on Dec. 5 at 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST.

GRAMMY nominations concert will feature performances by the Band Perry, Luke Bryan, Maroon 5, Ne-Yo, and more.

Backstage At The Nominations Concert, a post-nominations concert live stream featuring interviews and conversation from Nashville; and much more. Additionally, GRAMMY.com will be the first to provide the official 55th GRAMMY nominations list, which will reveal all of the nominees in all 81 GRAMMY categories.

Adam has 4 Grammy submissions -- plus 1 for the songwriters:

Album of the Year - awarded to the performer and the production team of a full album.

Song of the Year: Better Than I Knew Myself - awarded to the writer(s)/composer(s) of a single song.

Record of the Year: Better Than I Knew Myself - awarded to the performer and the production team of a single song.

Pop Field Submissions

Best Pop Vocal Album - awarded to the performer and the production team of a full album.

Pop Solo: Better Than I Knew Myself - awarded to a solo performance (vocal or instrumental) pop recording and is limited to singles or tracks only.

Adam has the best shot at a nomination in the two pop performance/vocal categories.

1. Pop Solo: Better Than I Knew Myself

This is the second year for this category which combines the previous categories for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

>> This is a hugely competitive category.

In the first year for this award (2012) the nominees were:

Adele — "Someone Like You" (winner)
Lady Gaga — "Yoü and I"
Bruno Mars — "Grenade"
Katy Perry — "Firework"
Pink — "Perfect"

All 5 nominees were Top 10 hits in the US, 3 were #1, "Perfect" #2, "You and I" #6, and all but "Perfect" are certified Platinum.

With only one year of history, it is hard to make any guesses how this category will evolve but it appears to be a "pop hits" orientated category.

2. Best Pop Vocal Album

This seems to be Adam's best bet but it is very, very competitive.

On the plus side:

Trespassing is a #1 album.

Trespassing is a ambitious album.

Adam has been nominated for a Grammy before.

An album that did not get mainstream market support (big sales) could get enough votes to garner a nomination because there are hundreds of submissions that fragment the vote. A relatively low percentage of votes (4%-8%) could put Trespassing into the Top 5, that is, a nominee.

But, history indicates that sales/mainstream popularity matter in this category.

The GRAMMYS are intended to "honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position." BUT in the Pop categories, it appears that sales do matter to GRAMMY voters.

Since this award was established in 1995, only one artist won this category with an album that had not sold over 500,000 units -- that was Joni Mitchell's "Turbulent Indigo" in 1996.

The last album nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album that had not sold over 500,000 units in the US was James Taylor "Covers" which was nominated in 2009.

Note: The Beatles won a similar category in 1968 - Best Contemporary Album. It was only awarded one time.

This is a hugely competitive category -- hundreds of submissions, many from artists with excellent albums and many from artists with a history of getting many, many Grammy nominations. No matter what happens, Trespassing is one of the best albums of 2012.
